The ESS 6-inch AMT speakers are part of a lineup of audiophile-grade floorstanding speakers that contain the ESS Heil AMT (Air Motion Transformer). The original air motion transformer was created by noted German physicist Oskar Heil, and his patent was licensed exclusively to ESS Laboratories for production in the US Read More
1979-1980 I recall walking into my favorite audio store and listened to the ESS Heil for the 1st time.
40 some years later I can still sense the excitement of hearing them...
1399 is a great price, the ESS site lists them at 1800.
Now I’m thinking how a nice 300B amp could sound with these!
BareThose were special days for audiophiles! There were so many companies just killin' it! Dahlquist, Heil, Celestion, Great American Sound, Phase Linear, Nakamichi, Tandberg, Revox ...Difference was, if you did your research, worked a bunch of extra shifts and saved your cash, you could afford to buy top of the line equipment...something not possible now days.
Consumer Reports tested some ESS speakers years and years ago. They were a group of "expensive" loudspeakers--the most expensive speakers Consumer Reports has ever tested, around $600 a pair in the late 70s or maybe around 1981. I'm sure they were a different model. Still, they tied for first place. The frequency response of the tweeters, from about 800 hz on up was almost a flat line, nearly as flat as an amplifier. I don't think it went quite as deep in the bass as the other 1st place speaker. These tweeters cost about $220 each. If I could afford these, I would buy them. I just can't afford them right now.
Note: ESS makes the tweeters themselves, in the US.
I would love to listen and try these buy wouldn't be able to remotely justify the price. I'll keep keeping an eye out for ESS and Ohm Walsh speakers on craigslist.
For the price tag on these, I feel like I'm seeing to really iffy construction. The plastic(?) case on the front of the tweeters looks like it's been broken and someone tried to putty it back together with limited success. The vent slot (I assume) at the bottom looks like the bit slipped on the right side and it's uneven. And they went through all the trouble with the nice finish and grills, but all I can see in the one image is those giant, hardware store standard hex bolts in the back.
I bet they sound levels more amazing than anything I have though.

But the customer support of Massdrop is a joke, I tried to asking for packing dimensions and shipping weight for fill in the cargo service online form, after several emails, nobody could give me an answer, once said no information could offer, once said it weight 720oz, once said only could know after the group buy, very funny answer.
By the way, I am Wilmer
