Product Description
Instead of a single cheap tube that gives off muddled sound, the Little Dot MKIII features four tubes: two dedicated input tubes and two dedicated output tubes. Letting your left and right audio channels enter through separate RCA ports and pass through channel specific input and output tubes before joining up at the headphone jack, you get a clear signal on both sides with little to no crossover ... Mine already came in - sheesh! Props to Massdrop for getting these out quick. Initial impressions with no burn-in are positive. I've got no noise on either channel - everything sounds great! 5-day edit: Pulled the tubes to take a closer look at them and clean up some dust/fingerprints, only to realize that my amp came with GE JAN-5654W driver tubes instead of the listed GE 5654 ones - NICE! Now this is my first tube amp so I'm hardly an expert, but from what I've read the JAN-5654W's are a considerable step up over the regular 5654's. Maybe that's why I didn't experience any of the popping or hiss that some folks have complained about? Anywho, I've already got some tubes coming in to do a bit of rolling: Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV and Hytron JHY-6AK5 driver tubes, as well as Novosibirsk 6H6P-I power tubes. The Hytron's actually came in today, and the initial impressions are very positive: the JAN-5654W's sounded a little bit incoherent and muddy in the bass department, but these Hytron's seem much tighter there. They also seem to be crisper and clearer overall. It'll be interesting to see how they sound after a little bit of burn-in, ditto with the GE's. So far, I'm loving this amp!

Any tube recommendation for it to have a stronger bass, clean intimate mid rage and slightly peaked highs ? I don't wanna spend so much on the tubes yet since it will be my 1st tube purchase

I have a question, pardon me, i'm a noob when it comes to audiophile gear. i'm thinking of getting one of these for monitoring audio samples for mixing. is this a good buy? also, i saw the connectors at the back, how would i go about connecting that to the pc? i only have the jacks on the io of the motherboard so i also got a bit lost here too. thanks in advance.

for a 300$ this tube amp is 200$ so you've 100$. I think (Schiit Modi) DAC is going to be good for you. it is 99$. I've AudioEngine D1 DAC and when I use it with my M50x it is fine but too bright for me. So I've joined the drop and I'll pair it with MK3. Beware from your last point, the DACs like modi does not have headphone input because it is ONLY A DAC. you need AMP+DAC. like Modi DAC and this MK3 for example. So you'll need both, or you could find some cheaper dac+amp combo. If you don't want this tube amp, you can get Magni+ Modi Combo. But for M50x I think it is overkill tbh but still cheaper.

Oh lol I know I might be late but I would not recommend a tube amp for monitoring purposes.. because although little dot MK doesn't do a lot of it, but tube amps 'color' or 'taint' sound in its own way. but for monitoring, we need things as pure as possible, don't we schiit stuff is good. Modi and magni for your budget, however, I STRONGLY recommend jotunheim with balanced dac module. You will never 'need' another headphone amp in the future.

I have a mkii and after some tube rolling it’s really awesome. Would have gone for the mkiii ( all tube not hybrid ), but I think you can get an mkii on Amazon under 200... just saying

hybrid? Why on earth use 4 tubes if you aren't going to commit to a pure all tube signal path. Kind of a waste of time and money. I've owned a lot of tube gear over the years. From guitar and bass amps to mic preamps and open reel tape recorders. One thing that is evident, hybrid designs compromise the benefits of using tubes. I don't think it's anything as esoteric as even vs odd harmonics as some will tell you. Rather that tube electronics run at high voltages and solid state audio electronics do not. So in order to use both in the same audio path, you have to knock down the voltage/current to something that will not cause the transistors to let out the magic smoke. This is easy to do galvanically with an interstage transformer. But that is not a cheap component, even more so if you want good audio specs. More often than not I see companies doing the Aphex trick of running tubes at low voltage and current. Aphex famously even put an LED behind their tubes to simulate the normal glow you would see! Sure it's possible, but I am skeptical.

MKIII uses 4 tubes and is not a hybrid. MKIII SE uses 2 tubes and is a hybrid

What is going on with this drop? I joined back in early February and it was supposed to ship by March 15. I haven't had any updates and I can't even find where I placed the order. It's like it got deleted from the system.

Hi I’ve recently purchased a MK III headphone amp. and am having difficulty with where to plug into source from the inputs on the back of the unit. Do I have to unplug each component such as my CD player and plug the headphone amp onto that or my phono stage? Seems silly but I’m not getting any volume from the amp? any thoughts?

Quick question: I have the amp unplugged from power, but the signal still passes through to the headphones, low volume, ofc. Even if take out all the tubes, it still passes through to the headphone jack and the preouts on the back. Is this OK?

Right but it isn’t active and no one knows when it will be. So if you need a tube amp now it’s an easy choice.
