Does anybody know the correct pronunciation of "Gustard"? Does it rhyme with "mustard" or "blue-starred" or what? If a friend asks me about it, I'd like to know I'm pronouncing it right.
CopperfoxIn other sources, I see 16-32 bit for USB. I think 16-22 is a typo. I've never heard of anything using 22 bits. I've only seen 16, 24 and 32 bit for music-related data.
holsenIt's an I2S digital audio input, ARC won't do much good with that interface. Involves DAC clock becoming synched/slaved to the source. Pretty niche stuff but supposedly overcomes usb "shortcomings". I know for some DAC's they handle native DSD via I2S but only DoP via USB.
Just in case. If someone is hesitating. This DAC , said by many audiophiles, beats in sound quality other DACs , ten times more expensive. It,s proccessor ES9038PRO, is maybe the best available right now in terms of pure quality of sound. Also its construction and all the components are high-end. You can read in many forums many opinions about the excelent sound it delivers. Some of them has sold their much more expensive DACs to get this one.
WalterBlackDisposable income and an unshakable case of "Upgraditis". This hasn't even scratched the surface of price class craziness, look up Simaudio, TotalDac, PS Audio, Chord Dave... I don't know how anyone "justifies" more than pack in/low cost listening gear. Audio is a luxury like many things, doesn't need justification just the desire and the resources.
For what it's worth for those wondering about the sound quality of recent Gustard products, I took a chance (given the relative limited # of exposure/high end comparison reviews) on the 'matching' H20 amp referenced below, and have been pleasantly surprised (after a slightly longer than expected break in - or brain adjustment as you prefer, not wanting to have that discussion today/here).
So I would encourage others not to discount the sound quality of at least the more recent Gustard products _too_ quickly. (Reliability is another question - I agree there is some reason for caution, but it seems to being improving or have improved, but we'll see how that plays out for the newer Gustard products.)
On the other hand, this model doesn't have the latest dual 9038 tech (like the LKS for exampleMH-DA004 - not that that will automatically sound better, but the some reviews have been good), or lowest price like the Schiit or even Airist, and again, not a lot of high-end comparison reviews that I have found.
So, for those who may have actually heard the competition in this price range (or higher), would anyone be able to, and care to compare the sound quality, or point to good comparisons?
elauSorry I missed the question, in case you haven't found the answer yet, the 9038 refers to the latest model of the Sabre DAC chip set. A few recent DACs have used a dual 9038 design, and been very well reviewed. It's not clear (to me at least) whether that's due to the use of the two 9038 chips, other aspects of the implementation being very good, or a combination of factors. In any case, in my experience at least, a dual 9038 chip design is definitely not the only way to get really good, even top of the line/state of the art sound from a DAC design. Imho. Sorry if any (or all) of that is obvious.
