Does anyone have any recommendation for something in the <$300 tier maybe $200. I've heard many good things, and came from the HD-6XX post but I'm looking for something like it but closed and similar price point to HD-6XX.
lastzeroNot many comparable options at $200. At $300 there are quite a few. M1060, HD600, Fidelio X2. There are also TH-X00's on Ebay for a little over $300, but that's a slight gamble with no warranty.
lastzero200 or less and closed? Depends on your style and there are plenty of options don't let anyone say otherwise. Remember 99 percent of headphones are 200 or less. I will admit though the 300 dollar price range is sweet mid-fi. Under 200 my favorite are the dt880 but you don't want open so......
dt770, bit of a v shape sound (i like mids 2 much for them), great bass. I'd recommend them if that's up your ally.
You can get a lot of monitor, flat-sounding cans for 200 or under too
like samson, sony, yamaha, audio technica, HM5s
don't feel like you need to spend more than 200 or 300 either. I've had cans priced in the thousands and how happy did they make me?
Not happy at all. Right now my favorite headphones are the Amiron Home, but they are out of your range and the dt880 is no joke my close 2nd favorite. I wear those 880s a good 40 percent of the time among the 3 I rotate most often, just shows that price point doesn't mean jack. And I got those for 140 and they've got cheap replacement pads on them, they sound so good.
zhouharveyYeah, my comment can be disregarded. I glossed over the "closed" specification. I was recommending open headphones that were fairly close to the 650 sound quality wise.
lastzeroI have them both, they are closed back, and I am very happy with them.
$200 audio-technica ATH‑MSR7 - sound amazing, easy to drive by cellphone, but be ready for the highs, nice bass.
$100 audio-technica ATH-M40X - sound great, easy to drive but plug is fat for some cellphone covers, optionally add the $50 ZMF leather pads for confort. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6wBv03B1nk
I will join the $80 HM5 drop currently available, demo sounds great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo2xDhu7JK8
lastzeroThe only people that makes alot of good closed or semi closed headphones at that price range is Beyerdynamic. But man you have to do alot of research to get some good ones they put out so much crap even im not sure which pair to pick up. Time for you to go look at some reviews on youtube or something lol.
DenonFanboyA lot of people say that the 880 has harsh highs, but I don't think they do at a moderate listening level (70-75db). But I have the 600 ohms and most agree they have good highs that aren't fatiguing. I hear the 32 ohms have pretty sharp highs... the 250 ohm is a compromise and I hear they sound near the same as the 600s. I don't think you can go wrong. If you have a really strong amp though get the 600s. Also just a small warning, while these cans do have some bass it is pretty light. I would call these headphones pretty neutral with some warmth in the mid-lower mids. With some pad swaps they do have more bass but lose some soundstage. They have a very nice, natural soundstage to them though (a very strong suit for them).
