Sound quality is very good, it's plug and play for iOS and I use my apple watch for volume control. I am going to buy a few more for family members.

I have only had it for a day and I must say I think it sounds really good paired with my Massdrop Plus IEMs. I bought it for the native pairing with IOS without having to buy other adapters. I have a Iphone 6plus and am interested in seeing whether I can live without a headphone jack. ie: do I purchase another iphone or go another direction to get a headphone jack. Well, after listening for several hours, I have to say that the Audirect sounds miles better than the std jack on the 6 plus. Much better depth, detail, and power. The unit is tiny and basically weighs nothing and can fit in the Massdrop plus IEM case if I arrange things carefully. I did have to reinsert the lightning connector one time, but that is the only dropout I had. I did not seem to be bothered by the volume steps. Also, since it is connected all of inches from my phone, I just used the volume control on the phone. From my perspective, these are highly recommended. I hope this means there will be more such devices produced in the future since it appears like all phones are now trending towards dropping their jacks.

The DAC sounds very good, especially for it size and price. The only imperfection - volume control. It would be good to have more steps there, though you still can regulate volume smoother from a phone.

rshlyapakcontrolling the volume though the phone means with this device means using the software volume, so you're actually compressing the bitrate and losing much of the edge in terms of sound quality this device gives...

My favorite external DAC
I bought a few of these devices to test out because phones without headphone jacks are an unfortunate reality. im going to stick with phones with headphone jacks. that said, this thing is the best of the bunch I tested. It sounds great—the ess Sabre is the best dac chipset IMO. And it is fairly small so when it is connected to your phone it isn’t that different than if you were using headphones. it has an analog feeling switch for volume control and that is what makes this thing great. yeah, recommend.

The DAC has very good sound with my Aurvana Trio IEM's a huge improvement over playing with just iPhone 6S. Although not the most stable connection, cuts in and out more often than not.... it also seems to just stop playback on it own. I now find myself not even using it because it cuts out more than it plays. Too bad because i really like the audio performance. A Not Buy recommendation

This DAC is easily on par with my Dragonfly Black and Fiio BTR3. The sound and amplification are both good and a noticeable improvement over the phone output. While the Dragonfly has no controls, and the BTR3 is Bluetooth only with phones (USB works with computers), the Beam has volume, track, and play/pause controls. They work but are sensitive and take a little getting used to. Finicky is a good word to describe them. I'd read a lot of comments that said it doesn't always connect to iOS devices. I have yet to encounter that. I've had it take a second or two to register as a connected device but it does always connect. My only complaint is it doesn't work with the 1 meter lightning/usb-c cable from Apple. I wanted to use it with a short mmcx cable and have the Beam basically land where a microphone/controls typically would but it doesn't register.

The sound quality is simply awesome, but the connection gets lost at times (very rarely, perhaps 2-3 times in a couple of days). The quality of the connection cables is also not so convincing, I'm wondering how (and if) they will stand of time and usage. All in all, it was worth it for me, it has seriously boosted the performance of my SE535's, I cannot imagine plugging them directly into the phone any longer.

A lot of DSP going on but drives headphones decently. Doesn't works with high input impedance devices, makes hissing noise.

what do you define as a high-impedance device? No where in the description is this stated. please provide your source of this information. Only mention of impedence I can see is the output power for very high-impendence of 600ohms? "Output power: -114 dB THD+N, 2 Vrms into 600 ohms" which is confusing since mw output is stated for 32ohms...not that much power @32ohms either. thx

minimeMAGAHeadphones are not high input impedance devices. I was referring to something like the input of amps.

Two issues with this unit. First: The steps of the volume control are too course. Second: It takes two or three insertions of the lightning adapter to process sound through the headphones. Sound quality is very good, better than the internal DAC of my IPhone 8 and it has more power available to drive headphones. I primarily bought this for its DSD capabilities, but given the issues above, I would look for another option.
