Fostex TR-70 Headphones

DaveTheBrassmanBuild quality is a smidgen better in the TR-70-250 compared to the HE-4xx, and the Fostex cans are much more comfortable than the HiFiMan (imho). The TR-70 uses the same headband assembly and earpads as the T30/40/50/60RP, so it is very easy to find aftermarket comfort upgrades. You will not have the ear-cups easily detaching from the swivel assembly in the TR-70, unlike the HE-4xx which is known to have had press-fit issues with it causing the earcups/driver assembly to fall off. The HE-4xx is much easier to get upgraded/balanced cables for, the TR-70 uses a proper 3.5mm TRRS, but has a custom locking body that is not easily available for DIY purposes. The price is low because these aren't terribly popular cans. They got some bad initial reviews, but at $65 they are very much so worth it. They need heavy break-in time and once broken-in are great all-around cans.

DaveTheBrassmanI bought the TR-70 a couple of years ago and had to return them because the adjusting piece wouldn't stay in place and kept sliding down my head. Tightening the screws did not address the issue. I currently own the HE-4XX, and its construction is vastly superior: among the best-built of all the (dozens of) headphones I've ever owned. (But keep in mind that the 4XX requires a powerful amplifier to reach anywhere near its maximum performance.)

What do people have to say on the size of these headphones. Will they fit large/wide heads? Asking for a friend ;)

eneroAbsolutely. My gourd ain't the smallest, and these cans fit wonderfully. Plus they play nice with large gauge piercings.

I have the 80 ohm TR-70 (bought from Amazon.) I payed $99, and I feel like that was a good price for the quality of the headphone. The small pads are a no-go, as my ears touch the driver. The bigger pads are quite comfortable for me. The cable is okay, but not as nice as the one on the T-60rp. The 80 ohm versions are very easy to drive, have a lot of bass extension, a bit of a warm swell to the whole bass region, and good air on the highs. I don't find them to be overly fatiguing, but they do have more sizzle than all my cans, save for the Sennheiser HD700s. I find that I listen to the TR-70s quite a lot, picking them over the T-60rps and the Neumann NDH-20s frequently enough to surprise myself. I think that the TR series didn't get traction initially, and was unfairly maligned in some reviews. Too bad. I think they're good 'phones. The Drop price is a steal.

I just installed the Brainwaves pads you mentioned. They do settle the headphone down significantly. They still have plenty of bass punch and present treble, but they've been taught some manners. Also, the pads are very comfy. Only downside is that they seem to clamp a bit less and the lack of padding on the top strap is a bit more obvious. Thanks for the advice!

we recommend the sheepskin for this or using the x00 hybrid pad on it. better response from that. The ELVL not a great match for this headphone.

Cans arrived. First annoyance, they used an ultra slim locking TRRS. I'm ok with the locking, but the design makes it rather difficult to make custom cables for it. Guess I'll be using them in unbalanced config until I can find one of these locking plugs for use in DIY.

Got ship notice for the cans, they should be here Wednesday (after upgrade). Looks like MassDrop used UPS SurePost with this lot, and while I'm still pissy about the use of the slowest shipping methods possible, UPS does let me upgrade to ground for $3.50 per package (or $40 a year for unlimited). This saves up to three days (likely one day) by skipping the UPS to USPS segment of the delivery. I really wish I had the option to pay for enhanced shipping like I do when buying in stock items (knowing that it won't actually ship until the expected date). I'm totally o.k. with spending extra money to make sure my stuff gets to me quicker, and with less time spent rattling on road or slamming around in the transition from carrier to USPS. Still looking forward to these cans, no matter what form of shipping.

These are absolutely INCREDIBLE for FPS gaming. Important details in sound are easily noticed, such as footsteps. Fostex should make a gaming headset out of these. The V-Moda BoomPro works fine with these, together, a great ~$100 headset option if the sound signature of gaming headsets aren't your thing.

Thanks for the info! I'm not big on closed for gaming, I have a pair of m50x's laying around somewhere, but dont use them much now that I work from home. Loved them for the office. I like the DT880's but since none of the Beyer's fit my head right, I had to get rid of them (as well as the 990's). I love my 770X's for gaming, the only way I can describe them is "Haunting". Playing creepy games with them make me want to poop my pants! Thats really what I look for when picking headphones. On your word, I might have to give them a try. If nothing else, I LOVE opening a fresh box of headphones, that alone might be worth the $65 clams :D

Hey just an update, Ive been using these for the past week and Im very happy to say that their pretty awesome! Ive been swapping between my ATHAD700X's and these and Im really hard pressed to tell the difference with sound. My only gripe about these are the ear pads and the lack of movement in the ear cups. They dont completely cover my ears in the back. They just wont move that way. I guess Im going to have to get better pads for them and hope that that will fix the problem. Thanks again for the recommendation!

This isn't a horrible price for these cans. I do have a fondness for the Foster OEM dynamic drivers, so I'm fairly curious to see how these compare. I can totally live with the V sound profile, new earpads will be able to bring this under control. As is, I can totally stand some extra thump, I just hope they aren't overly sibilant. Feature wise, they're pretty loaded for the price bracket; 250ohm drivers, balanced wiring (datasheet has socket diagram) in the style of the T60RP, easily sourced leather replacement earpads from Brainwavz or Dekoni, and likely able to take headband comfort strap mods similar to what the T-X0 II or T60RP ship with. I guess mineminemine at the end of July... gunna need another headphone hanger for the desk, methinks.
