The Dragonfly Black was last updated in 2013. It doesn't do all the decoding the HUD100 does. The HUD100 has more power and uses more phone battery...in terms of sound, there is not much between these dongles. The HUD100 allows for more sound variety with the three filters. This comes handy when pairing with harsh or soft sounding earphones. But if you happy, sound wise, with your Dragonfly, you don't need the HUD100. If you are going for sound only, the $149 ifi hip dac beats any dongle sound wise by far (much bigger headroom, smoother). But it is much bigger and has a consumable battery.

Schorschilol oh no I mean I already have both Dragonfly Red and HUD100 and I know I like Dragonfly Red better. But I was just curious as to how it sounds compare to Dragonfly Black (since I don't have one). In the future say if I need to recommend to my friends or something then at least I'd know what to recommend. As for me I mainly just stream off Spotify so all the extra decoding is not applicable to me, so if I can get something that's cheaper and sounds better without all the bells and whistles that would be ideal (say like in the future when I need to upgrade again, for now Dragonfly Red works). But good to know at least sound quality wise Dragonfly Black is close enough. Thanks again for the reply!!!

I chose my ES100 MKI for it's balanced output (to take advantage of the dual AK4375A chips) and 10 band EQ; it caused me to retire my Emotiva Big Ego, for listening on the road, through my laptop. Is the HUD100 a true upgrade ?

interesting design with tho HP out and that middle button. If it had battery and bit more power, I would have considered it. 52 mW (16 Ω, normal mode) 319 mW (16 Ω, high power mode)

I find if I have the product plugged into the computer, then shut down computer. Turn it on the next day and it won't turn on automatically by itself. I have to manually un-plug and re-plug to get it start again. Meaning I have to do this EVERY DAY when I first turn on the computer, anyone else have this issue?

HydeHello @Hyde, HUD100 should automatically turn on when it's connected to the laptop. I saw your review and it seems like you requested for a refund. I'm so sorry that you received a defective product.

Radsone_EmilyIt's ok no worries, both Radsone and Drop handled it really well and I was glad at least the problem was resolved quickly. I might try a different unit from Radsone again in the future. :)

I wonder why Drop always bring the product back so fast before people even receive their first batch. I mean it's shipped but I don't see it arrive my door anytime soon given the current state of affair. So unfortunately I can't provide any feedback to people who's looking to join round 2 of this drop. If they would've just pushed this back by 2 weeks or so then it would've make a lot more sense. Oh well...... *shrug*
HydeDouble-edged sword - if you and everybody else who got the first round hate it they won't sell anymore. Gotta get while the gettin's good.

njgphotographyIt's a tough call because even round 1 only sold 25 units..... so they weren't exactly "hot", but I get what you mean though lol.

There's a lot of discussion going on about the HUD100 needing more power. If you do the math, 2.26 mW are actually 319 mW @ 16 Ω - which is quite a lot on a device this small! I quite like the HUD100 and its filters are finally filters that have an audible impact on the sound. The price is in line with the features it offers, in my opinion, though I think it's better placed at $149 than at $179. I published a review on the device which you can read here: https://www.soundphilereview.com/reviews/earstudio-hud100-review-8384/

Slater91Yeah I totally agree with you, I think it's suppose to compete with Dragonfly Red ($200) in which case it's a good deal at $149 but at $179 it just seems kind of on-par even though I guess people say HUD100 sounds better. Also doesn't help that if you consider the more recent offerings (SMSL Idea, E1DA 9038S, Hifime S2 ...etc) then those are at least half price compare to Dragonfly Red and HUD100 and about similar size and functions and sound. I think if $149 is their regular price and Drop can get us somewhere in between $100-125 then this would've sold much better than the current number suggests (18 sold at the time I wrote this). EDIT: On a second thought, maybe the MEMS oscillator and Arms Cortex and being able to pack it into such a tiny package cost extra money, so maybeeeeee the price is justified. I did order one so I'll find out later lol. Details outlined on their page: https://www.radsone.com/hud100
