Product Description
Designed to send a signal from a laptop to a higher-power amplifier, the M2 HiFace DAC can also be used to drive medium- to high-impedance headphones. It supports audio up to 384 kHz/32 bit, and has an output voltage of 2.0 Vrms and a THD+N of 112 dB Read More
It uses an XMOS controller and a PCM5102 chip, which places it outside of the standard range of Sabre implementations out of China. Of course, I'll always recommend a real DAC but if you want to put something in your pocket or takes up no space, the TI chip might not color the sound as much as a standard 9018 or 4490 family chip does. With these tiny low-power DACs, the chip is relied upon to do everything except drive the output or act as a USB controller; DAC chips do not produce their best sound functioning that way. Sabres (9018 family from China) sound etched and bright on their own. 4490 family from Japan tend to sound gooey / over-processed on their own. TIs, like the PCM and DSD families are known to offer good balanced sound, even though they lack of absolute performance and features of the above two chip lines.
GUTBHey! Look who's here...GUTB the TROLL. Who says $175 SMSL M8 is worst sounding https://www.massdrop.com/buy/smsl-m8/talk/627943 and $165 PCM5102 DAC on a stick is good.
You have outdone your self. Go troll elsewhere.
One look at this little rig and I was FORCED to read comments. As I travel this audio road, I realize that we don't 'post' a whole lot about just how important we value the looks of our equipment - right? An Orange Stick Type USB DAC with less than desirable oodles of text really becomes a moment of truth; it would have to knock it out of the park with specs; which I'm just not seeing. If this is the 80/20 rule where manufacturer's deliver 80% of the quality for 20% of the price - then it should cost 1/5 of Audioquest right? What did help me a little other than those of you gents that made me chuckle with comments (thank you) was Wondr____'s comment about unusually high Ohms-Output for the genre; relating to 'home-type' setups. But even then for over $150 there's a zillion small desktop DAC's that look at 'fit in' better. So doesn't it really need someone who needs it for portable - but if someone is concerned with hi-res to the the tune of 384kHz, wouldn't they have some decent IEMs with a stacked AMP/DAC or an AK, FiiO - etc. already? Maybe I don't get it but for me NO WAY can I see anybody using this is a desktop or home setup and if you've got a collection of true hi-res files and 'the rest of a quality' portable rig - are you setting this on the table with your gear at Starbucks, Work, School, Etc.. Maybe I have recently become an audio snob - but this thing has to be the most likely to become the 'what the heck was I thinking' or 'what's he smoking'? So mgeso - while you're explaining how other 'premium' portables don't handle 385kHz files - I honestly can't wrap my brain around how anyone can fill their drive with quality files, have the right cans - right player and Amp and then be proud poppa to insert this plastic pumpkin into their setup! PS - I admit that I'm superficial - and even tried to use a jumbo sharpie to color my Apple CCK (lightning to female USB A Female Adapter) to look prettier with my 7+ and iFi Micro BL Edition. Fortunately right around the time I first realized that the black gets a purple hue in the sunlight or brighter rooms - they finally started selling the adapters in Black on Amazon. If you read this far - sorry to waste your time because you weren't gonna buy this hideous thing either- and if you are getting ready to blast me for this post - that is okay - just call me a hater and enjoy your stack of 384z with your BuyDig Lot of Quantity (100) 2GB Flash-Drive-Looking Orange Masterpiece.

M2Tech HIFACE DAC: Sample Rates and Bit Depths: 16-32/44.1 to 24-32/384kHz supported
I purchased one of these for $350 CAD back in 2015. I do agree it looks like a piece of crap but it sounds absolutely amazing. I've used it over OTG with my Galaxy S6 running USB Audio Player Pro without a problem. Now it's currently sitting in my PINE64 - Volumio setup.
Honestly the design is really not pretty. Might be better if it came with a black colour and possibly even better material. At $200, while this is probably more powerful than the Centrance, it still looks super cheap compared to it. And putting it beside my Fulla, it looks seriously understated.
If this is powerful enough, perhaps this would be a good USB DAC/Amp for when I'm going back to my parents on holidays. They CANNOT find out how much I spent for audio products
This is actually pretty intriguing, because it is actually a 470 ohm output. A lot of these dongle-DACs are low-impedance and meant for headphones,so it's nice to see one actually meant to drive external equipment! Don't think I need it at the moment, but I am intrigued regardless!
Reviews around the web kinda say that:
1. It's a fantastic DAC
2. Its build is particularly flimsy
3. It does NOT have an amplifier, so it's best used in a chain that includes an amp, but not as direct headphone output (unless your HPs are stupid low impedance)
