Perhaps best known for its 24-hour Airman tool watch, Glycine has been producing timepieces since 1914. This version of the Airman—decked out in black, gunmetal, and silver—allows you to track multiple time zones thanks to the bidirectional rotating bezel and GMT hand Read More
Lol, he wasn't comparing products. He was letting people know that you can buy this exact watch, minus the carbon band for $100 cheaper. I'm sure many would appreciate knowing they can save $100 on carbon band they might not like.
That’s a fairly slick looking watch for this price.
My 2 questions would be if it has good lume
and if that black finish holds up somewhat at least. Not interested enough to research it.
TragiqueFor a good lume go on Seiko/Orient or tritium...
I have a Glycine with white lume... poor luminescence. I doubt the black lume would be any better...
PVD is known as a none lasting treatment
TragiqueI have a GL0153, the lume sucks compared to Seiko, Zelos, etc. But it does have lume but every watch I've seen with black colored lume is never as good as regular lume, I hope they figure out how to make the black lume shine like regular lume because the watch looks super cool
"Oscillating weight, rhodium-coated rotor, decorated 'Côtes de Genève', and engraved with an airplane"
Translation: machined, vertical lines (put their essentially to cover up less attractive machine marks [scratches] portions of the movement pick up throughout the manufacturing process).
Done well, the finish can be very attractive. Done cheap and dirty, it's hardly worth the effort. Evidently MD just wants us to find out which method Glycine opted for, after you've purchased the watch--otherwise they would have included a damn photo of it.
I looked around and found this shot, but can't guarantee it's exactly the same movement and case back these models come with:
Wait a second... Did I just buy almost this same watch yesterday, but smaller, with acrylic instead of sapphire, less detailed dial, inferior crown, and solid caseback for $100 more????
What is the cancelation / return process like over here on Drop these days?
The only thing that would make me feel better is if the hour hand on these GMTs make two revolutions per day IE; not true 24hour except for the GMT hand... Unlike the purist, if I understand that correctly?
Well I personally love a one-per-day 24 movement, and my current favorite is an old Hamilton 4992B pocketwatch as I said which itself came originally from modifying older movements... But compared to that either Glycine is an improvement in some areas and a compromise in others...
There are SO many models, but The DC4 seems alright. The Base 22 in particular looks like it might be my favorite in the right configuration. The Chief occupies an interesting sweet spot though and since this Airman is only available in GMT I think I'm at least happy to pass here and likely give Chief a try.
And for perspective since I kinda like trolling around here Im fairly new to watches. Only a few years of really wearing and caring about them. So if I have to wear and then sell The Chief to figure out I dont like it, well then so be it. There might even be a good discount on it if it turns out really bad so ask here how Im liking it if you missed this drop some months in the future.
One messed up thing is the bracelet looks like it has screw links but I noticed an arrow but thought why would it be push pin links, after trying to unscrew the links a couple times over my 1st day of owning a GL0153(bought at ashford.com for $360), I try my newly bought pin pusher and what do you know, push pins machined to look like screw pins. For $360 I don't care but truly any watch over $400 should use screw pins
