It's comfortable, functional and more stylish than you would think. The mesh pockets cam in handy more than I expected. I've found myself picking the Shadow Fast Pack as a go to for quick outings more so than any other backpack around. It's straightforward in the best way possible.
I really like this bag leaves something to be desired. I can't really put my finger on it, but the materials are good and the design is very simple (in a good way). Anyone with a miniscule pack loadout could use this for multiple nights, but most of us are lucky to get more than one night out of the space. Overall pretty happy
It is definitely not stitched or made well. But I looked through where if failed for everybody else and I preemptively added tenacious tape and seam glue to the common failure spots. The backpack has worked perfectly for me for long day trips with my wife. I can comfortably carry a jacket or two for the each of us and plenty of snacks.
Pros:
The pack is comfortable, light and holds a decent amount of stuff.
Cons:
The super wide straps do get a bit hot in warm weather
The backing board slides out rather often so it would be nice to have a way to secure it.
The backing board is also about 1/4 - 1/2 inch too tall and is causing the inner pockets stitching to come loose and pull away from the bag.
It would be nice to have the side pockets a few inches taller to prevent water bottles from falling out so easily.
March 2023 update: I added buttons to hold the backing plate in place, I also had to stitch up a tear between the shoulder straps but it has torn twice since. I also have switched to a 2L hydrapak bladder which does not fit in the small side pockets. Still a nice pack but would like to see these issues fixed.
I don't like how the straps are built, and as mentioned the pockets are quite small, though perfect for small snacks.
I would actually not prefer a roll top for such a bag, because there is not enough material slack for rolling.
Otherwise it is comfortable and cheap for such a bag.
I bought this to hold a 1/2 night fast packing load, and to serve as a daypack.
While I haven't yet used it on an overnight, it has plenty of room for my Drop X-mid, Klymit pad, and down quilt, along with a titanium pot and some freeze dried meals. May not fit a full 3L bladder with all that stuff in there, but the side pockets are wide enough to hold a smartwater bottle. So in terms of size, I am pleased, but no word how well the bag carries this weight.
The 5 stars is for the bag as a daypack, and in that role it is great. My daypack load is a Patagonia micro puff, first aid kit, tarp+cord and stakes, sunscreen, and a bunch of Cliff bars. I use the interior pocket to hold my wallet and keys, and the interior clip lanyard to hold a water bladder. The loops on the straps are the perfect location to run the water hose through, and the front pockets are just right for my Pixel 1 with case. While the provided backpanel is good, I use a thermarest zlite sit pad hanging from the rolltop enclosure to provide structure and ventilation - expect your back to get sweaty with this bag! In addition to carrying all of this well, the bag holds it all down well while running and doesn't bounce very much - perfect for trail running, as advertised!
For daypack use, 5/5.
Great pack, but one of my side pockets already ripped through the bottom. The only thing that's been in it is a nalgene 1 liter and I've only carried it to work when I ride my bicycle.
Cool idea and some neat designs. Top closure snap was broken on arrival(not a big deal). I had the top strap pop out of the guide. The build quality is poor. Also the stretchy pockets are not very stretchy.
