You can get these from Cult Pens for $50 USD, with free shipping. You can get them from Jetpens for $56 USD, with free shipping. (Both will get them to you must faster) So the drop price is not all that appealing right now. FWIW.

ironhelixxYou're basically getting a free notebook. I think it's a pretty decent deal especially as a gift. I just hope it comes in time for fathers day :D Cult Pens btw is free UK shipping and the price is in pounds, it does not come out to 50 USD

dieyenThat is incorrect on the Cult Pens price, Dieyen. We, in the USA, don't pay the euro VAT when ordering from Europe/UK, so it is £39.58 excluding VAT for us - which was ~$50 USD when I originally posted, and about $51.50 USD today. And you get free shipping for orders over 💯 and flat rate shipping of £10 under 💯. And for the "free" notebook - it is only of any value if it is usable to you. In my case it's not of any use. But for those who will use it, it does add value.

As an experienced LAMY Lx user, just wanted to mention that the nib on this pen is much more of a nail than the nibs found on the AL-star and safari. While it's a beautiful art-deco design (my opinion), it is much stiffer than the stainless steel nibs without the Lx finish. I have two of these pens, and while I do enjoy writing with them, the writing experience with the Lx nibs is different enough to notice. I only say this if you are assuming it'll write exactly like your safari or AL-star. In my experience it doesn't.

For anyone who hasn't used these Filofax refillable notebooks in the past: the notebooks themselves are pretty nice. The paper is expensive, for what it is, and isn't really appropriate for fountain pen use. You'll want an EF nib, and a feather/bleed resistant ink if you go for it. Paper's heavy, so the bleed isn't terrible but the feathering is bad. Like, marker on printer paper bad.
While I'm being that guy, anyway... for folks in the US: Amazon has these pens for $2 more than the lowest price on this drop.

Thanks for pointing that out. Sometimes I forget to pay attention to things I know I won't use.
Regarding the Lamy converters... they hold considerably less ink than the cartridges. Opinions on the matter differ, but I find it far more convenient to refill the cartridges with a syringe than to use the converter. Can't figure out how to get the converter totally filled (always have a tiny air bubble), and can't get the piston converters filled without inking my fingers!
One other bit I should call out for any Safari-like pen: if you've any interest in a stub nib, Lamy's are very easy writing. Well worth the few bucks for a 1.1mm, and they work well for everyday writing. Can't recommend them enough.

DermottI seldom use cartridges because of the ink limitations. Filling the converter 2X will get rid of most of the air. If my syringes are handy, I'll use one to fill a converter. I AM a big stub nib fan and most of my pens have stub nibs. There is no stub nib option on this drop however. Which is fine, I went for the extra-fine because these have been discontinued in the US. I do have spare Lamy stub nibs so I'm all set.

Why only US shipping?

I am sure this is not Lamy and this is a Massdrop policy for this particular drop. Perhaps they could not absorb the shipping cost.... Eitherway I bought all 4 colors from EndlessPens and it only cost me $13.50 for international shipping

Penaddict23I wouldn't be surprised. MD has been rubbing me wrong with all these USA exclusives lately.

Thanks to this drop and a quick wikipedia search, I now know what "Ruthenium" is (a metal in the platinum group named after Russia).

A currently living Wikipedia editor might subscribe to the current view taken by Russia that it has claim to the old name Rus' (which was Ruthenia in Latin). Modern Ukraine disputes that, as Muscovy was originally a borderland of the Kyivan Rus' (Kyiv being the current capital of Ukraine) that remained relatively unscathed during the Mongol invasion (13th century) and gradually conquered the weakened metropoly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruthenia#Late_Middle_Ages). What the views of Karl Ernst Claus the discoverer of ruthenium were, we'll probably never know; it's equally possible that he was a loyal Russian subject and meant "Ruthenia" as Russian Empire, and that he was a learned man aware of local history and local identities (himself having been a Baltic German https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Germans).

keybersOut of curiosity I dug around a little more.
Wikipedia omits the fact that the name actually comes from another German scientist, Gottfried Wilhelm Osann. He accepted a position at an Estonian university and (along with others) worked with Russian platinum-rich ore from the Ural Mountains. In 1828 he thought he found three new elements which he gave the names Pluranium, Polinium, and Ruthenium. He later withdrew his claims because he had trouble isolating anything in particular. Karl Claus (who was working on the same ore at the same university) later isolated a new metal in 1844, and used one of Osann's names. He used the name both to honor his heritage and as a nod to Osann's work. Sooo, the name originally comes from a German-born scientist working at an Estonian university. On the topic of ruthenium and fountain pens, I found this article on tip composition interesting: https://www.nibs.com/blog/nibster-writes/wheres-iridium

Also has anyone used these? Are they smoother than the regular al star nibs? I like a fine nib but after several scratchy Lamy fine nibs (on Al-Stars), I've been sticking with Mediums

Writer7I have the Lamy al star in medium, fine, and extra. Tend to prefer the extra fine over the other two. Received my LX today with extra fine and to me it's seems smoother but could be all in my head. Using Noodler's Black in the converter that was purchased at the same time. My other pens have the Lamy ink cartridge so ink might be effecting my observation as well.

Writer7It's the same nib as the Safaris or AL-Stars, only painted black. They work just the same in my experience. I have a RoseGold EF and it's just as reliable as my other Safaris or AL-Stars.

eesparzaJust think--if you would have bought two of them, you would have saved $6.00! On the other hand, had you had the foresight to purchase 130,000 of them, you could have used the savings buy a new house. Bummer--if only!

Uhmuhguhd I am so happy. I had this in Rose Gold and Pd but misplaced the Rose Gold. Totally devastating until I saw this drop! Gonna pick up the Au one as well in a medium nib. These pens are so lovely, and write much more smoothly than the Safari and Al-star. They scratch pretty easily though so remember to put them back in the tube before you toss them in your bag. Looks like Drop doesn't offer the extra fine nib but I found that the EF was such a wet writer that the line width looked indistinguishable from the F.
