Well I actually did it. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I read through a ton of discussion with and without sniping. I worry about long term reliability and warranty service in addition to sound. I watched Zeos's YT a few times too... At the end of the day time will tell... I AM thinking of buying a separate Square Trade warranty we'll see... IMHO for the money it should be a decent buy... YMMV as audio buys are an opinionated and fact based choice combined...

I jumped on this too. It was between this and the RME ADI DAC, but I don't want to tweak EQ settings-I just want plug and play more or less. When I got into this hobby, I would keep buying incremental upgrades that wound up costing me more than if I just went out and paid for top of the line from the get go, so I decided to bite the bullet and take the wallet hit on this so I wasn't constantly wondering "what if?". That being said, I do have the Airist R2R coming my way, so maybe I'm still haven't learned my lesson.

I have been an audiophile for a lot of years and owned a ton of gear. I have learned for ME the expense of the extra 2-5% is not worth it for me anymore. I have too many other expenses. I own a pair Audeze LCD2 Fazered in Rosewood, Senn 600, MassDrop 6xx, and a few others that are now considered 2nd tier. Blows my mind that 1k headphones can be 2nd tier. There are some others I would not mind owning either. But DACs? I have heard a few and it's, for ME, so hard to hear a difference. You just have to make the choice to plunge and be done. My current DAC is a Schiit Bifrost Uber. I have had it for over 5-6 years now. My amp is Cavalli Carbon. It was time for a DAC upgrade. It was this or the Schiit offering and I still wonder if I did the right thing given Schiit's EXCELLENT customer service with a 5 yr warranty. I am sure the sound is different but how much is always the question. No Yggsdrail in my future due the cost. I will just continue to hope I did right. Maybe I just worry too much, we WILL see...

Does anyone have experience plugging Hd6xx directly to the SMSL D1 3-pin xlr without pairing with any amp? If yes, how is the sound quality?

Actually my D1 from Drop received on 3rd of Sep, but the estimated shipment date for THX 789 falls on 15th Nov, so no choice I have to order Loxjie P20 for temporarily uses and should be received by today or the following Monday.

The Schitt Gungnir is $849 and has a 5 year USA Warranty. This is for the non-Multibit edition. I really wonder how this fairs compared to that. It's almost the same money and TBH I have owned a bit of their gear and they do stand behind it. While under warranty, at the factory my Bifrost was upgraded at a reduced price while it was there being worked on. A small thing to many, but it was good customer service and that goes a long way too. I do agree after while the changes are so small it cost way too much to pay for to me, BUT that is just me YMMV when it comes to these things. I will never tell anybody they paid too much for something as long as they are happy. We are all different that way.

ill wager anything that if you put these two devices up to a measuring rig, this will obliterate any schiit product period. First because this DAC was measured to be one of the best when it was released. Second, schiit products (aside from the new $99 Modi 3) consistently perform poorly objectively and relatively speaking.

The audio science forum has a lot of data and charts to show Topping D50s is the best price vs performance DAC. Given the similar technical number, is it wise to buy this one?

oh man...that was too easy. I figured I could trigger you to spray those 'bonafides'. Not impressed. I'll just file that under: "Things IT guys say to seem relevant." Cheers!

DACs should be fairly similar aside from some may be more neutral and others give a colder/brighter sound. Topping always has a fairly neutral sound, xDuoo DACs and older SMSL DACs with AKM chips tend to sound a little more cold/bright than Topping. I'd probably stop with the D70 personally, but I already have the SMSL SU-8 and that's more neutral and has balanced outs for my balanced amp.

Topping D70 was sold for 425 usd. We can see a price tag of below 800 usd for SMSL D1 in the next drop-wave.

I believe this is expensive, considering topping D70 of 425USD.
