The DX50 is a great instance of a forward thinking and community oriented Digital Audio Player (DAP). The early models of the DX50 won respect from the audiophile community due to its bit perfect sound and high build quality. That said, the first firmware releases for the DX50 were… quite buggy. The good news is that the audio was so good that people decided to stand by the DX50 and provide feedback to iBasso on how to improve their software. The current release is quite stable and the DX50 is currently rated at 5 stars all around by top reviewers on Head-Fi.
The DAC inside the DX50 is a Wolfson WM8740, which gives the DX50 its impressive 24-bit rate and 192 kHz sampling rate. A note on the internal amp, it is a portable amp so it will have a tough time with high impedance headphones, but it is more than capable of handling anything that is designed to be portable. One of the killer features of the DX50 include it's Line Out and Headphone Out ports, which really distinguish it from other audio players in it's class. One last impressive detail of the DX50 is the three function gain switch on the bottom that allows you to choose between High, Low, AND Medium.
Great imaging, a top notch soundstage that keeps improving every time they release a firmware update, solid bass, midrange and treble are all marks of the DX50. This DAP is superb at instrument separation, so you can listen for your favorite part of the song with impressive clarity. Interestingly enough, the sound does change dramatically with each firmware update, so do take the time to experiment with which one you prefer the best. Or you can always just check the Head-Fi Thread that reviews each firmware update here.
