Nice to see all the fine writing instruments and accessories making their way to "buy" status on MD. The lowest price this drop is $25.99USD, with a pack of paper - which is no deal. I can buy the same blotter locally for $25 CAD, and a paper pack for $9 CAD any day of the week. I don't see much a savings here, nor how the $37USD MSRP was calculated. I will be passing on this drop, and issue this caveat emptor.

I buy A3 blotting paper and cut them to size but I do not say they are refills for the blotter. If I buy A3 90g paper, trim it to A4, punch holes on it I cannot say that I bought refills for an A4 bloc. My point was that, as you also says, J.Herbin sells precut refills. The ones offered are quite usefull to carry inside A5 notebooks. Best regards.

But you just have to cut it to fit the rocker. It is more cost effective to buy these blotter paper packs than to buy the precut strips. I've heard that the printing could affect how well the paper blots, but most discussion boards have people arguing in favor of buying these packs.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially right before the weekend. But just moment ago, we were notified by our warehouse of a fulfillment mistake made during receiving the J.Herbin white blotter sheets. Our warehouse staff did not correctly identified the bundle package these paper came in, and mistakenly put each bundle of 5 as a single unit.
This means that many members will be getting 5 times more paper than intended, but it also means we are unable to ship out orders for even more members.
Immediately after realizing this problem, we placed another order for the white blotter sheets with our vendor, and these are being rush shipped to us. We will make sure to have the remaining orders ship out as quickly as possible. We sincerely, apologize for the extended delay that is affecting most of the members participating in this drop, and we would like to offer a 5 dollars partial refund for the inconvenience. The partial refund will be processed shortly, and should settled into your payment account within 2 business days.
And if you are one of the luck members that is getting extra paper in the shipment, feel free to keep them.
Thanks for your patience and expect an update from us on 2/13 or sooner.

nelsonI am one of the lucky few to receive five times more paper. That's fifty sheets of blotting paper. Now, I guess I'll need two gallons of ink and three lifetimes to spend it. :)

KAPS1M0Yep, you came up on this one. Please don't drop them all in any large body of water, you might cause a tidal shift.

The J. Herbin Rocker-Blotter combo is quality stuff. Surprisingly I don't see it offered by many folks online - perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. Of those who sell it, the combo seems to cost significantly more than what's being offered here (at the lowest drop price but including shipping to USA).
Sure, there are other companies that make rockers and blotting paper, but these particular J. Herbin products are top notch. Others have mentioned how they've been using the same rocker (and blotter) for 6 months or more, even with heavy use.
The better the paper (for fountain pens), the more ink resistant. The more ink resistant the longer the dry time. The longer the dry time the more likely some will rub off onto the facing page of your journal or your hand or your shirt or whatever. Using a rocker and blotter will assure the ink is dry right away. Using one of high quality means it will take all the use you can throw at it.
Better retailers sell these, but the prices (unless bundled into another order) are usually $5 to $10 more than the lowest price being offered here. This is a good deal assuming you understand the overall Massdrop experience.
I've been using more ink resistant paper, lately. I'll throw a sheet of blotter paper between pages if I have to jot and dash or if I have to write higher on the page immediately after writing at the bottom of the page (and risk smearing). Having a rocker at the ready eliminates this issue.
If you're looking for a high quality rocker and blotter combo at a very competitive price (for the US), this is a good option to consider.
As usual, I hope this helps.
Cheers.

Wonder if they made it? I dropped out with less than 4 hours to go (due to finances mostly) and they still had only 16 people (35 needed for lowest price) at that time. But I see the drop ended so they didn't extend. Wonder if they got 19 people in that short window? First drop I've seen where they didn't get the needed number for the lowest price. And didn't extend the drop if that didn't happen.

GonzoTGreatGoulet has had a J Herbin blotter and paper set for ages now, and they routinely provide a nice discount when you buy them together, $37 + shipping (it will vary, so I don't list the shipping). The difference between Goulet and Massdrop is that Goulet ships within 1 business day of placing an order. Usually, it's worth it to purchase from them. They take their customer service seriously, unlike Massdrop.

> Yep, that was a pretty unfortunate situation we had to iron out.
You have written this in the past tense as though that drop has been fulfilled; it has not. In fact, we've had no updates about the drop for about 3 weeks now. Ironing out a situation generally involves actually resolving issues, not just offering a partial refund and then ignoring the whole mess.
> However, it's totally unrelated to this drop and we've put measures in place to prevent a repeat.
How is it unrelated to this drop? It's the same vendor and the same middleman.
What measures have been put in place? I see this phrase a lot on MD, mostly explaining away the failings MD has had in acquiring products and shipping them to customers on a reasonable schedule, but nothing concrete has ever been mentioned as to what actual actions ahve been taken to ensure these things don't happen again.
Further, why are these measures piecemeal? I've been on probably half a dozen drops that have had their ship date delayed due to 'vendor error' or 'shipper error' (never 'MD error'), and each time we're promised that it won't happen again with that vendor. What are the core issues that cause vendors to be unable to ship on time for drops?
> I have confirmed that these items are definitely in stock and ready to ship from the vendor.
This implies that Massdrop doesn't usually ensure that the vendor is capable of fulfilling orders, which interests me greatly. Can you lay out what the typical communication process is between Massdrop and a vendor during the setup and execution of a new drop?
tastycatHi @tastycat -- Sorry for the delayed reply, I'm just catching up from being on the road.
Updates: Indeed, I apologize for the lack of updates. Three weeks is too long. Sometimes Customer Support sends emails individually that are not posted in Discussion when only part of the group is affected, and I thought affected members had received emails in the meantime.
Unrelated: These calligraphy sets are not normally well-stocked in the US, whereas most J. Herbin products that we've run drops for are more common and re-stocked regularly. These sets had to be specially ordered from France just for the group.
Measures: We make great efforts to be transparent whenever possible, and go into pretty specific detail about the inner workings of logistics - to a greater degree than most. I don't mean to be vague here, but we also want to be sensitive to the fact that vendors may be making special arrangements for the Massdrop community that they don't want to broadcast widely.
We confirm with vendors before every single drop that sufficient quantities of each SKU will be available when the drop ends. However, sometimes "confirmed" isn't as concrete as we are led to believe, for any number of reasons that are beyond our control; efforts that appear to be piecemeal are often us refining something that we thought would solve the problem but didn't, and we are just one of the two parties who must agree on how to handle situations like this.
The measures that have been put in place here have taken the confirmation from being a computer inventory count to a physical inventory count, with greater assurances than were previously able to be made that stock available when the drop ends matches what was quoted.
I hope the information that I've been able to provide here gives you greater understanding of the process, and confidence that future drops will continue to run smoother than the last. Massdrop is an evolving platform, and I genuinely appreciate your candid feedback. Thank you for taking the time to give constructive criticism that benefits other members and pushes us to improve.

I don't use fountain pens but I do use rubber stamps and ink to create cards. Anyone use one of these to absorb extra pigment ink when rubber stamping?

sallybethrI haven't tried it, but I wouldn't see why not, _especially_ if the stamp ink is water-based as most (all?) fountain pen inks are.
It's basically just a sheet of very porous paper attached to a rocking mechanism. Sometimes fountain pens can flow a lot of excess ink, and I've never had a problem soaking it all up with the paper. The rocker helps get an even downward press to prevent smearing and make the job faster, though you could just press down with the blotter in a pinch. As long as you don't "wiggle" the paper as you're pressing it, I haven't had any smearing on the page, so it should preserve the fine details of your stamp unless there is literally a puddle of ink.
Hope this helps a little. tl;dr: if the stamp ink is water-based, it'll work; if it isn't, it'll probably still work.

having recently rediscovered the joy of writing with fountain pens, and the joy of writing itself, this is going to be a necessary and delightfully archaic accessory for me.

I don't own the wooden rocker but I do have the J. Herbin blotting paper and it's wonderful. I just place a sheet over what I wrote (after waiting a few seconds) and close my notebook or journal and press. However I'm sure using the rocker is more convenient (and cool).
jwink1971Thanks @rdominick and @jwink1971! This product is new to Massdrop, so we really appreciate you sharing these personal experiences with other members.
It's especially cool that you chose to do so regardless of being participants in the drop, thanks for taking the time to pass along info for the benefit of the community!

I got one of these for Christmas, and it was my best present this year. Blotting the last few lines is an excellent ritual to finish what you're writing. Blotter paper lasts a long time; 30 refills is quite a bit.

Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor for the J. Herbin Rocker Blotter Bundle and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.
As soon as the group's order is ready at the vendor's location, they will send the bulk shipment to our warehouse in New Jersey where our warehouse team will break it up into individual orders and ship them. The current estimated ship date from our warehouse is 5/27.
We will keep the group updated throughout the fulfillment process. You can expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 5/19.

This is a great blotter, but the screw on mine is a bit loose. I got mine through JetPens half a decade ago and had to change the paper only once. After that the handle doesn't stay tight, but it's still a fantastic rocker blotter.
