Good $100 spent
Initial impressions: Did not use the stock cable but paired with Tripowin Zonie cable. Source: iPone 6s. Good build quality though the female connectors are not entirely ‘fixed’ in the housings which may be intentional. No defects with well fitted seams (with rounded edges, you can just feel them with your finger nail) on the housing without any sharp edges. There seem to be two small holes next to were the nozzle extrudes from the housing (possibly bass ports). The faceplates are unpolished with the M logo and H2O etched into them covered with a layer of acrylic, looks quite refined. Getting the right fit might require a few tries with different tips as the stems are rather short (but then my other ‘main’ set is a Etymotic which are inserted very deep). Due to the short stems even with an ok fit sound isolation is only so so and they do not sit very securely in my ears. Bass is there with good quality but this is not a set for bass-heads. Mids are good and both male and female vocals (from Kenny Rodgers to Raelynn to Maria Carey) come through nicely. Backing vocals, harmonies and double/triple tracking is distinguishable (All the things that shine, Toto). Treble is nice clear and defined, flute (which I played for decades) is natural with nice attack all the way into third octave and violins in classical pieces come through nicely (Mozart first flute concerto). Hihats and cymbals are distinct with good attack & definition and at least ok if not better shimmer (Invisible Touch, Phil Collins big band; Every Little Thing …, The Police). Lots of detail, I heard every instrument in “I know you are out there somewhere” by the Moody Blues and synth profiles are distinct in Toto songs. Instrument reproduction is good from lean (Dreamland, Alexis French) to crowded pieces (Running out of time, Toto & classical orchestra pieces). The 1/16s on bass synth on Suburbia, Pet Shop Boys are distinct (they devolve in a droning mess on ‘cheap’ headphones). I’m not sure why but while listening to various tracks during the writing of this review I got the distinct impression that these especially shine with instumental synthesizer music (Tangerine Dream, Kitaro, Jean-Michel Jarre). Of note here is that Estrella (Kitaro) which is VERY treble heavy in places is rather piercing, while this IS the intentional it’s rather shrill … on the other hand Konjiki (which is orchestral with some synth parts) is very enjoyable and the flute, high notes on the strings and synths on Sozo do sound natural, so the (possible) emphasis in the high treble is only really apparent under certain conditions. Of note is that the connection to the cable plugs is a bit ‘wrigley’ (which may be a feature) and i wonder about the long-levity of the wires from the female connector to the board/drivers in the earpieces, on the other hand this did give the longer male plugs on the Zonie cable a bit to move around for the best fit in my ears so tradeoffs as always. As long as you don’t require lots of empasis on base tracks recommended.
