Thank you for offering this drop.  Is the main cost savings accomplished by moving production to China, versus in-house production at EE in Minnesota?  The only other difference I can find is a very slight increase in weight (2-ish ounces?).

You said it! An ultralight hiker's closet is definitely not ultralight! However, it makes sense. They take only what they need; therefore, a different bag for every 15 degrees F temperature change..!

I'm happy I looked at this and saw it was made in China, I'm not against buying overseas goods, but for a $200+ quilt I'm going to do my best to get from a domestic company. Was looking forward to getting one of these, but I'm going to keep looking.

The sewn footbox with UGQ is very well done and adds I think 2oz to the quilt...that info is on their site if you read down below on the product page (might be in another section of the site also/instead...have not looked lately). Plus you are getting usually another ounce or so of down for the same temp rating as with EE's models (you pay for this extra down of course, but UGQ has consistently had fantastic pricing on down for the last 2-1/2 years, and that's a very good extra ounce to have...plus you can add more if you want instead of going to the next warmer model as EE makes you do). They're both great quilts, but one company likes to play the numbers game over the warmth game, which is fine for how most people camp (mostly temperate weather). If you really want to focus on weight and maintain the warmth, then go full custom on sizing and materials with Nunatak, where you can get everything you want, exactly what you need, and nothing you don't. It'll cost a bit more.

StepbystepThanks for the feedback! Weight was pretty critical for me (more so than cost), largely because I practically make an entire bed when I'm backpacking. I think for my needs right now, the Enigma at 20F will be fine, but I will definitely look into Nunatak when I feel comfortable exploring alpine regions. I've been using a 50F quilt from Big Agnes for a while, and I've used it down into the mid-high 30s by wearing warmer clothing and bringing a warmer bag liner, so I think any quilt I get at this point is going to be warmer than what I have. :P But this is great info and gives me something else to save for, as there is very little else I need in my gear lineup.

I wouldn't do that, being someone else's work product, even though it was public and free to download...but!...I just searched and found a link to the paper where you can download all 280 pages of it (some of which is not very relevant to us, although interesting). Probably should have tried that first instead of pretending massdrop was like facebook, eh. It's well worth the read if you want to geek out on feathers.

Just got my quilt and there are several spots where the down doesn’t fill the baffles. I fluffed it up in the dryer and still see areas where there’s no down. Is this normal for a 20 degree quilt or is mine defective?

Thanks! I spoke to Tyler at EE on January third and he said $40 to fix the quilt. Do you remember what day you contacted EE? Just trying to figure out if they stopped or started doing warranty repairs. Thanks!

I have two, a 20 and 40 deg in Reg/Wide, and highly recommend them. 40 covers most hot summer activities. 20 covers most PNW spring/summer activities at elevation. The Reg/Wide will work as an under guilt with a little modification connecting to the WarBonnet Ridgerunner. - Wearing some additional clothing layers (Polartec, Power Grid, Baselayer): I have run the 40 under, and the 20 above, successfully down to 10 Deg. (with rainfly in use) - I have gone even lower adding more clothing layers, and a sleeping pad to the mix.

For snow camping I layer the two together (20 inside the 40), and use a OR bivy sack. Minimal wight gain for the additional loft, plus an extra "baffle". - For the bivy set up in the future I may get the Revelation APEX 40, to trade out the down one, due to condensation that the bivy creates on the outer layer; mostly for piece of mind.
I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has.

Hello Everyone,
All the Revelation quilts shipped in mid-December and we’re excited to learn about how you’ll be using your quilt in upcoming adventures! Please be sure to share your pictures and stories in this Discussion.
Thank you to everyone who already posted after you received your quilts. Three questions have surfaced since members started receiving their quilts and we would like to address them here.
1) The quilts weigh less than what is listed in the Specs. Great news! We were conservative with stating the weight of the quilt, and it turns out that the fabric and baffles are a little lighter than we estimated, so the quilt is even lighter than anticipated. The weight savings was not from skimping on down fill, as some have suggested. The quilts have the full amount of down that was specified in the product page, which is the same density, according to the same formula, that EE uses on all of their Revelations.
2) There is a horizontal seam near the leg area of some quilts, but not all. True - this is normal and should be expected for all Regular/Wide and Long/Wide quilts. The widest quilt from one width of fabric is about 54", so to make a quilt that is wider requires sewing two fabric pieces together. This is true of all Revelations, regardless of origin, and also true on all wide quilts from other manufacturers.
3) It appears that the down in the middle chambers isn’t lofting as high as it should, especially compared with the outer-most chamber. There are a few things at play here. Most importantly, the quilts need a full day to loft back up and may benefit from some shaking to help the feathers bounce back and re-distribute. Still, once that is done, the outer-most baffle will always look more fully stuffed because the outer edge is sewn down to the width of fabric rather than the 1.5" baffle that is on all the inner chambers. The rest of the chambers won’t look round and firm like those on an ultralight down jacket, at least not when laying flat on the ground. The baffle dimensions change when you wrap it around you in quilt mode, and that's what is correctly designed to keep you warm. The amount of down in each chamber has been measured to be the same as all other Revelation quilts. EE has checked a number of quilts and after given a day to loft, they meet all of their quality expectations. The real test is that the quilt insulates well, regardless of how you think it should look laying flat or hanging in front of a window.
Thank you everyone for posting in the discussion with your questions and photos. We hope this answers your questions, and please remember to give your quilt a day or two to loft fully. Feel free to continue posting in the discussion with your thoughts. And, if you feel like you have an actual manufacturing issue with your quilt, please reach out to Massdrop Customer Service (not EE). Thanks!
We are grateful for everyone who participated in the launch of this collaborative product - you made it all possible. Here’s to many more adventures together!
Sincerely, Danny Milks / Massdrop Tim Marshall / Enlightened Equipment

The quilts are all about 0.5 oz (14g) lighter than what is the in the specs right now, due to the savings from fabric and baffle weight. I'll have the specs updated shortly, and will post here again. [edit - the specs have been updated on the product page]

DannyMilksDon’t agree the fabric weight of the 15D should weigh more than EE 10D ! if you buy from EE of a reg length and reg wide the weight is 21.13 if I add one side 20D the weight is 23.13 plus to gain the same temp rating of Down from Duck the bag will have to weigh more! Massdrop calculations just don’t add up and I am seriously wondering to what I have purchased. I haven’t used mine in the UK due to this!

I am thrilled to announce this collaboration with Minnesota-based Enlightened Equipment. The Revelation Quilt is the most recommended sleeping bag/quilt in discussions and polls, and the most requested Ultralight item on our site. So if you're looking to get a quilt, this is the one to get. The unique design closes securely at the footbed to avoid drafts, is tapered around the legs to keep them warm, and is larger around the torso to keep you warm in your favorite sleeping position.
Compared to the original EE Revelation, here are a few changes we've made: 1) 15 denier fabric throughout, which we find to be the most desirable denier. It is a little more durable than 10d and a little lighter than 20d. 2) 800-fill down. The cost premium for going to 850 or higher is significant in a 20 degree quilt or sleeping bag, and the weight savings is fairly small.  3) An additional 5% of down fill, which is mainly to keep the down from migrating over years of use. 4) Free shipping to US and discounted international shipping
And for those of you wondering about quilts and why you would choose one over a sleeping bag, here are my thoughts: It's as comfortable and warm as a sleeping bag (assuming you wear appropriately warm headwear) but without the limiting factor of a set size (claustrophobia much?) or the weight/bulk of a zipper and down underneath you. I started using a quilt 14 years ago and I couldn't imagine going back to the confines of a sleeping bag. My whole family uses EE quilts for backpacking, car camping and travel.
We have had a few drops for EE quilts before, and they made our own Massdrop quilt. However, capacity was always a limiting factor, which meant our members kept waiting and waiting for the next drop. And so we have spent the better part of this year searching for the highest quality manufacturing partner that could produce up to our collectively high expectations. These quilts are manufactured in the same factory that makes the top-end sleeping bags for the best Japanese and American outdoor brands, the same stuff that you'll find in REI. These are made according to the exact same specifications as all US-made EE quilts.
For our members who want a different EE quilt, you can still order any possible combination of fabrics, colors, temp rating and down fill on their site in numerous models and styles. Some items are pre-made while custom orders are usually take 2-4 weeks, and US shipping is under $15.
Thanks for your votes, requests and comments - this has helped us bring this collaboration to life.
-Danny

Are you satisfied with the amount and quality of the down fill? Do you have any other sleeping bags to compare with your quilts?

GregoryHYes, I already have the 30 degree Revolution from EE, and the MassDrop 20 degree I received has very good loft - other than the bloody seam, I am impresssd with the workmanship. However, I have to wonder if the outer lining is 15 or 20 d, as it is noticeably thicker than my 10d 30 degree version (which is burnt orange color).

$220 for a quilt made in China? No thank you. I can get a piece of handmade/American made gear from other cottage vendors for much less, and it'll basically weigh the same.

The cottage vendors I listed make true top quilts. They're basically the same design as EE. The only difference is whether or not you want the pad attachment straps. Here's a picture of my Loco Libre top quilt.

I purchased a Revelation from EE almost 2 years ago. I use it on my pad in or out of a tent. Its a short length regular width. It covers me fine. It isnt made specifically for a hammock. I use it to stay warm a variety of ways on the trail.

As I had posted in January, my short/reg came in at 20.1 ounces. That's still 0.6 ounces below the "revised" specs that were supposed to take into account the lighter-than-expected materials. I contacted Massdrop support in January when it was still considered 1.1 ounces light and they were pretty clueless. I waited around to get Danny's response on this board, which I would summarize as: Every quilt we've checked has been perfect and there is no way for customers to tell by looking/measuring/weighing/etc that the quilt won't perform as advertised; the only measure is whether or not it keeps you warm.
I tested it head-to-head against my Sierra Designs Backcountry blanket 700 which has an EN lower limit of 27 F and comfort limit of 37 F. I used it in my garage on a very cold night with the Klymit insulated lite and a mid-weight baselayer top and bottom. The ground was below freezing (pushing the limits of the Klymit) but I would guess the air temperature was mid- or upper 30s. The EE blanket was adequate in these conditions and when I switched in the night to the Sierra Designs I would it was comparable and maybe a bit warmer than the EE blanket.
In the end I decided it wasn't worth the hassle of dealing with a return or repair. Massdrop support continued to disappoint when they emailed me again on March 9 to let me know there had been an update about the quilts and provided a link to Danny's mid-January post. I used it on the "O" circuit in Torres del Paine but I don't think the temp was ever below 40F. Fortunately I sleep warm but I am pretty convinced that the quilt I got was more of a 30 degree than a 20 degree.
Here are my take-home thoughts and advice based on my experience: -To future Massdrop customers interested in this quilt: Temper your expectations. I was expecting a premium outdoor product for a 20% discount. A subgroup of people may have gotten this but I think many people were happy because they weren't expecting as much from the quilt as I was. If you think you tend to have high expectations just spend the extra money to get it direct from EE. -To Massdrop: If you do this drop again please set up some quality tolerances. Now there shouldn't be any questions about the weight of the stitching, etc. I don't know what is appropriate but I would say having a short/reg quilt come in 0.6 ounces below is outside an acceptable tolerance. -To Enlightened Equipment: I would think twice before doing this again, especially if you and Massdrop can't come up with a better QC process. It's hard to put a price on your brand's reputation. A decent number of people were unhappy enough with what they got to post some pretty critical stuff on here and I'm sure what they told their friends was as bad or worse.

mkwhalinI didn't order from this drop because I knew I wanted to order from EE, and the cost difference wasn't enough for me to not order from them. I have the 20F Enigma (same as revelation, but closed footbox because it is a winter bag for me) and I have comfortably used it into the upper 20s with an insulated pad and bag liner (even getting too hot and having to shed my puffy and socks/hat.) I suspect I could use this below 20 (especially if I wasn't solo and had another body in the tent for warmth, be it a human or a dog), but I am also a warm sleeper compared to other women and some men. That being said, I do think that if you're a warm sleeper and not able to sleep comfortably in this with reasonable layers, it COULD be a QC issue. But MD was really upfront about this being made in China, and while I think plenty of things made in China are just fine, this was NOT one I was willing to risk. It's really hard to take your hand sewn bag and have the same quality at a factory overseas. It just isn't going to be the same. I am really disappointed that EE seems unwilling to address the issues for people who bought on MD. I don't think it will put their reputation at risk necessarily (they have some devoted fans, myself included), but it does put a stain on their reputation that is a bit hard to remove.

mkwhalinSounds like EE/MD took their 20% off a little too far: 20% off the price for you - 20% off the down cost for them ;-) Seriously though: raw deal. I wouldn't put my name on this product if I were EE.
