Well, we've spent a lot of time bellyaching about the delivery but very few have talked about the ties yet. They are beautiful. The pattern and sheen on my B1 stand out from most store-bought ties and look sharp on gray and blue suits. It would be a real pity to see the community give up on @Panta over this misadventure.
We're now 10 days after the ties have been delivered to Massdrop, some people have received their ties already, others have received shipping notifications - I still have nothing. I do really believe that Massdrop or Panta should reach out to all buyers asap to clarify, if only to let us know when the ties will be shipped.
Well that's strange because I got the original order confirmation so my address is definitely correct... But it's good to hear the ties are on their way. Would you mind sending the tracking number? Thanks
Shipping notification received. The dream is alive.
I'm used to GMTO fiascos (and I agree, this could have been way worse), but MassDrop's communication on this was TERRIBLE. I shouldn't have to constantly check this thread to find out what is going on. Worse still, I am hearing from the vendor, not the company that has my money.
The biggest flaw for any drop on here, whether GMTOs like this or standard stuff like shoe trees and card games, is the wait time. If MassDrop wants to keep me interested in stuff like this then better communication is a must. This is all meant as constructive feedback. Very happy to be receiving my tie.
FLLWSorry to hear that, but thanks for the feedback. We try to stick to our scheduled updates and to give meaningful information when it's available, but thanks for your comment. Generally speaking our logistics team provides updates (and these are automatically emailed to participants), but in this drop Ed wanted to keep everyone updated himself because he's very invested in the project.
Either way, orders are shipped out so that's good news!
IanAndersonI would second FLLW's point. I find it abnormal that Massdrop never ever sent an email after placing the order to give an update on the delays, and that I had to come to this (of all) places to find out what was going on. And now I'm not really thrilled to hear that some people have received shipping confirmations while others not. What's going on? How are you going about shipping? An update would be most welcome.
Ties have arrived and will be delivered to Massdrop tomorrow, 12/18.

Forgive me if I sound like a cheerleader, but of the several GTMOs I've participated in that require vendors to liaise with producers on different continents (and even some that are direct purchases from makers), Ed's communication and transparency has been the most consistent I've ever encountered. Considering the scale and variables involved, the production process of these ties, and the price paid for purchase, I think the value to customers is outstanding.
I'm usually not the one bitching but in this occasion am I the only one who thinks the whole process has been a bit over the top?
Initially ties were paid for in September and promised for late October. I'm based in Europe so I consider myself lucky if I see these ties before mid-January. I understand the challenges of such a group order but when every single step of the supply chain goes wrong, one is allowed to wonder if this was at all thought through before launching the idea. A pity because I have no doubt the ties will be great, but for the rest this undoubtedly ranks amongst my painful online shopping experiences.
CookieCutterWell, first off, apologies once again. The original shipping date (end of October) was set when the process started, without knowing how many ties would be ordered. When the order went over 250 (IIRC), we changed the expected date to mid November and capped the order at 350 ties. In hindsight, the expected shipping date should have been set as late November to mid December but its hard to predict some of the issues we had during the process, when we started the project. Given that the ties are made by hand and we were working with 4 different sizes, its hard to account for how many ties can be made in a day. I am now better aware of the holiday schedule in Italy (there were about 5-6 of them during this project), better aware of the time necessary to manufacture this number of ties and better aware of the communication necessary with this community when a project is in the works. As it stands, the ties will be shipped 4 weeks after the set expected shipping date. Not ideal and not something to be proud of, but also not unheard of in the realm of made to order goods.
The ties are now in Newark, NJ and they may be in my hands tomorrow.

PantaThanks for your reply, much appreciated. Long after we've forgotten the delays, we'll still enjoy the ties, so it isn't that much of a deal. I'm sure you will have learned a thing or two should you wish to repeat the exercise, but I think there's also a lesson for Massdrop. I find it surprising that they haven't proactively sent updates to participants instead of them having to check out the Styleforum or this place when they started worrying.
So UPS wants to make sure people hate me as much as possible..... The ties were shipped from Arzano on the 10th but UPS has the package as "expedited" versus "express" (the claim that my tie makers set the package up that way but that is not the case) which means instead of Friday/Monday I will now get the ties Wed/Thurs :brick: I am as frustrated as those that are awaiting the ties and I will turn them around to massdrop in one day but we have to wait a few more days, apologies again.
