This is a good way to think about it - it's a work lamp, not a flashlight.
I was in love with the idea of a right angle flashlight that I could just clip onto a backpack or what have you but between the short throw of the Maratec and the impracticality of actually pointing it where I want (unless where I want it is a fixed position) it wasn't what I was expecting.
I lost it at a beach bonfire and frankly don't miss it.

Here's the thing, a different drop here features the TEC Isotope Reactor Fob for $36.99. And even if you're satisfied with the price you still have to fork out another $35-$45 to stock it with tritium vials. And yet, 21 have sold so far and all of the goals have been met. It's just a dumb fob that hangs off of your keychain.

Yet, here, with a very useful device like a flashlight, there is obvious resistance to joining the drop. Only 7 have been purchased so far with 4 committed if the goal or 20 is met. With less than 2 days left this is in question. Why?
Because there is no consensus that a "deal" exists here. Especially for a site like Massdrop, the success of offers hinges on the perception that a "deal" exists with the 'group buying' concept. If very few perceive that a drop is a "deal" then there will be resistance and a lack of response.
In this case, the MSRP is $65 is unrealistic when sites like CountyComm are offering the same light for $48.50 and even have it on sale for $35 occasionally. With this kind of competition, even $42.99 is not perceived as a "deal" to jump at. There has to be a compelling reason to join and participate at sites like Massdrop. It should be the "deals". Unfortunately, this is not always the case. :-(
Am I being unreasonable here?

glennacPerfectly reasonable. It's simply not a deal. Maybe in a few months Countycomm will drop the price for reals on their site and then I'll pull the trigger, but not for this.

glennacTo your question why the community not joining the drop, inspite of its price & feature. My personal opinion & experience. Once after warranty, there is no after sales service assistance for part replacement you can expect from Massdrop. 14 months old brass AAA massdrop/lumintop, use as paper weight or bin it. I contact massdrop & lumintop cannot even buy the much needed tail cap due to its faulty e-switch. You dont buy a new flashlight every year, do you? Price is one issue, sometimr there is the sentimental issue behind the gift which the owner wish to get it fix & keep not replace

Massdrop, are you buying these somewhere for $30, then reselling to us at basically CountyComm's price? We expect if we, as a group, buy a ton of these lights, we could get them at a much better price than saving $1 or two.... Check out this screenshot of my CountyComm cart--in stock now and free shipping at $75 !

RHPICAYUNEFor guys in the US this is a crappy deal indeed. But for those who don't live in North America the total cost (price + shipping) of the TPF light looks enticing. A $4-ish shipping fee to PH? I might join this drop

SilverCrestWhat I did was picked up some round rare earth magnets on ebay for dirt cheap and crazy glued one to the bottom, worked like a charm. I cant remember the size I got but you can find them in almost the exact diameter of the light

What a shame. 🤔 I’ve been waiting for the Copper one to go on sale. But $5 bucks is not what I would consider a Deal on a nearly $50 item. Then, you lose the $5 break when you choose the Copper one. After still paying shipping AND have to wait several weeks? There’s no discount here at all. What’s the advantage over simply buying it at CountyComm for $48.50?
There is suppose to be an advantage to group buying here. But I don’t see it, especially in this case. 🤷🏻‍♂️

None of the photos show the button end. What kind of button is it? Clicky? Rubber? Or Electronic?

If it's anything like CountyComm's regular twist-cap AAA lights, you'll want to turn it a full 180 degrees to prevent it bumping and turning on in a pocket, anyway, so the lense will get turned toward your bag/leg/etc, and be pretty well protected, as well. Not a bad design, if you don't mind needing both hands to turn on a light.

glennacIt doesn't have a switch. :-( Mine arrived today. The description states "three different brightness settings, each of which is accessed by twisting the base"... Er, no. You twist the head anti-clockwise to unscrew it a little to turn it off. Then screw it back clockwise to turn it on. Turning it off and then on switches to another brightness setting. I took the tail switch from another Maratac copper AAA torch, and screwed this in place of the TPF's tailcap, and this gives it a proper switch that works as I expected.
