I can't seem to enjoy the sound signature of these at all, very very intense treble with not really much else. Even using someone here's EQ posted (even though it does help) doesn't really make them listenable for me. I've also tried putting in dampening foam inserts to try and physically tweak the sound, but the treble just permeates right through

Just got these today. Can definitely say they could have fit issues for some people. It's a bit of a weird, loose fit, but it's not unpleasant - it's light enough that it kinda just floats around your head. Pads aren't amazing, and if they were thicker, it would resolve fit issues for a lot of people, but somehow it manages to seal around my ears.
Don't really have much to say about the sound yet, other than at first listen, it seems completely unoffensive. That could be good or bad, depending on the person. So far I think they're a nice complement to my Sony MDR-Z7.
Also, the wood cups are fuckin' beautiful.
Edit: Tried these with ZMF Eikon Lambskin pads, and it makes the fit way more secure. Though I think suede pads might be better sound-wise, as the lambskin seems to scoop out the mids/lower treble a bit. Also, something that doesn't separate the driver quite as far from your ear might help vocals not sound as distant, so it might be a combination of things working to make the mids sound recessed, there. Nice punchy bass, though - and treble remains non-fatiguing.
It's really a shame that the stock pads aren't just.. thicker. The material is really nice, but they're just way too thin to create a good seal.
Edit: (Perforated) Suede pads turns these into a bright, sibilant mess, so definitely don't bother with those.

bdingI just got my ZMF Auteur fenestrated lambskin pads and they were a perfect fit. A little pricey at $70, but worth it for these headphones if you need a pad swap.

Well, those didn't last long. Luckily, I found an open box pair on Amazon for $409 (this drop was $550). Honestly expecting them to be the wrong model.

I have these. I wouldn't advise getting unless you are prepared to:
a) EQ
b) Bend the band inward (or have a very wide head)
They are unique sounding and can be enjoyable with the right amount of the above.

Most of us were poor in college. It gets better. Trust me when I tell you that it gets better despite how grim life looks now. So when you graduate and get a boss job you can buy your first high end headphone and know you earned it. (Fellow biochem undergrad). High end audio is a bad hobby for a college student.

The W5000 are beautiful and unique, with three notable flaws. The attached cable is frustrating and needs replacing. The pads are thin for the shape of the cups, making comfort hard to achieve. Finally, the headband is oddly shaped, requiring bending to fit most people's heads effectively. However, with all that said, they are still worth the cost of entry, as their sound signature is intense, dramatic and utterly unique. I've enjoyed my time with them greatly, and with the aforementioned alterations in place, these will have a home in my collection for a long time to come.

As far as I am aware, this is not a Drop special, just the standard W5000, which is over a decade old. All of the recent new releases from Audio-Technica are detachable, using the A2DC connector standard. They have also dramatically changed the wing design for more flex points and better comfort. The W5000 are an amazing headphone, but are certainly relics of a past era by modern standards.

Audio Technica really needs to update their headphone cables to the detachable variety, it's the reason I own just the ATH-R70x.
