Based in Obrigheim, Germany, GermanMAESTRO has a long tradition of building high-quality headphones for recording engineers and music lovers alike. Take the GMP 400 and 450 Pro: two models that deliver durability for the long haul and an excellent listening experience in every detail Read More
The original phone, QP400, made by MB Quart in the early 90s was some of the best headphone of its time. Later on German Maestro acquired MB Quart's headphone business and started making these under the name GMP400, which is the one you're seeing right now. These feel flimsy compared to the original, and you can tell they cheaped out on many areas. The cable is much thinner, the pads are not as plush and the plastics don't feel as high quality as the original model. Yes they're still made in Germany, but the quality as gone down to such a degree that you'll be better off buying hifiman.
A friend of mine bought these, said they sound too bright and brought them over to my house to compare with my QP400. Apart from the looks there is nothing similar, even the sound is different. Way different. Connected to the same amp, the GMP sounds much brighter than the QP. Whether or not due to insufficient burn-in is anyone's guess. But if there's one thing the two models share its the horrendous yokes. They don't extend far enough to cover my head, and the headphone, even fully extended, will feel small for many people. HD600/650, in comparison, is much more comfortable to wear. I don't think they can beat the QP400 sound quality wise, but in the comfort department they are the better one hands down.
UOIMI have no doubt MassDrop would love to offer more brands. Audeze is a unique company, and how they distribute their cans means it wouldn't be easy. I would be surprised of they talked to them about it and would probably try again. I'm not sure what "jurks" are, but I hardly think the HD6XX is unpopular, with several thousand sold. The tech and wood going into the LCD-4 means it might cost them 2 thousand to just manufacture it and cover the years of R&D that went into just making it. You'll never see that wood version of it below $3000 used. I want great expensive stuff cheap too but you have to be realistic here.
HiFiMan products from my experience are a disgrace. Mine have ALL fell apart or sound had become distorted in less than 1-6 months. All thru Amazon uK.
re-400 left ear broke apart within 6 months
he-400s sound became distorted at 60% above volume in 3 weeks
he-400s bought again as loved the sound when it worked... and I'm SURE they gave me the exact same pair back as the volume still became distorted at 60% volume and above. I know it wasn't my gear as I tried with many sources and my friend didn't have the same issues with his.
mattc50101Yeah they got that history, and I believe it, but I can say that the 4XX does not look or feel cheap. I've had mine for nearly 6 months and I use it regularly--it's not falling apart and it sounds fine... maybe because Massdrop was involved?
