Product Description
Established in 1929 in Tokyo, Japan, writing company OHTO is credited with many technical inventions, such as the world’s first roller pen with a ceramic writing ball. The Graphic Liner drawing pens feature sturdy metal tips designed to produce the same pigmented lines you’d get from their felt-tipped counterparts Read More
I'm so nerdily excited to get these babies! I just paid $20 for a four pack of Copic liners, so I'm thrilled to get 12 of these for $18.99 + shipping. Indeed a happy bunny!
These are great, for disposable pens. Good for writing, ok for drawing. They're not real technical pens, though. They have the metal barrel that lets you get close to a straight edge, but at the tip of that barrel is a rollerball.
I am quite familiar... with the black ones, at least. Never messed with Pigma's colored pens. The ink quality is easily as good as Microns. I've only owned my Graphicliners for about 4 years now, so I don't know how well it holds up over time, but they look fine so far. I expect their archival qualities to equal Microns.
Line quality is better and worse. Microns are proper technical pens, with a hard tip. This means that with proper technique (angle, speed of movement), you'll have dead-perfect lines until the pen runs dry. Since Graphic Liners are rollerballs, they nearly always drop a little blob of ink at the start of a line. Here's a closeup I took with my... iphone 4? maybe? back in 2012 for a review.

I'm afraid I don't have any Microns here at work, but here's a comparison with a couple of Copic Multiliners. They're functionally identical to Microns, but with a metal body and replaceable ink reservoir/tip. All lines were drawn top to bottom. You can see my lazy starts on the left-most lines and more even motion towards the right of each group.

The 5 on the left are all OHTO Graphic Liner 005, the 3 in the middle are Copic Miltiliner SP 0.3, and the two on the right are Copic Multiliner SP 0.1. The tail at the end is my fault in all cases.
Of course, for line quality, the Microns and Multiliners don't match the Rapidographs, but those can be a real pain in the tuchus to keep clean, keep from dripping, and keep from drying out.
Just wanted to let others know that a single 6 pack of the assorted is available for 9.99 with free 4-5 day shipping for prime members

In case you want to try one pack first, or buy 2 packs and still pay less then this drop, without the wait 😒
(maybe worth it for the 10 packs of single sizes? I dunno, I only saw individual pens for sale, but didn't look that hard since i was interested in the assorted)
Josh_CI have tried both. I personally prefer these Ohto. I use the pens for drawing so i primarily use only the smallest sized nis.
Sakura nibs wear out VERY fast (at least for the nib sizes i use) and cannot handle fast strokes from drawing.
These Ohto pens though are made of metal. Dont have to worry about going too fast or the nibs wearing out before you use up all the ink. Very good for writing and drawing as well.
The downside of Ohto is that because they are rollerballs and not straight nib, they will leave a little blob at the start unless you are a quick writer or can draw quick. It took some practice but you can normally work around it.
I would recommend the Ohto over the Sakura Microns anytime, anywhere. Especially considering that they tend to be the same price (single prices, Sakura tends to sometimes be $1 more expensive than Ohto depending on where you look)
The six pack variety size is $9.98 on Amazon right now (07/17/18). Two sets with with free shipping for Prime members come out to a total of $19.96 compared to $21.74 on Massdrop - and you don't have to wait over a month to receive them.
There was a comment from a drop nine weeks ago pretty much saying the same thing so it's been nine weeks and this is still a very poor deal.
Purchased a pack of the finest point pens last time around and I love them. I use them for writing, not drawing. These pens have the seemingly magical ability to lay down ink like a gel pen but the lines dry immediately. It will take me a while to burn through the 10 pack. Great buy.
I'm a professional artist and I use these pens myself. I think they're great because they're essentially rollerball pens with waterproof ink in various sizes. It's like having a micron pen, but not having to worrying about wearing down the tips. Been using them for years with no issues. If ink dries out, I would just refill it with more waterproof ink...very simple. These will probably last a lifetime.
You can find them cheaper on Amazon. DO BETTER MASSDROP!!!
Another crappy notification by Massdrop. I would have purchased a pack of 10, but all individual packs are already sold out. Not sure why they send out these notifications so late in the drop period. I'll have remember to notify for later.
MASSDROP, please add a notify me later if an existing drop is still on-going, but the size/quantity desired is no longer available.
thanks.
