Product Description
The Crux is our second collaboration with Ferrum Forge Knife Works, a two-man operation out of San Diego known for producing small batches of custom knives. For this second drop, we’re offering the handle in brand-new colors with the option to get it engraved with some clever designs Read More
Hey everyone,
We hope everyone is enjoying these, and wanted to provide some additional context for the conversation around the pocket clips on the Crux (which is the same design as used on Falcon).
We’ve been reading comments in the Falcon discussion and monitoring the support requests for that drop closely, and have found the total number of clip-related claims is under 0.5% for 2500+ knives delivered.
While the data doesn’t show us there is a widespread problem with the design, we recognize that members were looking for a bit more flexibility.
So, based on your feedback, we’ll be taking the following actions:
1) Introduce a modified clip design on upcoming releases of Ferrum Forge Falcon, Crux, and any future models that are designed to be compatible with this clip style beginning in 2018.
2) Make replacement clips available for purchase, also beginning in early 2018. We hope to sell them for $20 or less, and to keep them in stock if there’s continued interest.
3) Provide a $5 credit toward the purchase of a replacement clip for anyone who purchased a Falcon or Crux with original clip design. Credits will be given automatically to any members who join the first drop for replacement clips, in the form of a refund issued when the drop ends.
Thanks to everyone for helping to make a great knife even better, we’ll send an email to everyone who’s purchased a Crux when the updated clips are available. Here's a rough preview and comparison of the old/new designs:
JonasHeinemanDid this new clip design ever get dropped/built? I have a crux that I EDC and the clip upgrade would make it even better if you still have any more available.
The stigma is based on past performance being bad quality. Only in the past few years have the Chinese knives become high quality products. I would say with certainty that these companies were taught by American companies. Spyderco for example produce many of their budget folders in China and taught them that producing high quality knives no matter where they come from will sell well in the U.S.. These companies took a chance and started making much better quality knives. Much to their surprise the products they made started selling well. YouTube knife reviewers started giving them high marks, even the cheap knives such as Ganzo and Sanrenmu started making better knives for very little money. I have a few of those cheap Chinese knives and I will tell you that they are dam good for twice the price. The present stigma is based on the dislike of the the clone issue. It is terrible that it is happening but it is par for the course. The Chinese companies copy everything that they can get their hands on. This should have been taken into account when the companies started making knives there. As far as I am concerned this has made many of the American companies give you a lot more for you money. I am more than happy to buy American even if there is a small difference in quality. Ferrum Forge which is a red white and blue company had to resort to using a Chinese company to produce the Massdrop knives.
Anyone know how hard they are running the S35VN? I'm a bit frustrated with so many production knife companies running it soft (58-59) compared with how well it could perform at a higher Rockwell-C (60-61).
The knifes you guys make look great... The only negative I can see would be:
1. Why put the "Massdrop" logo on the the knife?
Makes is look cheap and doesn't do anything for the ascetics. At the very least, make the logo WAY smaller. That logo is YUUGE!
Hey everyone, it's #FerrumFriday and the Crux is back!
The Crux was originally released in June of 2017 as our second collaboration with Ferrum Forge. We've been really pleased to watch as this model has gained quite a following and become a favorite EDC for a lot of people. It's become part of my regular rotation because I think it's a great balance of being easy to carry and beefy enough for serious work, with almost 3.5" of blade length ground from 4mm stock.
Elliot Williamson, the knifemaker/engineer behind all the Ferrum Forge designs, is known for the bold milling designs on his custom and midtech knives, so we wanted to incorporate some of his creative design work into what we are doing here with our collaborations. We've also seen that blue and bronze have been popular colors on other FFKW knives, so Elliot's brother Chris, the mad chemist behind their stunning custom finishes, designed these anodization treatments and helped us to make this one available in some new community-favorite colors.
Just a few basic housekeeping notes on the mechanics of the drop:
* Members who join the drop before 10:00pm on April 30th will see their orders processed and cards charged on April 30th. The drop will remain active until 10:00pm on May 31st, and anyone who joins in May will see their orders processed when the drop ends at the end of May or if quantities run out.
* Our order has already been placed with WE Knife, so the delivery time is shorter than many other collaboration drops - our Estimated Ship Date is June 28th.
* Because the order has already been placed, quantities are limited to 1425 units (see style distribution below). There were approximately 1180 Crux sold in earlier drops, so the total number showing on the page could reach as high as 2605 on this drop.
* All knives will have serial numbers that begin with a designation for the pattern and color. They will be randomly distributed (not based on the order in which you join the drop) from the following sequences:
Original / Gray: OG1201 to 1500
Original / Blue: OL0001 to 0150
Original / Bronze: OZ0001 to 0150
Juggernaut / Gray: JG0001 to 0200
Juggernaut / Blue: JL0001 to 0125
Juggernaut / Bronze: JZ0001 to 0125
Saber / Gray: SG0001 to 0200
Saber / Blue: SL0001 to 0125
Saber / Bronze: SZ0001 to 0125
It's always fun working with the team at FFKW, and it's particularly exciting when we see there's enough interest in an existing model to bring it back with some new variations on the original. Thank you to the members who joined the first Crux drop for making this second offering possible, and of course to everyone who is checking this out for the first time!
Carry On -- Jonas
Hey everyone,
Great news: The WE Knife team finished production ahead of schedule. They also shipped and cleared customs quickly, so they've already arrived at our warehouse nearly two months ahead of schedule!
So, we'll be closing this drop tonight at 10pm PT, and our team will work on shipping orders out ASAP to everyone who has already joined this drop. We've moved up our Estimated Ship Date up by one month (to the end of May), but we think it will happen much sooner - we still have to do the QC and process a fairly large order.
Once we have shipped out all orders to members who have already joined, we'll re-launch this drop and make the remaining units available for immediate shipment.
Thanks for making it possible, and for your patience as we move through the fulfillment process.
scumdropGreat job S.D I really like the splatter effect you used on a few of them. Did you get to see any of the videos from Blade Show 2018? Man am I going to be one broke knife nut when the next wave of knives hit the Dealers!😯😰😲 😎
Like I said in the falcon drop, if you had held a WE knives knife, you'd realize that Chinese made knives can be just as good as American counterparts for less if they use the same standards.
But, whatever. Don't join because 'muh China'. They've obviously built a very solid reputation in 3 years by doing nothing at all.
I was excited until I saw it wasn't being made by Ferrum Forge but by We in China. They'll be a billion of these out there for $70 bucks in a few months. Oh, except there won't be an "M' on them...
I didn't call you a desk jockey. I implied anyone into this fake knife is. People have posted pictures already of the blade stained. And it was described as heavy but it's titanium... GTFO stop trolling my opinion which turned out to be true.
edit: omg you are upthumbing your own replies! thats why it shows three replies all with thumbs up and you only have one point! hahahah pathetic. If that is the sort of integrity you propose to bring to the table with ALPHA BLADE REVIEWS...
Nothing screams "cheap knife" like "Massdrop" etched onto the blade. I'm certainly not going to pay full price for a knife (that's not otherwise meaningfully different from Sebenza ripoffs from other brands) that advertises a discount retailer. The Massdrop logo makes this knife exactly as valuable to me as a free ballpoint pen from the bank. in both cases, despite the utility remaining, the class is completely gone.
So all titanium handle folders with a frame lock are sebenza rip-offs . You are the worst kind of knife person... go buy a buck 110 and crawl back in your box. Oh wait... the 110 has a logo on the blade never mind
Gunmonkey1974Yes, I'm the worst kind of knife person: an informed one. Yes, Sebenza clones are a huge category of folding knives in the current knife market. Pretty much any titanium folder with an Integrated Sebenza Lock is a Sebenza clone. Some are more blatant copies than others. It's pretty obvious in the case of this FF offering.
No offense to WE Knife, but I dont see spending the money on a chinese knife of this price range. I would gladly pay for a real Ferrum Forge, but these are not.
Its not in the same league as people like CRK and other US knifemakers. If WE is what we are calling quality, then it's time for me to drop out of this discussion.
KetelOneI am not sure anyone was comparing it to the quality of CRK (which is 4X the price) or even FF for that matter, they are just saying WE makes some seriously good products for the money. I got in on this drop and am excited to see the end product but I did not get in on the second. I want to see the end results before I double down.
