Product Description
Featuring a dedicated OPA134 op-amp and a high-performance LME49600 audio buffer, the Cayin C5 headphone amp promises a lush, musical output with detailed instrumentation and a fully realized soundstage. And if the range isn't quite to your liking, both the bass and the gain can be adjusted to your taste Read More
My Cayin amp started to cut the sound whenever the volume button is touched. Sometimes it cuts out on its own and wont turn back on until i move the knob again. Support from Cayin pretty much doesn't exist and I only had it for about a month. Buy with caution as I don't think these come with a valid warranty.
PeicilleLast update, my return was sent out (haven't received my refund from Massdrop yet) but I wanted to provide an update on the product before being sent out. I mentioned in my initial post that the sound started cutting out randomly. Well a week or so after my post, the amp just stopped working all together. Did not even turn on, I want to assume due to how cheaply made this is.
PeicilleGreat...I used my c5 for a few hours (5 tops) and today it started cutting out sound, it's sort of like a micro-stutter in the sound.... I thought it might be driver related but when I read your comment..... I guess I need to contact Massdrop about this, or how did you go about it? This is just brilliant, paid $157.49 as well as customs fees of more than 50 dollars ... I guess those 50 dollars are completely burnt but yeah... Great buy.
Snafu1Don't know how many times we've been through this. The C5 Amp you've linked on Amazon is $129.99. The DAC Amp, which is what is being offered in this drop, is $199 on Amazon.
Just wondering if anyone knows if these'll power anything like the DT 990's from Beyerdynamic at the 250 ohms mark? Have a few pairs of less taxing cans I plan on running off of this lil' beast but was just wondering if it's an all-rounder for anything that really requires a lot to drive, if anyone knows?
The output impedance is 32 milli Ohms(I read it on a forum from a Cayin representative).
I tested this AMP with Fostex T50RP MK3, AKG K7XX and B&O H6.
They all got plenty of power, even at low gain.
The H6(and most IEMs) would not get enough power if the AMP had 32 ohms output impedance.
I once plugged H6 into a SoundBlaster E1, which has 10ohms output impedance, and all I could hear was noise and almost no music. But the E1 powered K7XX just fine.
I'm new to this hobby and I was expecting to be surprised by this amp, but I could not tell the difference between odac+C5 and Pixel XL, other than louder volume. I wonder if Objective2 is better than C5.
Siva283There's a new Schiit Magni 3 that came out a few days ago. It has plenty of power and I don't think there's anything that can compete with it at 99$ price point. I was going to buy the Topping A30, but Magni 3 has even more power + it's output impedance is 0.3 ohms, so I'll buy it as soon as I get my 6XXs.
Siva283O2 and Cayin C5 are not at the same category. O2 is not as portable as Cayin C5. And O2 is just an AMP not including a DAC. C5 is designed to be used mobile but O2 is not.
If you need just an AMP for HD6XX there is no discussion, O2 will be the best choice at it's price point. And it's a really price-performance AMP I think, comparing with some pricey desktop AMPs around, still O2 is a very good option.
Well, mine arrived dead . Does not keep the charge at all. Only works whilst plugged in the charger or PC USB port . The moment you unplug from the charger it goes back to the tomb. Contacted Massdrop support and they issued me a full refund. I have to say C5 built feels like a proper cheap Chinese knock off. Nowhere near the quality of built of my FiiO E12 Mount Blanc. I opened C5 up and QC is schocking. Just look how PCB looks like.
Thanks for the links.
The older amp only model has Output Power: 800m W+800m W (32Ω)
THD:≤0.003% (1kHz) But this new dac/amp has Output Power: 300mW W+300mW (32Ω ) THD:≤0.02% (1kHz
I wonder why?
I have this DAC/amp and it is great! I use it with my Hifiman he560 headphones which take some juice to drive and it really gets the most out of them. Even on low gain I turn the volume between 7 an 8 and it's loud enough... and i like my music loud. It also works great with my Westone 30 IEMs. Don't hesitate if you're in the market, even if you have hard to drive planars like i do.
I can get Cayin C5 DAC/Amp and Dragonfly RED for the same price.
I understand that Cayin C5 means more power.
The cans I'm planning to use with one of the two DACs are:
Fostex TH-X00 Purple-heart and AKG K7XX.
Both *should be* relatively easy to drive & I like to listen to music at low to medium volume, almost never high.
Portability - I'm ok with both.
What matters to me is sound quality.
Any word of advise will be very much appreciated.
TommyChaBasically, the Dragonfly is designed for use with a computer and the Cayin with a phone. The Dragonfly will work with a phone but it's awkward to use and doesn't have it's own power source.
The Cayin will work fine with a computer but then you don't need the battery.
