Are these like all the old 555/558 where you can open them up, remove a piece of tape, and they sound like the 595/598s?

ryan.yu.7370Actually, the foam mod does work on the 579s. I did it to my pair. It had much of the same effect. It takes some of the thump out of the bass, but sweetens up the sound a bit.

ryan.yu.7370I'd like to pull the tape from my HD579's and compare the sound to my HD599's. Even with the tape mod on my old HD558's I never felt the sound was the same as the HD598's as many people claimed. There were enough differences in the construction of the cups on those 2 headphones that they wouldn't sound the same. However, when I look at the builds of the HD579 and HD599 it seems like the only difference is the tape.

PeterMacI'd say it comes down to personal preference. Relative to many of my other headphones neither is all that great. And when you consider headphones like the HD6XX or HD58X the 579/599 aren't even that good a deal. I gave my 579s away and I almost never listen to my HD599s.
