Hey Everyone, thanks for coming to our announcement for the Vast, Massdrop’s gaming monitor. If you read through the monitor sections of any gaming forum, you’ll find a consistent request: Give me the most desirable resolution (used to be 2560x1440, now it’s 3440x1440, once GFX cards catch up it’ll go to 4k I’m sure), with a refresh rate at 100hz+, and a response time below 4ms (g2g). There are other important specifications of course (none of that matters if the color reproduction is garbage or you’ve got massive back-light bleed), but assuming everything else follows the accepted standards, this is the holy trinity, and price points hover around the $1000 mark. Why do they cost so much? Monopoly. LG and Samsung own a patent on IPS technology, and they’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars telling the american market that this is the only panel technology for high-end displays. Electronics retailers buy into this monopoly, because it works well for all parties involved. The manufacturers come out with the new desirable version every year, spends millions marketing them, the retailers have contracts committing them to a certain number of units, and the product sells itself. In short, everyone is comfortable making money, and they don’t want to rock the IPS boat, so why would they utilize another panel technology to solve the problems of the gaming community? They wouldn’t, that’s why we exist. On a sourcing trip last year we met with a number of monitor manufacturers and panel makers. AU Optronics was among those we spoke to and in our meeting they told us about a new kind of panel called VA. Now, it’s not new in the sense of technology that’s never been seen before, but a new refinement on VA technology that allows for 100% sRGB coverage, while hitting our targets for refresh rate, resolution, and response time. Additionally, VA panels have greater contrast than any panel type including IPS, which is valuable if you’re tired of backlight bleed in a dark room. If you google VA panels, you’ll find nearly none in the american market, and you’ll find generally limited information, or information from dubious sources. Why? Goes back to the monopoly point, retailers want a product that’s easy to sell, not a product that’s the best. If I’m Newegg and I know LG is going to spend $50mm advertising their products on american television this year, and AU Optronics is going to spend $0, those LG’s are going to be a lot easier to sell. We’re not banking on marketing spend, we’re banking on the quality + performance, and the enthusiast community not falling for advertising. From the specs to the industrial design, we’re incredibly proud of the Vast, and we hope gamers enjoy it. But while we designed it for gamers, at the introductory $549.99 shipped, we hope anyone that uses a computer all day can enjoy the immersive visual experience that comes from this combination of resolution, refresh rate, response time, sRGB coverage, and 1800R curve. Thanks for your interest in this product, I’ll be around the discussion to answer questions over the next couple days and I’ll make a new post prior to the launch with the most popular questions + answers.

WillJOLED is making OLED panels and AUO is making mini LED panels. Will Massdrop be offering an OLED and/or mini LED version of this monitor, that is equal to or better than PA32UCX?

WillHello! I contacted Massdrop's support to see if there is a firmware update but they couldn't answer. Are you the producer of the Vast screen? Do you know if and where we can find firmware update? I'm asking because I recently started using the freesync but I get artifacts on the screen.

Updated 1/23: Hi Everyone, The Massdrop Vast Curved Gaming Monitor has arrived at the warehouse and the team is wrapping up quality control checks. The monitors are starting to ship and we expect all orders to leave the warehouse by the end of this week (January 26). We’re looking forward to everyone receiving the first production of the Massdrop Vast Curved Gaming Monitor! Updated 1/16: Hi Everyone, We have an update on the Massdrop Vast Gaming Monitor. The shipment of monitors experienced a delay while in transit to our warehouse, and we now expect the monitors to arrive early next week. After receiving and quality control checks, we estimate that the monitors will ship out by the end of next week (January 26). The monitors were shipped via vessel and our team informed us that the delays were due to changing weather and ocean patterns. We know you’re likely just as disappointed as we are, and we’re sorry for this delay. We’re doing what we can to get the monitors shipped to everyone as quickly as possible. We’ll provide an update next week with the status of the shipment.
Updated 1/5: Hi Everyone, We have an update on the Massdrop Vast Curved Gaming Monitor. The monitors are in transit to our warehouse in New Jersey, and once they arrive they will go through the receiving and quality control check process. We wanted to give everyone a heads up that the timeline will be tight, and we’ll be cutting it close for all units to ship on 1/18. We’re pretty confident that the monitors will start shipping on 1/18, however we estimate that the shipment will span over a few days. We are still aiming to have all units ship on 1/18, and we’re working with the warehouse to prioritize this. We apologize for this potential slight delay, and we’ll provide an update on 1/18 with the current shipping status.

Yup, someone else above said the same thing and I was able to confirm. Just a weird name for that feature making it seem mysterious.

Yeah. Me too! Did you ever figure out how to change the monitor DPI?
Hey Everyone, posting to let you know this drop will be extended to the end of the month to provide more time for reviewers (most notably Linus) to share their content.
Our order is already in the production queue, this extension will have no impact on the ship date.
Because of some intricacies around payment processor rules, we need to process payments for all the purchases. This normally happens at the end of the drop, so it will remove your ability to cancel directly from your transactions page. You still have the ability to cancel any time between now and the end of the drop, but you'll need to reach out to support via your transactions page to handle the request.
Thanks for your patience through these extensions and your continued interest in the Vast! The timer for this drop will change later today.
Check back around 5pm PST today for some gameplay footage (pubg and rocket league) we captured last night per the requests in this discussion.

Hi Everyone,
The Massdrop Vast Curved Gaming Monitor is making its way through production! Check out the video below to see the partially assembled monitors on an automated line. The monitors are being powered up to allow the LCD panels to burn-in. After the monitors progress slowly through this process, each panel is inspected one last time for defects.

We’re on track to meet our estimated ship date of January 18, and we’ll update everyone in January with the status of the shipment.

Update March 20: Hi all - Good news: with over 1k members getting in on the Vast drops and the positive feedback we've received so far, we've been able to work out a plan to produce more Vast monitors and bring the price down to $549.99 for this drop. Thanks again for helping make the Vast a success!
Updated March 6: We’re excited to announce that more units of the Vast monitor are available! We will likely be able to open up a couple of limited quantity drops over the next few months.
The first of these runs will launch today (Mar. 7), with 300 units. The estimated ship date for this production run is July 19.
———-

Hi all -
We’re excited to be able to make the Vast monitor available again and to get it into some more members’ hands! The initial run was very well received (see the stats in this post below, and reviews further down in the discussion), and has seen thousands of requests after the drop ended.
We ended up with 150 extra monitors in inventory from the first drop. Rather than hold those units (and to give an equal chance for people to get them), we’re going to give 150 random members in this drop those monitors early (~10-20 days post drop). We’ll let you know via email on or before March 3rd if you’re one of the 150.
Thanks!
EDIT (2/8 1pm PT): There was an issue with the drop showing the total # purchased (from last drop and this drop), as we normally do with re-launches. This has now been fixed. The number of Vast monitors purchased in the first drop was 743.

------

Now that the drop is over and all of the units have been dispatched, we wanted to provide a post-drop update. The goal of this update is to give more transparency on the success and failure rates on this drop, along with clarity on what we're doing to resolve any issues that came up in this drop.  We're planning on rolling this process out across a majority of our Massdrop Made products and collaborations in the future.

Issue resolution:
• Power issues + Dead Pixels -   Based on current member emails, there does not seem to be a systematic issue on this drop. We'll be taking a closer look at the problematic monitors when they're sent back in so we can assess them for any core issues.  Members who experienced issues in this bucket are either being issued refunds or replacements. • Shipping damage issues - Members who experienced issues in this bucket are either being issued refunds or replacements.  While there will always be a small amount of shipping related issues, we are looking at options to improve packaging to lower this rate. • Lopsided - Some units have a piece of metal on the stand attachment that is causing a lopsided monitor.  There is a simple, physical fix to force the plastic past this metal (here are details:  https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-vast-curved-gaming-monitor/talk/1959143).  For the next run, we are working on the material production process to prevent this issue.
As always, if you have experienced an issue with this drop and haven't already written in, please contact our support team via the transactions page so we can help you out.
Thanks for helping to make the Vast a success!

Is there a reason that you still didn't post an actual update, but rather replied midway down a comment chain? This didn't go out as an email to the buyers of the drop, like updates usually do - I had to grumpily come look to see if there was any news.

sphanleyHey - yes, the official update was just emailed out. As you said, it should have been emailed to everyone (about a week ago) like normal massdrop made drops, but it fell through our process.
I followed up with our team to get the full update and get it sent out, and to help make sure this delayed update doesn’t happen again. Sorry again for the delayed communication.

You're right, I do sound like I'm shilling, but only to someone who hasn't read up on what I've posted. I've recommended people different types of setups not even having to do with this monitor, most notably that they should have two monitors, non ultrawide if they like to game, one for high refresh rates, and one for IPS color accuracy. I just don't see this as a bad deal or any other cheaper alternative like the non curved LG ultrawides with lower resolution or higher refresh rates. This one just seems like the best all rounded monitor for the price that anyone looking for an ultrawide would be a fool not to at least consider.

Ugh, Freesync :( I would imagine there are a lot more Nvidia GPU owners out there than AMD GPU owners. You're cutting your potential customer base by more than 50%.

minijedimasterNot sure what you're on about. I merely stated that, rather than the mistaken belief you present as fact, the average user is not going to go out and buy a new GPU just to get a monitor with g-sync over freesync or vice-versa. Simply put it's not mainstream enough yet and as of right now the price is too high. It will remain for now a niche market for those enthusiasts willing to pay the extra cash.
