For me, music quality is important. The M1, for its price and size, gives excellent quality and detail in the music and has a reasonably large sound stage for this price range. The UI works well, although I have trouble seeing the tiny letters without glasses. The battery continues to hold a good charge -- I think I get about four hours on high gain playing flac and DSD files. I can use 250 ohm headphones without complaint. Overall, a great deal for a gym sized DAP.

Bought one of these back from a the drop in June 2017, and it was delivered in July 2017. After a few months (late November or early December 2017), the battery exploded (pictures: https://imgur.com/a/NKBfgis ).
Massdrop support said it was out of their warranty, and that I'd have to deal with the manufacturer. After some difficulty, I was eventually able to contact Shanling, who informed me I'd have to pay another $50 to get it repaired. (Thread on another drop where Shanling did finally reach out to me: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/shanling-m2s-digital-audio-player/talk/2120464?utm_source=linkshare&referer=VZ36TP)
If you are fortunate and get a unit without issues, it might work well for you. But if anything goes wrong, you're SOL.

Small form factor, easily fits in the pocket and simple user interface. Sounds great for an EDC DAP with both my Nuforce EDC and EDC3. Excellent value DAP or it's price point.

Controls, are OK for the size. Sound is good (much better then my phone) and I get about 9 hours battery life so happy with that. Really tiny, I use it for travel.
Would be nice to have a user guide. Starts in Chinese. Had to google it and find a Youtube video on setting it up. Goes back to Chinese when you update firmware.
Really good value for the price. Would be nice for Massdrop to sell the case as well (which I had to buy seperately).

Sound quality is pretty good and features are nice, but as others have noted the controls are a bit clunky (though no worse than a scroll-wheel iPod). I also managed to shatter the screen because I didn't put on the included screen protector and tossed it around in a jacket pocket with some keys. I still use it though and overall I like it.

Flimsy to use, poor options to navigate music collection. Horrible battery life since day 1. As a result, the M1 is collecting dust.

dJVerdeNot to my knowledge, which is unfortunate since I obviously forgot to check for replies for a full 5 weeks.

As for features it is pretty good, however the interface isn't that great and the case/screen are really, really cheap, thin and deficient. I have probably a dozen portable music players, and this is the only one where the screen is cracked and broken just from being in a backpack, and most of the plastic back of the case is also shattered and broken--I've been cutting my business cards to fit the case and taping them on to cover the shattered areas.

My first DAP and a great little music player. Interface is a bit clunky but for size and price, very adequate. Plays all files that I have and good battery life for the size. Now used as a back up as I have acquired a Sony DAP. Very happy with the purchase.
