Construction

Returning the tradition back to its flint and steel roots, the nanoSTRIKER fire starters are CNC machined and consist of a 6061 aircraft aluminum body, a tungsten striking tool, and a ferrocerium rod. While the metals may be more advanced, the practice is the same. After collecting some tinder (dry grass, cotton ball with Vaseline, lint), create a loose bundle as the base. Hold the striker in one hand and scrape it against the rod at an angle with medium force and speed, shaving material from the rod as you do. Don’t worry about being gentle with the striker, as the custom molded and precision ground tungsten has four striking edges, retains its edge well, and is second only to diamond in hardness.

Final Touches

The resulting molten globulars come in hot at 5500° F, more than hot enough to get a good inferno going. If you are caught in the elements and need a fire, you may have to shield your timber from incoming rain, but you won’t have to worry about your tools as the ferrocerium rod creates sparks even when wet. When you’re done for the day, simply return this little lifesaver back to its waterproof case, slip it on your key-chain, and head to your next adventure.
