A most excellent headphone amp!
I already owned a Topping A90D for a little over a year. Previous amps came from Schiit and Cavalli. The A90D took care of all my headphone amp needs until now, quite easily, as it packs a lot of wattage and has 4 levels of adjustable gain. But as I found out there are cans it simple can't be used with.
I purchased the Double Sided Modhouse Tungstens. As I quickly learned, it isn't always about wattage. Even on high gain and the volume set to 99, it was not enough. Ryan over at Modhouse, the creator/builder of the Tungstens told me any amp to drive them will need a lot of gain and a lot of voltage. And after testing many amps, for my budget and needs he recommended the Violectric V222, which is an improved V280, which is an excellent amp in its own right.
The V222 has 18db of gain (adjustable dip switches in the back) and 50volts so it can pretty much run any pair of cans, even though it only has 2.5watts. You can set the volume knob to high noon and it will be enough a lot of the time.
Now to the important thing how does it sound! The V222 sounds awesome. It punches deep, soars with clean highs. I didn't want in to go into work that night I so loved how it sounded after I first plugged it all up and started listening! Music included classical such as Finlandia, Tchaikovsky, and other assorted orchestral pieces. I then moved on to rock like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Moody Blues. Other music included Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Loreena Mckeenit and various movie sound tracks.
I am NOT a professional reviewer, I am told this is a warm sounding amp which works well with my SMSL VMV D1 DAC from 2019 and bought through Drop. I use the DAC's balanced outputs with my PC as the source through a USB connection. It played all my music through the Tungstens and made me so happy that that they may be my last cans for a long, long time! At $949, it's not an inexpensive amp, and almost 50% more than my Topping A90D. But compared to many other amps of similar quality it's cost is lower, and did I mention it's built like a tank!. Drop takes Affirm, so I was able to do this and I am really happy with my purchase! I think anyone who gets this headphone amp will be very happy, as for JUST under $1K I am pretty sure it beats out anything else for sound and versatility in driving the most difficult cans! It makes my cans sing as never before and I can't stress that enough! There are a lot of reviews out there that will go into the nitty gritty so I don't have to. To be honest those reviews are tons longer, but their verdict is the same as mine! Should you need a new headphone amp that has to drive difficult, sensitive, easy to drive headphones and its fits your budget, this should be on your short list! You won't be sorry!
