Product Description
In many of Apple’s most popular product lines, the headphone jack is long gone. For those with beloved IEMs, headphones, and other listening devices, this poses a problem Read More
A commenter at ASR asserted that the Tera Grand Lightning > 3.5mm adapter is simply the stock Apple dongle wrapped in a more durable PVC jacket. Looking closely at the two side-by-side, this seems quite likely. You mentioned that the Tera Grand sounds "noticeably better" than the Apple dongle "due to a different chip." Do you have a reference for this claim, that the TG is using a different DAC chip? Thanks!
For an average listener the sample rate from lightning is fine but for the critical listener the sample rate it’s pretty awful. Especially for a company who’s phone derived from a DAP.
So for those curious, I confirmed with the DD HiFi staff that the DAC/AMP is identical to the stock Apple dongle. You should see some benefit from a more isolating stainless steel case, however, don't expect huge changes there. So basically you're paying for the build quality and form factor! On a side note, the plug does protrude quite a bit and will fit the vast majority of cases, cheers.
RJSLBSInteresting, I cannot see any entry for it in the MFi database https://mfi.apple.com/account/accessory-search
I wonder if they might be literally buying the Apple adapter/DAC and reassembling it inside a different case.
I think you might be right, I tried the dongle on my wife's phone and it sounds great, something's wrong with my phone.
... and after further digging I found it. At Settings | Accessibility | Audio/Visual there's a switch to force Mono.
Info for the USB Type C version. I assume it’s similar for this model.
The DD HiFi TC35B features the ALC5686 Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) of the company with Thitronix which can provide an audio performance with a SNR of 124 dB DNR and a Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise (THD+N) of 95dB.
IsmapicsSwampy was looking at the USB-C to find what DAC they use. This is a lightning dongle. Thanks for mentioning the ASR article. Interesting that USB-C seems more impressive than lightning.
At $35, I guess the question is simply, will it last longer than 4 of Apples cheap white adapters ($9 each) . It will certainly be just as easy to lose...
I also need to know if it will work if your iphone is in a case as I presume many are? Useless if the lightning male is not long enough to reach thru the case you are using.
FearlessleaderThat’s how much I paid and it took forever for it to arrive to Texas. I think customs was part of the reason. COVID related delays may have been the other.
So, I'm a bit confused: does this come with a DAC in it, and if so, how much of an audible difference will you hear using this vs using the standard Apple dongle? Granted this does look a lot nicer, not sure if it's really worth the extra $. Can someone convince me otherwise?
EDIT: So I actually ended up buying this little guy (TC25I) from Amazon since I missed the drop deadline. I have to say, that it's just OK. Does it sound better than the Apple dongle? Yes, a tiny bit - there's a bit more clarity and definition to the details, but nothing that makes me think, "Wow, this is a noticeable improvement over the apple dongle!" I remember someone on a FB HP group saying there was a HUGE difference in sound quality. However, I didn’t find that to be is the case at all ... Is it a noticeable difference? Just a tad. Is it worth $40? Let's see how the build quality is in the long run. It looks nice, and at the drop price of around $33, I suppose it's not a bad deal. I doubt I'll buy one for my iPad though, or a replacement if the one I bought breaks for whatever reason.
I've decided to leave it in a "permanent" adapter on setup in my studio room so that I don't need to worry about losing it - it's definitely a worry given the size of it. It'll do the job where it is. Definitely don't expect much out of it, and you won't be disappointed.
It's still working quite well actually! I have it in a setup that I don't use daily (more like every other week), but it's held up fine and with zero issues so far. Can't say as much for some other cheaper third-party adapters I have though.
HawaiiRAh, so you have gotten issues using 3rd party adapters on your Apple decive(s)? Strange that one 3rd party adapter works but most others don't. Must've outsmarted the system ;)
I have an Otter Box Defender case on my XR, will this be compatible with it? If so, would be worth the money, should hold up a lot better than an Apple Dongle.
FrogmeatI replied above to another user. It works with a case. My case is maybe 3 mm thick and there is probably another 3 mm to spare. I haven’t had it long enough to confidently say it’s more sturdy than the Apple adaptor.
FrogmeatUpdating to let you all know, I have an iPhone XR with an Otterbox Defender case, and this adapter fits no problem with the case. One good thing about Lightning plug is you can insert it either way, unlike the USB micro plug.
