I bought 4 of these a couple of years back when I was getting my boys into axe throwing. It’s a useful half-step between knife and axe but it had unexpected benefits for one of my boys. We have a permanent target set up on our yard near the woods. My eldest was a little shy and reserved. He invited some friends over and then threw 3 shovels and all of them stuck! The word spread and it gave him the opening he needed to make friends in junior high. :)

As you can see, it is possible to toss this thing with enough force to bury it a couple of inches into pine planking... :)

Not sure that's going to do much to advance mankind or us as a species, but since both of those items seem to be stalled right now (or possibly rolling down hill with nobody driving), why not?

RayFBwaaahahaha!! Three points for making milk shoot out of my nose!! I have to stop checking MD while eating my lunch. it's too funny, Ray, because I literally just saw Society rolling backwards down my street without a driver! Look: there she goes! Just missed that lippy kid on his trike and took out Mrs.Jones begonias! Damn, it's gaining speed! Is that a MAGA sticker on its bumper…?
20+ years US Army experience speaking here... You 'need' a small shovel. My entire career we were issued an 'E' tool (short for entrenching); every US Army and Marine is issued one, its a standard part of their TA50 issue. Our E tool folds though, and has a triangular handle and comes in a light green heavy duty plastic/rubbery case. This model by Cold Steel (great value and excellent gear/company) appears to be designed primarily after the Russian Army (or Spetznaz) shovel, or maybe an older style US military shovel.
For $20+ shipping you can't beat this deal with a stick. If I didn't already own a couple E tools, and a small assortment of other small shovels, I'd pick one of these up. Found it on Amazon for $26. Would prefer to buy from Massdrop, even if it were a couple bucks more and had to wait a little longer to receive it.
I really like that Massdrop is carrying/selling a wide array of ColdSteel products!
First time I've been called a shill. If true, that's pretty insulting, not sure what's going on here; but for the record, I don't represent anyone or sell anything, I have no relationship with ColdSteel or any other company that sells products. I thought I made it pretty clear I prefer the E-tool, and don't intend to join this drop. If anyone reads my other comments, they will quickly find that I've been occasionally critical, where deserved and very fair/honest about my opinions on many products sold here on Massdrop.
"Shill- A shill, also called a plant or a stooge, is a person who publicly helps or gives credibility to a person or organization without disclosing that they have a close relationship with the person or organization."
ConsumerAdvocateThanks to all of you that have :thumbs up: my comment about NOT being a shill. Someday I'll be dead, the only thing I'll die with is my integrity. Please join me at: www.patreon.com/Patriot1

My, $.02: Two thing I would want that this does not have: 1. a lateral handle at the end, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but makes a huge difference when using a tiny shovel, 2. a hinge in the handle. With a hinge you can fold the shovel and it makes it that much smaller in a backpack or truck tote.

well, that's military stuff, made to outlast at least dozen of grunts. Commercial products usually are not.

Fair enough. You get what you pay for. I think a standard issue eTool is twice the price, so your point it taken. This thing looks like a blister-breaker to me.

VibraniumBunsI dont see on BladeHQ that it includes shipping for that price, when I looked just now it sells for $19.95+6.99 shipping.
Either way, you were looking at the shovel that does NOT include the sheath. This drop includes the sheath. The model on blade HQ that includes the sheath costs $29.95+6.99 shipping, so a full $10 more than on Massdrop.

How does a Cold Steel product not have the associated video in the description? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOaEjJz-6jg
I can't tell you how many hours I've burned watching these things. They're the best part of supporting the company.

This is a steal at $19 w/ sheath. Nothing better for canoe camping, truck camping, or foraging in the woods. Especially awesome for preparing and then repairing campfire sites. Also great for working in planting beds while kneeling and mucking around at the beach. It's heavy duty, and the steel is thick enough that you can sharpen an edge to use as a chopper (don't expect miracles here, but it's great for roots and small stuff that would otherwise damage your knife edge). For snow only, there are much better options. A D-handle square point shovel is much more efficient and ergonomic (but bulkier--that's the tradeoff). Full disclosure: I have never needed to fight off a flock (gaggle? clowder? gam?) of mall ninjas using this shovel so cannot comment on its utility in this regard.
