hey guys received my 6xx and i'm trying them out..... they dont have any lower bass extension... or bass in general for that matter. Also, i don't sense any detail or soundstage. Do these just require a ton of burn in or something? I got them to replace my 558's and honestly the 558's sound better in every regard so far.... Should i maybe look towards dekoni pads to try and buff up the lower end????
What are you using to power the 6XX??
These really need an amp that can throw at least 7v peak to peak to shine with an impedance 330 ohms. If you don’t get a decent amp, you are better off to stay with your HD558. Get at least an O2 or Magni3, these a still low budget amps but they will make your HD6xx shine.
Which amp/dac combo should I get? Budget of 200$ max. Should I opt for the Magni Modi 3, Fulla 2 or the O2 Odac?
I think for 200$ your best deal is the Magni3/Modi2. The Fulla is 50% cheaper and far less powerful. The O2/Odac is very good but it’s price is proably a little more than 200$, closer to 300$ if I recall for the combo DAC and Amp. The Massdrop O2/SDAC combo was a great deal at 149$, but it’s not currently offered. Maybe Massdrop will bring it back in the near future, I don’t know.
I forgot to add... im using a schiit magni2/modi2.
Then stick with what you have, Magni2/Modi2 is a great little combo, sorry.
I agree, 7v is a good mark to go for with the HD6XX. However just keep in mind that it needs 7v at the impedance peak of 480 ohms. His Magni2/Modi2 will be more than sufficient to drive these headphones to any listening volume and/or genre, although for $200 the Aune will probably be better sounding due to the higher output impedance.
Which Aune? X1s or X7? Which higher impedance? The 10 ohms output of the Aune or the 330 ohms relative average impedance of the headphones? Anyway I would like to compare live The Magni3, O2 and X1s. They are different, the Magni3 is more powered than the other two, but in real life with real music at real moderate to higher volumes it would be interesting to see the comparison.
All Aune's output 10 ohms I believe, any is fine although the logical choice is the X7, since the OP already has the Modi as DAC. 330 ohms is the impedance at 1khz, 480 ohms is the impedance at 90 hz. Haven't used the amps by themselves, but comparing the Schiit stack and the O* stack, the former is the more dynamic one, the latter is clearer and more neutral. I own an O2+ODAC but honestly I don't like either since they both have trade-offs.
Pete i remembered there's a gain switch on the back of my amp and i flipped that and that seemed to make a difference as far as some of the detail and clarity goes. Still no bass, headphones seem to roll off HARD, eliminating a lot of low frequencies commonly used in rap, electronic, pop, and even rock as the bass drum doesn't come through very well. Clarity and detail is still nowhere near my etymonic pt4's.
I still don't think i'm getting the most out of these headphones.... Is it possible that the magni 2 that i have doesn't output enough, even at high gain, to drive these headphones to their limit? How does the ohms rating and wattage relate to voltage required to drive these headphones? Is it possible that the magni line just can't drive these phones to properly take advantage of their quality?
Magni 2 - 260mW RMS at 300 ohms. Gain is 3db or 14db.
Schiit now makes the Magni 3, which has 430 mW RMS at 300 ohms. Gain is 6db or 17db
Side note: Not really a fan of how the gain changes how pronounced certain elements are. I keep increasing the volume to try and bring up the background but its volume doesn't increase nearly as much as the main voice or main element in the song. It seems on low gain, everything is raised in unison when i crank the volume.
