The most affordable of Mitchell & Johnson’s hybrid electrostatic headphones, the GL1 has a design similar to its more expensive siblings, allowing you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. It does this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use. Thanks to the sealed ear cups and 32-ohm impedance, the GL1 makes a great travel headphone and is also well suited for home listening. It can be easily driven by most sources, is fitted with a cable for smartphones, and comes with a plug adapter.
Describing the sound, FullSync says, “When it comes to audio quality, the GL1s tick all the boxes: excellent clarity, bass that packs a punch, and detail that you may not necessarily pick up when using a cheaper pair of headphones.”
