(Old update thread here.) Sept 17th Update: Unfortunately shipments of the latest Planck run will be delayed. Final PCB sign-off took longer than anticipated, and some of the component lead times slipped after we ordered them. We've been told all of the PCBs will be complete by October 9th, and then compiling and packaging all of the kits will take approximately 10 days, with the shipment being ready on October 19th. Air freight from China should have the pallets of ~2000 kits at our warehouse around 10/26, and we should be shipping around 10/31. We'll be posting in the discussions with weekly updates to let you know if/when these timelines shift. Thanks for your patience! Oct 1st Update: Working on getting you guys an updated ETA from the vendor. Haven't heard from them but should have some info in the coming days. Oct 6th Update: Nothing new to share, I'm thinking we'll get a progress report from the CM in the next day or two. We should know whether the PCBs are done or not really soon... Oct 7th Update: Contract manufacturer said everything is on track to be done by 10/19 as per previous expectations. Stay tuned. Oct 12th Update: Will get another update for everyone shortly. Oct 14th Update: Still on track based on our latest communications from the contract manufacturer. Oct 19th Update: Shipping out of China has slipped a few days, nothing major but the manufacturer said they needed a couple of days to get everything finalized and in perfect shape. Expecting to get our inbound freight tracking around Oct 21/22. Oct 23rd Update: Cargo has been picked up from the factory and is going to make its way to us. Shipping queues are quite lengthy (and volatile) and we've been told we should expect the cargo in the first week of November. This changes daily depending on the flights going back and forth from Asia and the availability. I'll update again middle/end of next week. Oct 28th Update: Cargo arrived at JFK tonight a bit ahead of schedule. It still needs to clear customs (fingers crossed it happens on Thurs/Friday), then it needs to get booked onto a truck and taken to our warehouse, and then unpacked + counted, repacked + shipped. I'd still use Nov 6th as the estimated shipping date, it could move forwards, or backwards by a few days. Oct 29th Update: Heads up to people on the fence about purchasing a Planck, the price of it is going to increase once it goes into stock "shipping immediately". You have a few more days to take advantage of the $100 price tag while it's on pre-order. Oct 30th Update: Hasn't cleared customs yet :( Backlogged since there's lots of commercial shipments coming in for the holiday selling season. We're being told it should be cleared on Monday. Nov 1st Update: It's the weekend, why are you obsessively checking for updates? Nov 2nd Update: Cleared customs this morning, they're picking it up tomorrow, and delivering it to our warehouse on Wed Nov 4th. 50% chance it'll start shipping to you on Friday, 50% chance it'll ship Monday/Tuesday. I'm pushing them to get it out Friday! (10% chance it starts to ship on Thursday Nov 5th, because we always put in a 110% effort). Nov 4th Update: Truck pulled up at 2:37PM EST today and unloaded many many many pallets of keyboards. So many keyboards. Plancks and Plancks of keyboards. The workers started unpacking and receiving and were told if they found an extra unit, they'd be in so much trouble they'd be forced to walk the Planck. Assuming counting is done tomorrow morning (we're faster than Pennsylvania over here), we'll be shipping Friday. Nov 5th Update: We're starting to ship orders! Nov 5th Update 2: Warehouse is closed for the day. They got 311 units shipped out today, I expect most of the remaining orders will ship tomorrow and over the weekend. Nov 9th Update: So the weekend shift at the warehouse seemed to have made some mistakes that are being sorted out and coordinated with Fedex right now. It looks like duplicated tracking numbers were issued due to some sort of API error between Fedex, the warehouse, and our systems. They halted shipments over the weekend and the weekday team was at the warehouse today troubleshooting it the issue with Fedex. We don't have a definitive answer on what the final resolution is (the temporary one from the Fedex account rep is that all packages shipped with duplicate tracking numbers will deliver properly, but not have accurate tracking.) But that's a temporary answer and we're waiting for more definitive information. This affects ~700 shipments of all kinds of products (not just Planck). We're on top of the issue and I'll keep posting updates as I hear them. Nov 12th Update: Just to clarify shipping vs order dates. There is a group of you (1704 to be precise) that ordered between June 25, 2020 and September 18, 2020. Those orders had an original "estimated ship date" of Sept 21st, which was obviously delayed to early November and all 1704 orders have now shipped. There is a second group of 246 people, that ordered after October 5th (and up to, as recently as today, and/or are joining the active pre-order right now). Those people's orders have an estimated ship date of Dec 28th. Realistically we're probably going to be shipping these in early December assuming no delays.

KevinI guess I've seen worse group buy delays, where shipment happened a year after their original dates. A 6-week push back is pretty mild in the grand scheme of things and luckily those PCB's have been revised after feedback from the faulty USB-C ports from the previous drop. At least now, my Carina drop and OLKB drop will be roughly the same dates together.

Really looking forward having the kit, I can't tell you how many videos I've watched and how much I've read about mapping some Spanish characters through QMK. I am sure I'll love the Planck. In 5 years I'll still be using the keyboard and won't remember any delays ;) Btw it's awesome that the RGB leds upgrade is included!

KevinHere's a photo that the PCB manufacturer sent to us, showing that they're adding extra solder to the USB Port when making these boards. Reminder/note that the previous iteration had a defect rate of the USB port that was slightly elevated but not critical (nowhere near the 'awful QC mess of USB ports snapping off' that people seem to believe). Hopefully the defect rate will be near 0% with this additional step.

CaadiazsiSure! The thing is we will have to compile QMK from source and add a Spanish codes library, you can check it out here: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/blob/master/quantum/keymap_extras/keymap_spanish.h In order to compile from source you can check out this tutorial. It’s not easy if you haven’t coded before, but if you follow it step by step you shouldn’t have issues: https://youtu.be/-HLV6mUxNnU So, no fancy GUI support as the online tool doesn’t support additional libraries, but it really isn’t that hard.

KevinHow does adding more solder resolve the issue? I thought the issue was that the connectors were tearing the pads from the PCB. The pad size has not been increased to take the structural load? Over filling the fillet will not change the mechanics of the pad to the PCB. It’ll still tear no matter how much solder you glob into it.

james.robertsI'm not a product engineer but I trust the PCB contract manufacturer knows what they're doing on this. Despite not being a product engineer I'll hazard a guess that if it was a fundamental design flaw that you're implying, it would be inherent in every PCB, we'd have a much higher defect rate.

james.robertsNot really. Pulling a connector from a pad would just be a result of a bad solder. Pulling a pad from a PCB occures when there is stress on the pad. This stress usually happens when the connector has too much play.

nononoko“Not really.” What do you mean here? Respectively I don’t see how you have addressed my question, which was what precisely were the modes of failure. What does “bad solder” imply in your statement? Not enough solder can be attributed to both the application of the solder during assembly and the pad design. if the pad footprint is too narrow you will just end up stacking solder on top of itself. The temperature during application can contribute to the quality of joint including bond strength. We were shown a “solution” ( more solder ) but I don’t believe a problem statement with a corresponding appropriate resolution has been provided. It’s not like I am asking to see a 8D or the like although arguably that should be available.

james.robertsI saw in a previous update that the manufacturer would be using through hole USB connectors rather than surface mount. The failure was happening at the bottom of the board. Previous revisions had no pins sticking through to the top of the board. Changing the connector types alone should fix the issue whether the pads are ripping or the solder is breaking. Even if we get the same exact connectors, extra solder on the mounting legs (from the top of the board) should still solve the problem since it looks like the mounting legs are falling out intact with broken solder still attached. I could be wrong here but the problem statement and resolution match. TL;DR: Different connectors, more solder.

EPonyATo be fair, group buy delays are not exclusive to Drop, nor are they exclusive to the Covid era. Pretty much anything that could cause a delay is outside Drop's control. Their main job in all this is to help manage our expectations, which definitely seems like a balancing act. If they're too pessimistic about the ship date, they'll have fewer purchases. Too optimistic, and they'll be seen as unreliable in the event of a delay. Personally, I'd prefer they estimate a later ship date so that we could be pleasantly surprised when it ships earlier. There was an airport -- can't remember which -- that had a mountain of complaints about how long baggage claim would take after the plane's arrival. Their solution was to simply move baggage claim further away from the gate! It still took virtually the same amount of time to get the passengers their bags, but since most of that time was spent walking to baggage claim rather than standing and waiting, the perception was that the airline had become more efficient at reuniting its passengers with their luggage. The complaints quickly stopped. I always think about this when a group buy is delayed, and can't help but wonder if vendors could somehow apply this philosophy.

arsis_qpAppreciate you chiming in to inform people that this isn't just "a Drop thing". In regards to what you've suggested... We add buffer delays. We also have the internal date that we communicate to the contract manufacturer, and then an external date that we tell the customers. Some of our manufactures are resourceful and look at our site and then tell us "see, we have another 3 weeks to work with". etc. This is a game "to what degree is the Contract Manufacturer lying to us*" that we play every day, and we try to navigate it as best we can. Unfortunately, people notice (and complain about) delays much more than they are grateful of early shipments, so there is a large reporting bias that doesn't help the situation. *To be fair to them, they aren't intentionally lying to us, as much as they're being optimistic about their ability to deliver, and their ability to procure the raw materials from others, etc etc etc. It's hard to notice, but we've moved the majority of our products to an "in-stock" position for this very reason.

KevinSo if you hate delays as much as we do and want to make things perfect why wouldn’t you just announce a later delivery date then rushing for a deadline that was artificially set and is 1-2 months off? This seems like poor planning on a consistent basis according to all the group buy comments on here. Along side of that, people would probably be happier if things showed up earlier then expected. Instead you have a hand full of people who get it and a lot who are unhappy. Seems like you need to have a conversation about logistics, delivery timelines and the repercussions of failing to meet certain criteria by those you contract with as well.

Michael-BThen the factories who see those “adjusted” ship dates think they have more time to spare. Unfortunately, this is the way the game is played with supply chains that span from North America to Asia and some European countries. Italy and Spain for example are very laissez faire with their timelines, where China and Taiwan often promise best case scenario outcomes.

Michael-BI'm assuming you read my post here carefully, but let me give you an example: Us: "Hey there, when can we have 2000 Planck's made by?" Factory: "Yo dawg, it takes us 90 days to get all the parts, put together the kits, and ship them to you, so June 1st." Us: "Alright, lets do it, here's 50% cash up front and 50% on delivery." Factory: "Done." Us to the community: "Plancks will be shipping on July 15th." (Giving us 45 days of leeway, better to under promise and over deliver!) Us: "Hey, it's May 15th, are those keyboards almost done?" Factory: "Yeah dawg, they'll be done in 1 hot sec. June 1st delivery date is NP." Us: "Awesome." (Better not say anything to the community yet, we don't want to get their hopes up.) Us: "Hey, it's June 1st, what's the tracking on our shipment?" Factory: "Uh, yeah dawg, about those keyboards, we had a shortage of parts/labour/etc, we're gonna need another 30 days." Us: "R u KidDinG Me?!?! 15 days ago you said they'll be done in 1 hot sec!" Factory: "Yeah, sorry dawg." Us: "WTF... we had an agreement. our users are gonna be pissed, that affects our business." Factory: "Relax dawg, you still got 45 days, you told the community it would be ready for July 15th." Us: "How did you know that?" Factory: "We got Google in China." Us: "We're really upset about this, we had a deal, we have a contract, and you're not meeting those." Factory: "Go ahead and try to sue us." Us: "Very funny.. but maybe we'll just withhold the last 50% payment." Factory: "Fine, then we won't ship your products, and you'll see them on aliexpress next week." Us: "Next week? You said they're not done yet." Factory: "We can get them done quickly if we're motivated enough :)" Us: "ASDFK@L:!asdl;fdsafsdaf!@@!sadfdsf... Fine.. Please give me an update on July 1st and let me know their status." Factory: "Sounds good dawg. PEACE." Us: "It's July 1st, what's the new status?" Factory: "Sorry dawg, more delays, but I promise we'll have this done in four more weeks. It's not our fault, the PCB manufacturer had a fire on their assembly line and a dog ate the PCB schematics." Us: "Sigh, please just let me know when there's a tracking number for the shipment." Okay, so, obviously I've embellished the story considerably, and-- added some incongruent slang because I'm feeling spicy, but this is how it goes... I wish we were like Apple (the most valuable company on the planet) and we had volumes that let us pick the best contract manufacturers in Asia (i.e. Foxconn) and dictate whatever terms we wanted. The reality is, we aren't Apple, and we can't dictate terms. We're using small batch contract manufacturers who operate at a lower tier than the best of the best. That isn't to say they aren't good, and that they aren't professional, but they aren't at the same level and pedigree that most "mass branded consumer electronics companies" operate at. [There are many articles calling into question the practices of companies like Foxconn- does meeting the release date on your iphone justify forcing people to work 20 hours a day? That's an argument for another day]. I'll also reiterate from my earlier post that they're usually working out of the best of intentions, not maliciously, but the undertone of "take it or leave it" is always there. We have very little recourse when it comes to these contracts. The only lever that we have, is the promise of future business. There is effectively no legal remedies available to us, and threatening too withhold money/payments doesn't work due to the reasons demonstrated above. So, we at Drop have a tough time managing this- and I'm 100% not complaining about it, I just want people to know that the "answers to the problem that seem obvious" aren't as obvious as one would think. Any dates that we say publicly ultimately can be (and often are) read by the contract manufacturers who then use that to optimize their "acceptable lateness algorithm". Lastly, I'll reiterate, we're moving more and more of our product offerings to be in-stock. That doesn't mean that manufacturing delays won't exist, they just happen and are hidden from the consumer's view. This is how pretty much every other consumer-facing business operates; for a good reason! We're always thankful of the community's patience with delayed group buys. Anyways, time for another drink.

KevinI did not see the earlier conversation only the things I’ve read here. Obviously, I get it and can now see why things are the way they are. Trust me I understand waiting a few months since I waited 2 years to get into the beta at WayTools for their text blade. It just seems like manufacturing in Asia, where there are no repercussions for delays, is quite unfortunate. Anyway, glad to get the full story on what is going on with these manufacturers! Thanks, Michael

ec1991I think it’s just beating a dead horse at this point. Plenty of people have complained (including myself), no compensation or incentive has been added for the delay and it sounds like there is really no punishment on anyone who caused the delay. I am not trying to say that this is ok or making excuses for Drop and their choices but what can you do? Their choices to use the boutique manufacturers and such that they have had resulted in the delay and rather then own up, punish the guilty party or compensate customers for the time we just get handed the delay. It is what it is. I get it man, it sucks but there isn’t anything we can do but not buy their products or move on.

ec1991Considering it's a GB shipping across continents during a global pandemic, the delays have been either out of Drop's controls or to fix a quality issue, and we've had constant updates about the status I'm going to have a disagree. Most people are pretty patient about the whole situation which, let's be honest, you have to be with any GB. A few more days isn't going to kill you.

Out of curiosity did you order the pastel infinikey keycaps from the key company and then request a refund or exchange last week? On another note, I once tried remoting into my work computer and then into the shipping computer and didn't know my clipboard on the shipping computer wasn't being copied to my desktop at home. When there was a big shipment on planck's coming in early November it's not so hard to make the assumption that DROP was going to cover all pre-orders now and have it as an in-stock item. (Not really a problem for me, i know i signed up for Dec 28) From you're latest update I'm assuming it will be in-stock after the December shipment?

The november shipment we just received covered the earlier orders and there's like 30 units left over which we're holding for CS replacements, lost shipments, etc. I was incorrectly under the impression (and perhaps overly optimistic) that the order would be larger and cover the batch of latest orders as well.

Mattosaraus@elbert can maybe answer you on this. I'm not familiar with the exact details of each product and its specifications between revisions.

FunkyVishNo Planck here either and the tracking system has not received any kind of update in 8 days now. Last update was: Scanned into sack/container (on Nov 11, 10 AM) - In transit. Destination: Sweden (i.e. DHL) (Didn't expect to receive it at this date but a bit weird to see so few updates in the tracking system.)

Update: 2020-11-23, Still no updates in the tracking system. Update: 2020-11-25, Aftership (app) states that sender and/or transporter shall be contacted since they have not received any updates in 14 days. So @Kevin , do you have any input? Update: 2020-11-30, Package has reached Sweden so now I await the local delivery. Update: 2020-12-12, Package has now reached the final destination and I now have a fully working Planck!

Kevinit doesn't look tampered with (arrived sealed), and i've contacted customer support already: just wanted to make sure it was brought up! (and also disappointed to have to wait another few days for the keyboard, and afraid of ending up having to pay more in customs duties/"brokerage fees" than it costs for the keyboard itself)

DetectiveSocksyes it has LEDs, but when you complete the keyboard, the LEDs can't shine through the keyboard I believe. I still haven't received mine yet :(

dfmhcfhfIt'll be marked as an "RMA Replacement" so it's very unlikely you'll need to pay any brokerage/handling fees.

eddiexI can report the same as you. My package hasn't moved in the last two weeks and is stuck at the same state "Scanned into sack/container" at Now 11, 06:46 AM Here's hoping things will start to move soon... EDIT: I should note that I'm from Germany so it seems to be an issue with Europe as a whole

KevinHey guys, little update i received my package today. This was a shipping time of 19 days. The package arrived in good condition but I had to pay an extra 35 euro for custums(this sucks but thats just bad luck for me and I was already counting on it). I'm typing this message on my Planck right now, and i have to say I didnt imagine being this happy about a keyboard. Big thanks for the quick updates and answers, see you around.

KevinI received my planck yesterday (I'm in Spain). It's awesome!!! Thanks a lot @Kevin for all the transparency and updates during the delays. In case anyone is interested, I've used Zealios Zilents 67g, which perform outstandingly, specially compared to the red cherry my old keyboard has. I think I will need some time to get used to the ortholinear layout and the functions keys... I've created a wallpaper as a reference guide which is making it easier (I've attached it if you want to take a look at it). Just for reference, I've gone down from a bit over 100wpm to about 70wpm. Also, I've had to compile QMK from source in Windows 10 since I needed to include support for Spanish keys, I'll be glad to help if anyone needs help.

KevinMy order shipped on Seprtember 7th but it's been stuck with DHL, stationary, for the past two weeks. I've had other Drop order delivered in that time so I doubt there's something wrong with Drop itself. Is there a way you could open an inquiry with DHL to find and deliver my order? Thanks

KevinIt's been 3.5 weeks since my order supposedly shipped, with the wrong tracking number, on Nov 7, and I was assured it was sent to the right address but it hasn't shown up yet. I've had other packages shipped through fedex well after that arrive safely. I have also contacted Drop support for an update but it's been a few days now with no response. So, at what point is the package lost? When can I get a refund or a replacement? We're almost at the point where a whole other wave of orders, started after mine was supposed to arrive, is going to ship, this is getting ridiculous.

KevinAfter two years of enjoying this keyboard I am sad to rapport that the usb connector on my board is no more. I am 100% at fault wrt. it breaking (the keyboard fell down from a coffee table with the cable attached). However this error prone design, and what I expect is cost cutting, have now given me an expensive paper weight. I didn't expect this keyboard to live for ever, but this is the first time it have been dropped and I didn't expect it to break of this easily. It broke clean off.

thb im not even mad about it breaking off. Whats really annoying is the fact that there are no replacement PCB's. This really sucks because I really enjoyed this keyboard too bad the USB port design was so bad. I welcome advice or recommendations for either:
  • fixing current PCB
  • getting a replacement PCB
  • getting a different keyboard
