Steel isn't great. Sure it can sharpen easy, so maybe it's good if you're trying to learn free hand. But it won't stay sharp particularly long.

I appreciate Massdrop trying to get an inexpensive knife out there, but this one isn't worth the money at any price due to the steel. First, other sites have this knife listed as having 3Cr13, which I think may have been the original steel. The new listings for this and the other knives in the series(Starter, Manifold, Lifter, Filter) are now listed at 4Cr14. However, both of these steels are not really worth having. Kershaw's own 8Cr13MOV is a lot better, and can be had on similar knives at similar prices. Honestly there's just no reason to spend almost $20 on this thing and wait on it instead of going to (insert almost any big box store here including WM) and buying a $20 knife with better steel. I'm not a steel snob, but there is a minimum that's worth my money, and this steel doesn't quite make it. For the record, I have a Kershaw Oso Sweet in 8Cr13MOV, it takes a great edge on my sharpener, and has decent edge retention. Also, I only paid $20 for it and that was at a small non-big-box retail store.
Here's a review of the Manifold, with some excellent points and commentary that applies to the Starter as well: http://www.everydaycommentary.com/2015/11/kershaw-manifold-review.html

It looks pretty cheap, how's the quality?

Well let's put it in perspective. On BladeHQ there are a LOT of knives under $20 or even under $15 that have better steels. I can recommend at least <$20 CRKT knives: Pazoda, Drifter, Squid. Obviously shipping adds cost, but a quick trip to many stores will get you a better knife than the Starter. Inexpensive and cheap are not always the same; you can get inexpensive, which is just low cost, or you can get cheap, which is low cost AND low quality.

This is the exact knife that I carry everyday. Despite what I have read here, the quality of the steel is fine. I am kind of hard on the knife, and it will hold it's own. It will sharpen to a razor edge, and stay sharp. It is a little on the heavy side, but I would prefer that to the cheap light weight feel. It has been a good durable unit. There is one issue though. If you take care of it right away it will not be an issue later. There are a few small torx screws ( 3 or 4) like size 10 or 15. When I got my first one I did not check the tightness of these screws, and lost one. I am on my second one of the same knife now. If you remove the screws one at a time, and loc-tite them it will lock everything in place. I did that about a year ago, and all is good to this day. Oh, and if it is opening "sluggish" your tension is set too tight. It is a simple 3 second adjustment. Mine makes a satisfying "snap" when it opens. For the money this one is a win.

Tenbux1970Where and how is tension adjusted? Is a tool needed, what tool? Thanks.

richismoOn the top end where the blade pivots there is a circle with 5 small indendatipns. In the center of them is a torx bit hole. The size is a t10 or a t15. If you loosen or tighten that it will make the blade easier or harder to open. It is just basically a tension screw.

I've owned this knife. Pretty much the worst knife I've ever had. CONS: Far too heavy, awful steel, tip-down only, rounded jimping, weird finish (IMO). PROS: It's like looking into the ribcage of a charcoal black skeleton.

For the total price listed here (including US shipping charges) you can find that knife at Amazon from a whole bunch of sources. That certainly does not bode for a good deal. Moreover, if I buy from Amazon, l can get my money back, while potentially receiving it the very next day via a Prime account.
