Crap pure crap, the D1 quality and SMSL customer service, or should I say their completely non existent customer service. I bought this D1 from drop after all the hype. I got it MANY months later, which was ok with me. Then, I was in the hostpital from Nov 2019 till now. I plug it in and sounds good, and less than 2 hours into it, it is not recognizable by any OS through USB. It refuses to give descriptor for itself. It shows "locked" when the USB is plugged and "unlock" when unplugged. So, okay lets try Optical... NOPE same thing. I have tried all tricks suggested by people, like 15 different things. None worked and I know a lot of people have the same problem as me. Drop ends support after 30 days and SMSL says 1 year. So, 3 months ago I tried to get to support and RMA. Nope, email is never answered at all. Nope, can't get through to support/customer service by phone AT ALL, and its expensive because I have to call China. On top of that, I have to say awak the whole night to try again with the phone because of time difference. 3 months, nothing. Zero. $850 down to trash. I will NEVER BUY SMSL AGAIN, NO MATTER WHAT THE PRICE... CRAP PURE CRAP! Stay away, it looks nice but if yours become a nice brick to look at, what use you have?

I got this from smsl-topping.com on sale (likely a drop shipper) and ran into an issue where if I push any sample rate over 192kHz (not that I have a need to) it will spontaneously add like 10dB and clip until you change sample rates again. I haven't seen anyone else run into this so I think it's a hardware issue. It happens with the native Windows driver and Thesycon ASIO driver. Quite annoying. I am selling it (shipping too expensive to return) and switching to the Topping D90, since it seems to be a better deal with an even more impressive set of stats, with the D90 being $600-700.

I'm not getting this DAC as I just recently picked up the Topping D70 retail. Tell me if I'm wrong but it would appear that Schiit is getting the Schiit kicked-out of it. Seems like there are a lot of folks leaving their Schiit for Topping and SMSL. The THX AAA 789 seems to be doing a similar job on the amp-side. SMSL too.

And I use the handy slot between the DAC and the power brick to organize all my bills--it's way hipper than my old one!

@Drop You guys really need to work on your EU store. For some of us poor folks in the EU, especially those of us with a currency other than the euro, are being bashed with excessively high import duties because of unfavorable currency conversions. For some of us the import VAT is 25%. Add to that an unfavorable exchange rate and it just becomes way too expensive to import from the US. I would jump on this DAC but with the price plus 25% in dollars plus the exchange rate and it just isn't worth it. I might as well go buy retail, if the item is even available.

The new Topping d90 is only $700 brand new and has better measurements. Smsl needs to drop the MSRP of this to compete. The d90 will likely be on drop for even less in the coming months.

Or Soncoz SGD1 for $470, or Topping DX7 Pro for $600 with a headphone amp too.

At this point, I'm not entirely sure what the point of the D1 is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing it. It is a sweet DAC; looks, features, test results. I'm just asking is it really worth $850 when SMSL keeps spitting out new designs that beat it in the test stats? They released the M500 a month or two ago for a fairly sweet $400. It uses the same ES9038Pro, has a better remote, a nice large display, does most all the same I/O (no AES, but I doubt many people here use it anyways), and supports full MQA Decode and Render (if that is your thing). It doesn't have the nice physically isolated power supply, but it does have a built in supply, not a brick. It also appears to use internal supply for USB, instead of bus power (this is inferred, not verified). ASR ran it through its paces and it is worth checking out before buying the D1. Especially considering Amirm found it was a smidgen better than the D1, test result wise. Same chip, better test results, over $400 cheaper.

This is the reason that I have chosen the Chord TT2 to me it is nothing but one of the most transparent dacs that is available. It also has one of the cleanest headphone outputs as well. I appreciate transparency in sound my daily driver headphonea are Abyss AB-1266 TC and the noble Khan. The one are where different dacs can make a bigger difference is in speaker setups. I can say that there is a marked difference in sound stage depth with the TT2 over other dacs. It presents wider and deeper than my sp1000cu which is pretty damn transparent as well.

Look I own it and moved up from a Schiit Bifrost Uber. Zeos really like this in real world listening etc. It is a solid well made unit. Are there better? There always is? But for me it just sounds awesome and it's well made. I will never use MQA any way is it is not a deal breaker for me. The Topping D90 uses the AK4499 chips. Are they better? Who knows, but not me and I am not saying they are better, the same or worse. AMR's testing works for me and the differences are not even audible AFAIK so testing only goes so far, As Van Alystine said listening is more important than specs. I owned one his amps in the day along with a Db Pre-amp and assorted other gear.

A DAC at this price makes not sense to me especially when there are other fully balanced DAC out there that perform the same at 1/4 of this price. The Pro does not sound better or different from the no Pro also so it is a gimmick. Also the Power Supply integrated in the chassis (even if in a separate compartment) making this DAC huge? Why not just make it separated and portable so it can be left on the floor like all the other gear out there? IMO this is an other overpriced item exactly like the RME.

They are all good mate. A Dac is a Dac. All depends on a slight change of sound singiture and the one you prefere. They all sound good.

A Dac is not the just a Dac. There are differences between Dacs. Just try the hugo tt2 or chord Dave the difference is very apparent. If you don't hear a difference either your transducers are lacking or you have damaged hearing.
