There are no bad tunings, only bad pairings :)
I have almost totally switched my perspective on this headphone. When I first listened to it, I thought I would hate it. The tuning frankly sounded strange -- too much boost to the mid-bass produced what sounded like a veil almost up to the top. I would take it out of the box every now and then to try it, each time confirming what I didn't like. And then last week I switched the stylus in my turntable and started listening to vinyl again. The Ortofon 2M Blue stylus sounded a bit light in the bass. And I thought, "Maybe I should try the 8xx again." And I did -- and the pairing sounds perfect, absolutely perfect. All the great qualities of the 8xx in any application remain: soundstage, comfort, etc.; and the main gripe I had with it, the tuning, balances what's coming out of cartridge perfectly. Optimal balance of instruments in jazz, detail, natural timbre. It is an extremely capable headphone -- you may just need to use EQ or to find the right pairing. Enjoy!

I have many headphones and these are top of line. I can wear them all day while sitting a the computer. I can easily tell the difference between raw playback and compressed.

I truly don't understand the hate - They're f***ing amazing
I bought these last year when the 'Z' sale was going on. I immediately loved them upon listening. They were unlike anything I've ever heard in terms of realism/soundstage, etc... Stupidly, I read all of the reviews online and watched the review videos from the larger youtube headphone reviewers (most of whom trashed the headphones) and let them convince me the headphones were trash, resulting in me eventually returning them. Needless to say, I've regretted it ever since. Now, over a year later, I ended up re-buying them used (after waiting/hoping drop would re-release them) and I don't regret it in the slightest. I did end up paying more for them used than the original sale price for the ones I returned, so returning them in the first place is my biggest regret. I truly don't understand why so many reviewers hated this headphone. It's like they all got together beforehand and decided to jointly bash them, just for the fact that they sound slightly different than the original HD800S. Do the HD800S sound slightly better than the HD8XX? Yeah, they probably do; but the point is that they were several hundred dollars cheaper than the originals, and many of us literally paid HALF for them vs the MSRP of the HD800S. That's an AMAZING price for a headphone that's 95% as good (or some would consider even better than the HD800S.) I truly don't understand why so many people were butthurt about them not sounding identical when they were priced so much more affordably. I've come to the conclusion that those people just suck, and count it as a lesson to not let reviewers and youtube 'influencers' affect my future decisions w/ gear. I just wish the cable were shorter; but that's a minor issue.

woktrr1919>I truly don't understand why so many reviewers hated this headphone.  It's because many of those people thought frequency response curves were the end all-be all when it comes to judging audio equipment. Once _____ posted frequency data for the 8XX, that was it. I paid full price for my OG 8XX and have never regretted it. Glad to hear others took advantage of sales to find out for themselves. Between these, my OG Focal Clears, and Camp Fire Holocene IEM, I hit end game and just enjoy music. Cheers!

Over criticized, incredible price
I'll admit the stock tuning is a bit wonky but it's FAR from unlistenable if you're not deadset on Harman being your one and only. The separation, low end clarity, and treble tambre suffer a bit in the stock FR but if you're willing to put the time in to sticker mod it, it gives it a much more cohesive sound. Either way it's a technical powerhouse but definitely not an all rounder. I love this headphone but I couldn't have it be my only.

Comprehensive Review of the Drop + Sennheiser HD 8XX Headphone
Introduction: The Drop + Sennheiser HD 8XX headphones are a much-anticipated collaboration between two renowned brands in the audiophile world. These headphones are an evolution of the classic Sennheiser HD 800 series, known for their exceptional soundstage and detail retrieval. In this review, we will examine the sound signature, strengths and weaknesses, and some recommended amp/DAC pairings for the HD 8XX. Sound Signature: The HD 8XX headphones boast an incredibly neutral and balanced sound signature, with a slight emphasis on the treble. The bass is tight, controlled, and extends deep, providing an excellent foundation for the overall sound. The midrange is smooth and natural, allowing vocals and instruments to shine without any harshness. The treble is the star of the show here, providing exceptional detail and airiness that make for an engaging listening experience. Strengths:
  1. Soundstage: The HD 8XX has an expansive and holographic soundstage, rivaling that of some of the best open-back headphones on the market. The imaging is precise, allowing you to pinpoint individual instruments and vocalists with ease.
  2. Detail Retrieval: The headphones excel at revealing the smallest nuances in a track, ensuring that nothing goes unnoticed.
  3. Build Quality: The HD 8XX is well-built, using premium materials like aluminum and high-quality plastics. The comfort is also top-notch, with large, plush ear pads and a well-distributed weight.
Weaknesses:
  1. Treble Sensitivity: While the treble emphasis can be exciting, it may be fatiguing for some listeners, especially those who are sensitive to higher frequencies.
  2. Amplification Requirements: Due to the high impedance (300 Ohms) and relatively low sensitivity, these headphones require a powerful amp/DAC to truly shine.
  3. Price: The HD 8XX is a premium product with a price tag to match, which might be a barrier for some potential buyers.
Amp/DAC Pairings: To fully appreciate the HD 8XX's capabilities, a powerful amp/DAC is essential. Here are some recommendations:
  1. Schiit Audio Jotunheim 2: This balanced amp/DAC provides ample power and control for the HD 8XX, while adding a touch of warmth to the sound signature.
  2. Topping A90 + D90: This combination offers an extremely clean and detailed sound, with more than enough power to drive the HD 8XX to their full potential.
  3. iFi Audio Pro iDSD: For those seeking an all-in-one solution, the Pro iDSD offers a plethora of input options and a powerful amplifier, ensuring a versatile and high-quality listening experience with the HD 8XX.
Conclusion: The Drop + Sennheiser HD 8XX headphones are an excellent choice for audiophiles seeking a neutral, detailed, and expansive soundstage. With the right amp/DAC pairing, these headphones will provide countless hours of immersive listening. While the price and treble emphasis may not be for everyone, those who invest in the HD 8XX will be rewarded with an exceptional audio experience.

Different than 800s
I’m not sure what to think, they sound great and have that 800 sound, not sure if the bass is significantly better. I still prefer my hd800s, but for the price you’re getting 90% I’d the hd800s with a slight different sound signature.

Great bang for the bucks
The headphone has a great soundstage and is well built. It is unrivaled in this price range. However, some eq-tune maybe needed to get the best out of it.

A good Headphone with an EQ
When Hd8XX with an EQ is a GREAT Headphone. HD8XX is a total different headpone, compared with Hd800 and Hd800s.
