Product Description
A classic IEM that’s been refined over decades, the Etymotic ER4 gets its latest update in the ER4SR: a model that delivers accurate, reference-quality sound with excellent noise isolation—up to 42 dB of reduction, to be exact. The ER4SR features precision-matched and custom-tuned balanced armature drivers inside sleek anodized aluminum housings, along with a detachable 5-foot-long cable that ends in a 3.5-millimeter gold-plated stereo plug Read More
I've had the same pair of ER-4S IEMs for about 10 years, and have used them - no joke - almost every day since I first received them in almost every type of situation, and that says a lot - their build quality is tremendous. I absolutely love these headphones, they are excellent for critical listening. They have a very neutral, balanced sound, they are clean, clear, crisp, tight, not overly bright, not overly bassy, these headphones were designed to reproduce sound that is very close to what the human ear naturally hears.
With this said, these are not the kind of headphones you jam out with IMO. These are for digging out details and exploring sounds, examining a recording, sucking out all the details of your music, as opposed to have a more visceral/emotional experience.
These IEMs, in my opinion, should be used with a higher quality, dedicated headphone amp, ideally something tube (the LittleDot MkIII comes to mind), not solid-state, as the tube amp will give them a slightly smoother more "musical" sound.
I have the Campfire Audio Lyra ii which is very "musical" sounding, and in my opinion is better suited to having an emotional experience with the music you love. The Etymotics and the Lyra's, or another compirable pair of IEMs that have more of a "I'm gonna rock out" sound are the perfect combination of gear - when you want it, you can put in your ER4S and really appreciate the recording process and details in your music - and with a second pair of IEMs or headphones that have more of an emotional voice, you can switch over and jam out when the mood strikes.
I would recommend these headphones to anybody who wants to really examine their music. If you're someone who ends up getting these, keep in mind that you can have custom ear molds made - this REALLy takes these IEMs to the next level.
The "timid" bump between the ER-4XR vs the ER-4SR is, to me, a huge difference actually (I auditioned both before purchase). Anyone interested in this caliber of IEM is going to be sensitive to small differences. So I really do think that experiences with the older models are simply not helpful towards making a purchase decision, sorry.
For anyone who is interested in getting these. You really need to make sure the fit and signature is to your liking! This is one of product that sounded alright but never actually appeared on my rotation. The sound was clean, linear, with fast bass if the seal is reached. The limitation of single BA will be shown. These are not for the outdoor, the deep insertion might cause problem out in the public. You kinda have to use the triple flange tips in order to get the best sonic experience. And for those who is not familiar with the deep insertion, it's gonna be way too 'Intimate' for newcomers. These might be a decent option for enthusiastic & someone who looks for musical tools, not for average consumers that don't know what they're getting. Especially considering Massdrop's return policy. I strongly suggest trying them out if possible(Amazon etc) before making the decision. A friendly reminder from someone who couldn't use these as a daily driver.
The grey foam ear tips are super comfortable for deep seal insertion, u need to find the right size via trial and error. There are excellent 3rd party ear tips available too. I found the triple flange tips too small (the biggest one included in the set). Response is intentionally flat, I use the +3db on my FiiO DAC aps when I need extra umph. What kind of person would use these outdoors?
I have the XR version (ER4XR) and to me it sounds excellent with classical music, I toggle on the moderate bass boost for rock EDM and the like. Haven't tried the SR.
Early March 2020, Drop sold these for USD 199. The drop on March 24, 2020 was USD 250; just like the drop today (April 16, 2020). Why the price increase?
In the past the price would get lower after a certain number of buyers had bought the product of that particular drop. This no longer seem to be the case. At least not with the last few drops of the Etymotic ER4SR/XR.
It's truly unfortunate how under-discussed Etymotic is in the headphone community. The Etymotic ER4P was my first audiophile headphone purchase 11 years ago, and I STILL use it to this day. I bought the ER4XR 6 months ago when it was newly-released, and it became my new favourite headphone. The small bass boost really made a difference in filling out music, and the cable is much softer and pliable than the old models, which make it more comfortable to wear, and there's less noise when it brushes against your clothes.
I have a few pairs of open-backed headphones, and I like them, but these are a must for portability and travel— wearing these on a plane is amazing, even successfully blocking out crying babies next to you! And while they're very flat and neutral in their response, that also means they're very easy to EQ.
But that being said, this isn't a good deal and I'd recommend getting them off Amazon.
I've read both post when they were posted and clearly haven't paid enough attention to the description. ER-4S certainly is not a ER-4SE. Thanks for pointing it out.
I am really dissapointed about this drop, Amazon has the same at $278 with 2 days delivery so you don't have to wait until October, c'mon Massdrop you can do better than this!
How on earth can they claim the ER4XR have a so called 'extended response' and then have a range that cuts off at –16 kHz ??
Also, how can you claim they are 'reference' with so much potential audio information missing. This baffles me ? Anyone?
It's refreshing to see someone that actually understands words. Like can comprehend whole sentences and the ideas of those sentences. My problem that I run into at times is I come across people that LITERALLY do not understand the meaning of something I say. I tell them "this is bad, because etc....", and they start talking about properties of a different topic. Totally devoid of any rationale or relation to what I am saying.
So thank you for actually responding to precisely what I was saying. I usually don't see many folks do that.
The whole discussion isn't formatted for discussing here for sure, sorry about making it this unwieldly, but all I ever try to do when talking online is AT LEAST make myself perfectly clear, so there is no confusion. But as you can see, it requires insane amount of elaboration.
EDIT: One thing I gotta say about mixing with higher bit-rates. 100% absolutely agree, you need higher bit-depths/bit-rates. It makes the editing process so much easier so you're not running into potential clipping issues, so for professional use, I fully support the need and idea that using higher quality formats is not a luxury, or something unneeded, you 100% MUST use higher level formats for easier mastering/mixing.
JJayJJ:) I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to make your points so clearly. I need to read them again a few times. Ive had a similar conversation with a few people of late so there must be something here I need to take on board & learn!
These days its not easy to debate or even discuss anything because one needs to express ones points and then to listen and respond..and to not only try to defend your points to your dying breath but to be open to what the other person is trying to communicate. Even amongst friends its rare for one to be able to finish a single sentence before the other person has stopped talking !! :D No-one seems to want to listen anymore but maybe with the sate of the world this shouldn' be a surprise?
Im happy with my audio related beliefs & experiences as you can tell! and will happily try to explain why but Im also equally happy to drop them immediately if someone points out how they are incorrect. (I hope anyway!)
What I find difficult i think is that for me [or anyone] my belief or understanding or what my actual experience is, is as true to me as anything can be. I don't understand the strong needs of people for my experiences to be provable so thank you for taking the time to explain your points. It helps a lot. I hope or at least I aspire that I can accept people and their views completely as they themselves hold them but it sure is tricky when people hold different views :) Thanks aagin
