Just pony up and get a thermapen. While it might work only marginally better, an unconditional warranty is an unconditional warranty...

Yeah but Thermoworks.
Dr.McCoyWe stand behind our product and will gladly go head to head with the Thermapen on a performance test. The Javelin PRO Duo is lighter, slimmer, with a neat intelligent hold function and integrated magnets. On top of that, we have a large ambidextrous best-in-class FSTN display, which is far sharper and bolder than Thermapen's display. At half the price, a battery life in the thousands of hours, and a longer warranty period, we're confident you'll be satisfied with our product! But sure, Thermoworks.

LavatoolsI use mine (two of them) for HVAC troubleshooting. I went with the Javelin PRO Duo because of the speed and the magnet. I know it's not meant for what I am using it for but the HVAC thermometers in this style are just slow. I now of about 6 HVAC techs that I have showed this thermometer to that now use it themselves. To be honest I used to have the Thermapen. The Thermapen was the 1st food thermometer I used for HVAC troubleshooting. But, I lost my old Thermapen out of my tool bag and instead of replacing it I went with the Javelin and I like it better. The Javelin is a beast too. I am using it as a tool in a tool bag which it has last a year or so being beat up doing what I do for a living. At full retail the Thermapen is just not worth the extra 50 bucks. I highly recommend the the Javelin PRO Duo over the Thermapen MK4.

Could someone from Massdrop PLEASE review the shipping costs for this drop? Having to pay full price shipping for every additional item ordered is ridiculous!
We've just recently had a drop for the smaller Javelin PT12 and the shipping cost for additional items there was excellent, only a dollar or so extra for each additional unit you ordered.

Thanks for looking into this Lukas, and for the slight shipping reduction you've already put through. Hope there's more good news to follow :)
JaggiHey @Jaggi,
Unfortunately, we won't be able to make any further adjustments to this drop's shipping prices. Each drop's shipping price is dependent on a variety of factors including the weight, size, fulfillment method, and carrier. Rest assured that we're constantly looking to improve our shipping rates though, and I'll bring this drop up as an example of where we could improve in our meeting this week. Thanks for flagging this!

SwampyWait a second, let me check my temp with my fancy MD "meat probe." Oh yeah--no doubt about it, I'm chilled!

Does anyone know if it's safe to dip this into hot (maybe boiling) water? Thinking about soup, poached egg, coffee

Hey Massdrop, why is shipping to Australia no longer available on this drop?
Previous drops for the Javelin PRO Duo could be shipped to Australia and you still seem to be shipping to most other countries around the world, why not here anymore?

Looking at BBQ Galore's website, they don't seem to sell it. How does your relationship prevent you from shipping to Australia.

I hate to ask such a simple question, but I have never had a meat thermometer (or any kind of thermometer for cooking, with the exception of a candy thermometer that you just stick to the side of your pan).
If you are trying to test the temp of a roast that is in the oven, can you put this thermometer in the roast, and cook the roast, leaving the thermometer in the roast, or is this thermometer not meant to stay inserted in the meat, while the meat is cooking?
Sorry for such a simple question.

brenda52411Brenda, you would want a wired probe from a reputable company. The cheapo probe thermometers tend to be either inaccurate or have poor durability.
ThermoWorks sells great oven, smoker, and grill probes that are leave-in. (I have no affiliation, just a fan of their products). Something like the ThermoWorks DOT is what you want.
This Javelin Pro is designed for "spot checking" temperatures and leaving it in would probably damage it. The probe itself can handle the temperature of the oven just fine, but the other parts (battery, LCD, plastic housing, etc.) aren't meant to go in the oven.

dqnielThank you so very much. I will look for a ThermoWorks thermometer to put and stay in the oven.
Many thanks.

Is this significantly better than the the cheap 6 $ digital thermometer that are found everywhere?

I timed it tonight, to settle on a temp (no longer moving), my cheap one took 20 seconds (still was moving .1 degree occasionally, but it has a really long refresh, so I got tired of waiting), the Javelin took 13. Keep in mind, that's to get a final temp. To get what I'd classify as a "useful" temp (it's still moving, but it's not going to be more than another degree or two), my $20 took 13 or so seconds (again, slow refresh, I got sick of waiting, it was still moving multiple tenths every couple seconds), the Javelin took 8. (edit: I should add that I was measuring appetizers from the oven, and they wound up at about 200 degrees when I was measuring. Not sure why that'd be important, but it seems like some people would deem it so)
The thing about the Javelin compared to my cheap one is how often it refreshes. The temp indicator changes once every second or two on my cheaper one, with the Javelin you can literally watch it climb, and quickly get a good idea of where the final temp is going to land based off of how fast the temp is climbing. You can't do that with cheaper thermometers as the jumps are too big and take too long to register, if that makes sense. Basically, I can open my grill, stick the thermometer in, and within a couple seconds have an idea if my food is close to being done (temp is climbing fast, and I need to wait a few extra seconds to see exactly where I am) or I need to leave it for awhile. My other one refreshes so slowly that by the time I get any reasonably useful info, I've had it in for at least ten seconds.
Yes, this is unquestionably better than any $6 thermometer you'll get at Target (I know, I have one and it's useless for food. I used it to measure the temp of my baby's bath water because that's the only thing it's good for in my house). It's better than my $20 instant read, which is the same brand my dad used for years at his restaurant. I can't speak to whether or not it's better than a Thermapen (which will cost $60 more), but I can tell you that at that point I can't imagine any performance increase would be worth the extra $60. This is a solid product. If you want a good thermometer, get it. I joined this drop to get some for my family members for Christmas, that's how much I like it.
