Shozy Alien v.2 is being developed! I'd really, really be interested in a drop as well. Would it be possible to work a similar deal, an introductory price when it becomes available? That would be awesome!

Like to add listened with the AKG 812 and Fostex Th 900 and the HiFiMan H500. No external amp used and the Shozy Alien drove these to very loud levels at least to my ears. Sounds great by itself doesn't seem to need an external amp. Also on HeadFi there's a way to make it shuffle the music which I'm using now, pressing the sound level down with 3 long presses makes it shuffle your songs. I'm loving this player, ran it Side by side playing the same recordings on the A&K 240 still listening to the Alien it just sounds right to my ears.

Wow, Is Alien that good to compare to AK240 in sound quality and if so, what marks in SQ do you give Alien to Ak240?

Received mine yesterday from my APO forwarding service. Very cool looking loaded up some Flac albums and listened with the Massdrop AKG K7XX, mellow sounds able to drive the AKG's to some decent levels. Simple controls, great if you just start and listen to a whole album at a time. Great midrange for the vocals and on the treble it's not so bright but I can hear the guitars being strummed. I got the silver one and I like it. Will try it hooked to the Fostex HPV1 tube amp, but right now by itself it's sounds really good. Happy with this drop.

I'm obviously incredibly stupid, but it seems to me there should be some sort of user manual. I am able to playback music but certain files seem lost or corrupted. Does the microSD card need to be formated before being used?
I'd ask on their forums or support but that seems to be non-existent.

Are you using only FLAC or WAV files? The hierarchy needs to be : folders/files; the alien can't read folders within folders. No SDXC http://www.head-fi.org/t/733349/a-little-about-the-shozy-alien just search this thread for more info

Ok I'm in for better SQ, will A/B with my A&K 240. And as I usually just play albums from beginning to end, don't really need a visual screen. Will give a listen.

That's what I'd like to know also. I much prefer control wheel color-matched and icons NOT painted white. Bright white symbols and white Shozy name cheapens the overall value of great design IMO.

Although I'm not necessarily arguing against your complaints, I have to say that your comments are rather unproductive and unnecessary. I mean you're effectively just regurgitating the specs and complaining about them, when most people can see from the picture that there is no screen on this DAP and have decided to move on without sharing a pointless rant. To me, it kind of mirrors a low income worker walking into a Porsche dealership just to complain about how high the car prices are. I can't help but think "lol...really?"

Some people value sound quality over bells and whistles. Although I share your frustration, the fact that this DAP is said to sound better than the AK120 Titan (a DAP that is 8.5x massdrop's price) makes this a massive bargain. Additionally, you can just convert your MP3 files to WAV
Link to the AK120 comparison - http://www.wheninmanila.com/shozy-alien-portable-music-player-where-hi-fi-meets-simplicity/
I have to say though, I'm quite jealous of the fact that even 10 hours of battery life is unacceptable to you. I wish I had that much time to listen to my library lol.

From what I understand there are three iterations of Shozy Alien. The first has silver control ring on all black, silver and grey colors. That control ring and the power button were one level with the body, control symbols not painted, headphones socket is silver metal. Supposedly it was a pre-production/early run units. http://www.headfonia.com/canjam-europe-2014-picture-report/8/
The second generation had control ring raised a bit and power button slightly sunken in the body with the control ring matched in color, control symbols not painted, headphones socket color matched. The third iteration is similar to the second except control symbols on the ring painted white and headphones socket moved inside the aluminum body. From the pictures on Massdrop it looks like we getting the third version.

I'd normally badger anyone who recommends converting from lossy to lossless, but in this case I'd agree, you can easily convert your mp3s to FLAC or WAV without problem. There are several available tools: foobar2k has a great one if you're using Windows, and I'm pretty sure ffmpeg can do it if you're on GNU/Linux.
Or just have the media be encoded in FLAC from whatever source.

No screen makes this extremely niche. Peeked into headfi forums on this not really believing it had no screen and had the 'zealots' explain that lack of screen was actually a big advantage. Quite entertaining. As bonus entertainment, I saw 8 hour battery, no MP3 capability and loud volume at start of song causing almost certain instances of ear damage. I love flac but most of my collection is still high rate mp3 which is plenty good, even for audiophiles. . For a company to ignore this segment of society is amusing. They removed the screen and still couldn't do better than 8 hours??? Fiio is already pushing it with their pathetic ten hours. I stopped using my x5 for that reason as well. I read the review from the link above, wow. They should call this the 'masochist'.

MicroSD cards.
I haven't seen anyone test cards above 32gb, but without a screen, most users aren't looking to figure out how to navigate through too many folders for listening

I am sure that it sounds great, but no screen kills the deal for me. I like the fact of having only FLAC and WAV, but I cannot imagine trying to navigate through my songs with this, what a nightmare. It reminds me of the old awful Apple Shuffle that people used to use. I will stick with my Hisoundaudio Studio V 3rd Anniversary for my audiophile needs.

This player is for folks who appreciate high quality sound... mp3 lovers do not apply. Saying that if you want to you can play mp3 on it when upconverted to WAV/FLAC in JRiver, mediamonkey, etc. a simple couple of minutes process. On the sound... it will literally kill most of the DAPs twice or triple its cost.

Sure. I also use tubes in my preamps both headphone and full size... this is 100 years old tech. Sounds good to me. But that's a moot point, obviously. :) Alien is for people who could use its interface and sacrifice some convenience for the sound quality.

I must say the build quality is quite good, however. It is just the lack of screen, controls that would take some time to get used to (but not frustrating to use), and the incidental FLAC playing issue. Think about a poor man's Tera Player.
I fully agree with brainwave's statement about the sound - Shozy Alien is a nice DAP in terms of its sound, and definitely able to compete with DAPs a few times it's price.

Shozy Alien owner here. This is a very interesting DAP - it provides outstanding music quality at its price, but the navigation is not very convenient given the lack of screen. Despite the inconvenience, I still had to buy it after demoing. Yes - the sound is that good. I wouldn't recommend putting a large SD card into it - a 4GB or 8GB card will do. It starts playing in 10-15 seconds after you press the middle button (a bit slow startup), but then is smooth once it starts playing. Pressing the middle button again would turn off the player - not pause. You navigate through the music through the previous and next button (it starts playing music in the root folder of the SD card, one by one, and always starts from the first song, at a rather high volume (don't put your earphones in before you can adjust the volume ...) To navigate through folders, long press the previous and next button. You will gradually come to realize that you should only bring your favourite music using this DAP - because you have to go through songs in the folder one by one, click after click. Don't expect to drive huge headphones with it - may be portable headphones under 100 ohm, but IEMs are more suitable. Good dynamics and bass, average soundstage, clear but not very detailed. A rather enjoyable sound. Drives some of my IEMs better than Fiio X5. No battery indicator - will stop playing once the battery is depleted. Cannot play a few of my FLACs - not sure why (encoding problem?), but this seldom happens. Only supports 24/96 at most. Good for listeners who are looking for good sound quality at an affordable price, if you don't mind about the navigation problem.

This is important, do note that MP3 files are not supported by the Alien. It's pretty similar to a Shuffle - throw music on it in the order you want it to be played in and you're good to go.

Since this has no screen and you say:
"Once you’re all set, select your song from the five-button control center, a small and at first confusing interface that takes some tinkering until you get the hang of it."
Could you give us a bit more info on how you select stuff. I'm generally a "Play Album" or "Play playlist/artist" kind of guy. I certainly don't want to be fiddling around searching for a song every 5 minutes!
And seriously, 8 hours of playtime ... we're not living in the 90's anymore.
On the other hand I like the idea of up a removable SD.
