Ideal for placing at the center of your hi-fi system, the SMSL SU-8 boasts high-end DAC features at a surprisingly low price. It’s built with many of the current specs you might expect to see in a more expensive model, including dual ES9038Q2M DAC chips, an xCORE-200 XMOS USB audio solution, and dual XLR outs for a fully balanced output Read More
Xap1008Hi all, thanks for letting us know about this! I was unaware there was a new version. I spoke to our supplier and it was confirmed the newest SMSL SU-8 V2 will be sent in this promotion!
I emailed SMSL to see if they have any plans to release the SU-8, SH-8, and DA-8 in black and they have no plans to do so at this time. Who else would love to buy these if they were available in black or other color options?
So your saying your more concerned about how a DAC meant to produce sound looks than how it sounds? Why not just buy a piece of art or rent a movie instead of even looking at buying a DAC then? I dont sit and stare at my DAC its there for one purpose make good sound for me to enjoy.
LuckyEightsWhy are you so concerned with my preferences and what I want (or don't want) to buy? I'll buy a product when it fits what I am looking for, not when it partially checks all of the boxes.
The SU-8 is absolutely a great DAC, but many potential buyers (including myself) want other color options from the factory. If that is petty/silly to you then so be it.
When the hell are we getting this thing? Its been 3 weeks man, and the last Update is from 4/5
"AWAITING INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT-AIRLINE INSPECTION." It seems it hasn't even left china. This is what I get for wanting to save $70. Not worth.
Just a followup to this thread for anyone that cares.
I finally reached Kelly again at SMSL and he offered me the chance to return my DAC to China at my expense for repair. I did so using USPS priority that cost about $23. That's the cheapest way I could find? Amazingly, it arrived in about two weeks and was repaired. My unit did suffer a small ding in one corner (probably dropped). I could have packed it better but I was worried about weight and cost of shipping. Given this little device has now traveled back and forth from China to the US twice, I consider it a badge of honor!
My DAC arrived back to me about a month after I first shipped it and now appears to working once again.
So, SMSL does stand behind their products and it is possible to do repairs/returns to China.
By the way, I believe based on all my purchases here at Massdrop I might be in the upper 10% of customers? I have also turned on a lot of people to Massdrop in my local HiFi group (100 strong). So I don't think my comments were out of line given this is the first time I actively complained about a product.
Finally, calling someone a "silly or foolish person" hardly rises to the level of invective venom? But given the hyper sensitive times we live in I will refrain from even that mild moniker.
No it isn't what it is.... They always add new products.... This is not a second hand shop. So if enough people show a desire in a product and speaks openly about it may be added. If all do like you "its all ok" nothing will ever change in every facet of society.
HIFI778Appreciate your attempts to change the world, but I just got it and it's a very worthwhile upgrade over my Musical Fidelity DAC and everything else I have. It also makes a nice color contrast with my black HiFi gear. ;)
I ordered this (version 2 - noise issues fixed) from Shenzhen Audio directly for $212 USD compared to $199. It was $12 more and a limited Christmas sale (2 days left, but no waiting until February 1st. Sorry, MD, but at least you got my money for the THX AAA 789.
ArtismoI got this, my THX AAA 789 couldn't wait that long to save $12. Mixed feelings since I'm giving up MQA for balanced compared to my current DAC/AMP. I'm also disappointed in the amount of MQA content on Tidal, so I don't think I'll miss it.
Actually there are. Usually some over priced Dac or over priced set of cans etc. I like his reviews because he thinks like I do lot of the time. Plus I have met him personally a few times over the years. A really down to earth guy that just says what he means and means what he says.
I'm going to wait for measurements from some charlatan on the Internet who tells me what to buy because the two measuring devices on the sides of my head aren't functioning properly.
"My problem is I just don't know when to say no to the next new thing, lol. "
And I thought I was one of a few with this same problem. I see the club keeps on growing :-)
