With the success of the Massdrop AAA and Vega flashlights, we knew our next flashlight had to be a knockout. But rather than go with a conventional step up in battery power, we wanted to offer something the EDC community could really make their own Read More

It took a bit to break in and is now one of my favorites!!
I have been looking forward to putting this light into my EDC rotation but I'm not convinced it'll make it now. On first look, the light is solid, the body is beautifully machined and it has a good heft to it. The light feels good in the hand and fits well in my pocket. It wasn't until I turned this light on that I started having issues. The tail switch is loose in it's housing and not as nice as the rest of the light. When I turn the light on, sometimes it will flash, others it will turn on, and sometimes nothing happens at all. I removed the switch and board assembly out of the tail piece but I don't dare try to remove the switch from the board. I cleaned up the connection between the tailcap and the body and that seemed to help a little but it is still erratic. All in all, this light is a looker, but is lacking in the reliability category. Edit: I've been using this light for about 4 months now and while it didn't really "do it" for me to begin with, it has become one of my go-to lights for EDC. The switch issue that I mentioned above seems to have worked itself out. There is a short delay between the button press and the lights response, but it works every time. The body of the light is taking on a beautiful patina and is turning into quite the conversation piece. Even with the switch issue in the beginning, I'm glad I bought this and would recommend it to anyone.

The flashlight arrived in a practically crushed box, which was hugely disappointing to see after having to wait longer than the originally promised shipping date for my Path light to arrive. The packaging was pretty plain-jane, there's honestly nothing to it. So I get a crushed, plain-jane box on a first production run product. Wonderful. Despite the packaging damage, the flashlight itself arrived in practically perfect shape. The additional replacement components (o-ring replacment & stainless steel reversible pocket clip) were also accounted for in the damaged packaging and were also not harmed in the shipment. Anyways, gripes aside, here's the actual review. I bought the cool white CREE LED version of the PATH with a solid copper body, mainly so that if using this as a search light in an emergency my eyes would be getting a broader range of colors reflecting back at them and thus making it easy to find what I need to find much quicker. Let me just say that the option to increaes or decrease the size of the flashlight and gain the capability to insert an additional CR123/RCR123 battery is pretty cool. The flashlight is indeed solid copper and while I wish there was some extra or deeper nurled grip zones along the length of the flashlight segments, the flashlight clip once installed makes reconfiguring the body so much easier because it provides a lot of leverage. The output of the cold CREE LED at max brightness while using two CR123s (full size configuration) is nothing short of a nuclear apocalypse. Seriously, even the light scattering from my office's carpeted floor became unbearable after only a couple of seconds. Thank god I didn't try out the first burn using RCR123's instead, which I'm told beefs up the lumen output pretty signficantly over the CR123 configurations. Even the half-size configuration using a single CR123 battery was almost equally staggering as the full-size configuration at max brightness. I also like the simplified brightness selection system that uses half-presses to step through each brightness level in sequence with the power button and upon arriving at the appropriate brightness level for the job simply push the same button fully in to lock the setting. If you're familiar with a lot of the other popular flashlight brands offered here on Drop, you'd know the struggle of having to perform half-twists of the end caps, doing a little dance of hokey pokey, and burning some sage while praying for the blessings of the woodland goddess just might get your flashlight on the setting you actually want. Overall, it's a super bright flashlight with size and metal reconfiguration options for the chassis and brightness settings. It feels solid in-hand with just the right amount of hand weight to it. The Path is super easy to program and lock in a desire brightness setting with a single handed grip, and it seems to be super efficient in power draw while making use of either CR123 or RCR123 batteries because I've been using this flashlight pretty much non-stop after it finally arrived and it is stil just as nuclear bright as it was when it first arrived. The Path doesn't have all the extra bullshit bells and whistles, it just does what it's supposed to do very well and with high efficiency in energy consumption. If you're okay with a lack of unnecessary marketing ploys on your flashlight purchases, then definitely jump on this one while you still can!

I picked the copper version of this light. Build quality is great. Light provides ample light for a pocket light. It does a get a bit warm on maximum output when used for an extended time. Battery life is decent. I love the weight and heft. Copper is discoloring nicely. This is actually my second one, I lost the first one and had to have another. The original is somewhere at the Johnson Space Center or surrounding area.

A promising prototype...
I received my Path (in copper), this week, and was initially very impressed. It feels nice in the hand, is pretty well machined, and when I first put in two SureFire CR123a's, the beam was impressive. In taking it apart and trying to use it with only one CR123, though, something happened. Not quite sure what. At first, with one it did not want to work at all. I rebuilt it with two, and it started blinking on high? I went back to one, and it was working again, on all three settings. When I rebuilt it with both, however, it would not operate at all. The next day, it would only operate on low. Replacing the batteries fixed the problem, but I should not have drained the batteries that significantly in less than half an hour of playing with it (Cycling through the settings). To clarify some things, the Path does have memory. If you cycle the modes with half-presses, and then shut it off with a full press, another full press will return you to that setting. If you cycle the modes with full presses, it will start on low after the reset delay. This is not mentioned in the specifications. My single 3V CR123a was able to operate on three modes, but this may have been the cause of the problems I had later, draining one of my batteries substantially. Overtightening the flashlight can cause it to not work. I am unsure as to why this is the case, but this is undesirable. If your Path is not turning on, try unscrewing one section slightly. 18650's do not fit in the flashlight. This is confirmed by the specifications. The low mode is about as bright as the high mode on the Massdrop AAA flashlight. I would like to see version 2 scaled up 2mm in diameter, and shipped with a two-part sleeve for CR123 operation. The button click is very mushy, and feels rather gross. I would like to see that improved also. I quite like this light, except for those small issues. Hopefully Drop will revise this, and release a second version with a little more umph to it. I would also like to see a moonlight mode, <3 lumen, as a super-low setting. The packaging it came in was also lackluster, see attached photo. If this was my first experience with a massdrop-made product, I am not sure I would try another. Update: I tightened the tail cap and illuminator assemblies, after adding a dash of silicone grease to all of the O-rings, and the flashlight no longer ceases to work when fully tightened, and the button does not feel near as mushy, though it is still less pleasant than my Vega (AA), or the AAA buttons.

EDIT: One died. I've barely used these and one has already died after 16months. Pretty chinese junk. I'm pretty happy overall with this light. I have the warm/yellowish led and I like the more classic incandescent look of the light. Max output is bright enough for anything I need. Its solidly built and very pretty to look at. This light would make a nice gift. Its not lightweight, so you might not want this for your ultralight camping adventure. I consider this more of a "nice thing" purchase than a most-optimal-practical-option kind of thing. I was attracted to the flexibility of being able to run a single battery for a more compact option, but was a little disappointed that the smaller configuration is still pretty big compared to other single battery lights out there. Still, if you don't anticipate needing a long runtime and want to take something smaller, it does the job well on a single cell. A 18650 option would have been nice, but I don't mind the smaller (R)CR123s. I can charge them in the same charger and they also work in my other 18650 lights. The main negative I've found so far is that this light can get pretty hot. Not like you could get injured from it hot, but after a few minutes on high it can start to get uncomfortably hot in you hand. The copper/brass metal case does a great job of dissipating heat, but unfortunately some of that goes into your hand. Its only an issue if you run on high for an extended time. Overall, I'm happy with it. I like the flexibility to run one or two cells. The main complaints I read were lack of 18650 compatibility and no moonlight mode. Neither of those were a deal breaker for me though. The price was reasonable IMO.

pallentxCan anyone confirm if there is a lockout mode so that it doesn't accidentally turn on in your pocket? Also for a more condensed beam light do you use that filter in the picture or do you remove the filter?

KiefofpoliceI'm not aware of any lockout mode, but I haven't had an issue with it coming on in my pocket. I'm not sure what you mean by 'filter'. There's a head unit with the led, a tail unit with the switch, and body sections you can put together to chose your size. There's only one beam pattern option.

Meh...it didn't even last three months.
It's well built physically but the insides are not up to par. The feel of the flashlight it nice, but it is not EDC just based on weight and the thickness of the light. Last week I went to shorten the light to carry it in my pocket. Reassembled and it won't turn on. Tested both batteries and they are 100%. Worse, DROP takes over a week to respond and I am still in the holding pattern waiting for support for this exceptionally overpriced paperweight. The low rating is due to the lack of support and it's failure at less than one year.

Reasonably priced, very bright
This light is as bright as you'd hope it would be. I chose copper, I am not sure I love it since every time I use it I can smell the copper on my hands, but it looks nice enough. Used it to find a missing cat at 2 am, so that was worth it for the price. I can't recommend losing cats at 2 am, I can recommend this light to look for stuff in the dark.

Love the idea that you can switch out different sized batteries. However the flashlight itself has underperformed. The on/off button sticks and have to cycle 2 or 3 times until it actually turns on. When it does turn on it has a nice warm colour and stays on. Have swapped out different batteries with the same “sticking” issue. Not bad but not a great light.

Good light.
Cool light And pretty close to my 1000 lumen Streamlight. The first pic is the stream light, and the second is the Path Convertible at about 60 yards.
