With a rounded 45-millimeter case and large, lumed orange hands, the Avalon immediately calls to mind pilot watches, but Melbourne Watch Company has included some details to make this one stand out from the crowd. Let’s start with the dial, which features a circular pattern of seven grooves that draw the eye to the center, which is also textured with a mini wave pattern. Absent of numerals, the dial features orange indexes, with larger markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12. This gives the watch a compass-like or crosshair effect. The stainless steel case is coated with matte black DLC for an understated contrast to the bright markers on the dial. Also notable is the open-heart design between 5 and 6, offering a peek at the movement from the front.
Founded in, you guessed it, Melbourne, Australia in 2013, Melbourne Watch Company first sprung onto the scene with the Flinders: a crowd-funded and community-designed timepiece that received enormous success. Since that launch, MWC has expanded its product line to include five more models, each offering a distinctly Aussie approach to traditional watch aesthetics. Every MWC watch is named for a notable location in the company's home of Melbourne—from Flinder Street Station to the Avalon Airfield.
