KitesThere is no MIDI control available on this unit, however, you can obviously run direct into the unit from your MIDI controller if it has the appropriate outputs.
These units are designed for recording and tracking, not for control of other devices. Utilizing your software as a control for programming and then feeding into the board is an option as well. With multitrack recorders, the beauty of them is in their simplicity. Signal in, track, record, layer, overdub, repeat; it is a work horse, but not a trick pony.
Hope that was helpful and please feel free to post any other questions you may have.
I can still remember my first two experiences with a Tascam multitrack recorder...
I had an old, and I do mean old, Tascam 2 track that I would use to lay down tracks to tape. Yes, actual cassette tapes; then dub over them again and again using the same two tracks. My band in high school used to record on an 8-track Tascam that recorded to mini-disc. I may be dating myself a little hear, but my fondest memories of recording were with these two Tascam products. I literally learned by trial and error, during many late nights, how to record, mic an instrument and how to sound proof a room; all with these Tascams.
Nowadays we have much better devices, which allows for a wider range of recording options and the ability to track even better. When I saw this machine I was so excited, not just because of my nostalgia, but due to the sheer number of options in it.
I highly recommend everyone take a chance to look this piece over and see what it has to offer.
