Warning to anyone looking to buy this. The one in the pics I posted previously is the oem version and it is not durable at all. It sounds good for what it is but in less than a week of occasional real world use it failed. I was even consciously over careful with it but any small bump or just slight pressure at an angle can cause the pins to get ripped off the pcb. I have tried a lot of these dongles and most tend to fail but this one failed quicker than all of them while being more careful with this than any of them.
I ended up buying that JCALLY one so thought I would share some pics for anyone interested in comparing. Everything I see seems to show they are the same thing and even at the price sold here I imagine the majority of people will be happy. I know if I paid $25 and got this without knowing there was a sub $9 one available I wouldn't be complaining. The sound is actually much better than expected. The Apple one can get louder on an Apple device or hooked to a pc or phone that recognizes it and allows use of "hardware volume" control within an app. The problem with the Apple one is that it will sacrifice bass and mids in order to increase the volume making hard to drive stuff sound too bright and painful at times. This JCALLY or A&D adapter does not make that sacrifice. It seems to prioritize a balanced more natural sound over max volume giving it some impressive bass performance. What I am about to say is not even an exaggeration and surprised me just as much as it may surprise some of you but this JCALLY or A&D adapter is actually usable and enjoyable with a pair of Sundaras. The Apple one losses so much bass and body to the mids it makes the Sundaras unpleasant but somehow this tiny thing plays them like I expect them to sound. The form factor worries me but as far as performance this may be my favorite sub $25 one at the moment. I think everyone who participated in this drop will be very pleased.
Remember when Realtek DACs were just crappy onboards built into your motherboard and not pushed as a quality solution to a portable dac? Pepridge farm remembers.
