The winner of the 2013 Fairplay À La Carte Award, among others, Love Letter is set in the wake of the Queen of Tempest’s arrest. Players must get their letters into Princess Annette’s hands while deflecting messages from competing suitors. Did we mention that she’s locked herself in the palace, and you have to rely on others to deliver your letters to her? Each turn, draw one card, play one card, and try to expose others to knock them out of the game.
Have a blast with this 2013 Spiel des Jahres “Game of the Year.” In Hanabi, Japanese for “fireworks,” players must work together to create the perfect fireworks show by placing cards on the table in the right order. Sounds easy, right? Not so much. The deck consists of five different card colors, numbered 1 to 5, and each player must hold his or her cards so they’re only visible to other players. Players give one another hints regarding which card to lay down in a collective effort to avoid errors and complete the colorful display before the cards run out.
Named the 2013 Golden Geek Award winner in both the “Best Card Game” and “Best Party Board Game” categories, Coup drops players into the chaos of an Italian city run by a weak, corrupt government. Starting with two coins and two influence (face-down character) cards, each player must manipulate his or her way to power with assassination attempts, foreign aid blocks, and visits to the treasury. The last player with an influence card wins the game—only the strongest family survives.
