Solved! ESS does NOT make a 9281 chip. Here's the relevant webpage: https://www.esstech.com/products-overview/digital-to-analog-converters/low-power-dacs-and-socs-to-headphone-socs/ As you can see the 9218 is listed, but not any "9281".

For those wondering why I question whether the ESS DAC is the 9281c or the 9218c it is because my LG phones already have the ESS9218 in them, so buying this would not make any sense for me.

Contradictory info on the DAC. On the hiliDAC Audirect Beam 2S info page at their website, the DAC is listed both as the ESS9281c and the ESS9218c. They are different beasts. Which one is correct?

Can I use this as a discrete DAC and run it into a 4.4mm receiving balanced amp?

graphiccomputersIt is the only one that matters, as it can't be done in software. Most all MQA supporting clients will do the initial unfold in software.

NotAFruitNot terribly well. You'll find that you have to turn the volume up 100% of the way to get any impact, at least judging by how the Beam 2 (not 2S) works.
