Product Description
Pushing the boundaries of planar magnetic design, Gold Planar is going big in the GL2000: a flagship pair of headphones with never-before-seen drivers. Raising the bar head and shoulders over many other planar magnetic drivers, Gold Planar increased the surface area and magnet strength of the drivers on the GL2000 to optimize airflow and responsiveness Read More
I wouldn't buy anything from Gold Planar.
I bought the GL1200s, they do not support the product after purchase.
If you have any problems with your headphones after the return date, they'll give you the run-around and make it incredibly hard for you to resolve issues.
The GL1200s are $1400 headphones, imagine the service you'll get from these.
If you have money to burn, I would try these, but I regret my purchase from Gold Planar.
this pair of headphones has potential but sounds weird / odd. i have modded my hifiman he6 and he 560 before and i managed to mod this gl2000 and it sounds really incredible now . Considering i bought this for $410 bucks from a person who did not like it - its a bargain . im pairing it with xduoo ta 10r and topping e30L30 combo .
so far im happy with this for a budget set up .
screwdriver101btw the mod are the following : ali express earpads 120mm , removed paper that sticks to the driver, removed one of the two dust protectors , i used sorbothane strips 40 duro 0.10 mm thickness and cut some strips to line up the earcups to make it tight and solid and sealed , i might blu tack the gaps . So before the mod the gl 2000 is an average headphone that sounds weird- After the mod its so detailed, airy , its banging , slamming .
i ended up selling the hifiman ananda.
Take your GL2Ks and plug them into an OTL tube amp (Darkvoice, TA-26, or something like my Feliks Elise). You'll thank me later.
I managed to get a pair a day or two the original hype train hit. The train and GP's questionable practices to rush production lead to a ton of variance within a particular/infamous reviewer community I'm a part of. Out of the several dozen sets, it was all over the playing field and depended on if you got your order in before they originally went out of stock from the Chinese site or ordered on Drop. Ordering from Drop in that situation (not Drop's fault) put the timing of the first batch around the time GP scrambled.
I think the hype has died down having plenty of months, and I'd argue these are a solid investment for enjoyment (maybe not resale value). They don't quite touch the Verites and 909 I love, but the sheer fact they are a planar that OTL tubes like a champ lent them a special place on my wall.
I really don't know why some people would prefer this to the ananda. I bought the double-sided version a month ago and compared it to my ananda. Let's get to the positives first.
First the build quality is so much better on these there is no contest. The ananda feels flimsy. This feels super solid. There's no rough edges and the CNC work looks meticulous. Holding it in your hand you can tell the creator spent a lot of time making sure the build is up to snuff. The pads are also very nice. It comes with leather pads installed on the headphone and another set of D-shaped hybrid pads. They are very well built. The pads on the anandas look like toy in comparison.
Unfortunately the good things end here. Once I put it on and hit play, I have a hunch that these probably aren't in the same league as the ananda. Just to be safe, I left it on my desk and let it burn in for 120 hours. Yes, five straight days playing all sorts of music. And bear in mind that I'm using the balanced port on my iHA-6, connected to a Resonessence Labs dac so power is not an issue. These have definitely improved after five days but I still don't see them playing in the same league as the ananda. I'm no expert in FR, but what I'm hearing kind of aligns with Resolve's review --- it sounds wonky. There's some treble haze and the bass isn't as defined as I would've liked. The Ananda, especially when you compare them side-by-side, sounds a lot more natural. They are not as dynamic as the GL2000, but it just sounds more correct, there is a soothing musicality that you just don't get with the GL2000. Yes the build is much worse, but the sound is a lot more mature and well-tuned.
This concludes my review. I'd buy the GL2000 in a heartbeat if only the sound is as good as the build. Being the OEM of M1060s they knocked it out of the park in build quality, but SQ leaves a lot to be desired. At this price, the Ananda is still the much better choice in my opinion, if you can settle with the somewhat plasticky build quality. I find it funny how hifiman keeps cutting corners yet still produce the best headphone in almost every price bracket. It's becoming a brand image of theirs, sort of.

EDIT: To clarify, I got the headphone mid-January. Not sure if it's the latest batch, but they did come with a set of D-shaped spare earpads and a really nice cable terminated in 4-pin XLR. I'm very sure the firsts batch only comes with 4.4mm cables so mine must be the 2nd, or 3rd batch.
EDIT II: I forget to talk about comfort. TLDR: The Anandas are much more comfortable. Again the very plasticky build actually pays dividends when it comes to comfort. They are very light, and conform to the shape of your head very well. Weight distribution is excellent. The GL2000 on the other hand feels significantly heavier. I don't know what the numbers are but it feels much heavier on the head. The weight distribution isn't as good as the ananda and the all-metal build becomes a detriment. In some way I feel that this headphone is over-built. If they use less metal it would cut the weight down significantly.
LambdastormI just don't see how it sounds that bad... you must of got a poorly built set or something. My set still sounds fantastic and I am excited to listen to it each time I hook it up. There must be some serious unit variance going on or something with these.
I ordered with expectation of receiving in June. Arrived in Oz Friday last week. So far, impressed by sound quality for price.
I need a longer cable. What other headphones use same wiring (2 x stereo 3.5mm cables to the cups)?
I only bought these because Zeos claimed they were as good as any headphone he ever listened to. To be honest price is not ever an issue for me. Plus Z really did a good job selling these cans. Especially when I hear an open-back that may be as good as my $4k LCD-4s or my $3k HE1000 V2 to name a few of my faves, I was very intrigued. I thought what the hell and bought them. After all, they appeared to be high quality in the video. They present quite well.
once I had them in my hands my viewpoint on quality changed drastically. From the cheap knock off case, to the plastic wire to the janky headphone build, everything screamed cheap. When I listened to them they weren’t terrible by any means at all. But then again they don’t remotely come close to any headphone in my collection. I found that maybe 2-4 songs in 10 sound good.
‘I have no idea how to compare these to anything else at or near their price point. I just don’t buy in that arena. I took a chance on them from Zeos’ review. Zeos is a very entertaining guy and frankly an excellent salesman!!
Unfortunately he oversold this headphone in my opinion but my reference points are much different. No harm no foul. That’s all. I ~listened to them for about a week, was unimpressed and sold them.
As for Zeos, Im still a fan because you never know what he will say next. Plus he is a wealth of electronic knowledge. What I enjoy most from his channel are those videos where he builds things or takes things apart. I learn a great deal from him in that arena. Yes it’s those hour and a half videos I’m talking about. Lol.
For Hi-Fi reviews I also watch Darko, The Audiopheliac, and JV.
i did catch DMSs video on these cans and I share his thoughts on these cans to a degree. The vocals and sub bass are crap. Everything else to me is decent. If I had limited funds I’d probably keep them just because they are a fun can that I could use as a reference point.
Buy away and have fun!
