Because the price is wrong!
Wow $100 more than it originally sold for on Drop! I am seeing a trend with the recent pricing on this site.

Crap pure crap, the D1 quality and SMSL customer service, or should I say their completely non existent customer service. I bought this D1 from drop after all the hype. I got it MANY months later, which was ok with me. Then, I was in the hostpital from Nov 2019 till now. I plug it in and sounds good, and less than 2 hours into it, it is not recognizable by any OS through USB. It refuses to give descriptor for itself. It shows "locked" when the USB is plugged and "unlock" when unplugged. So, okay lets try Optical... NOPE same thing. I have tried all tricks suggested by people, like 15 different things. None worked and I know a lot of people have the same problem as me. Drop ends support after 30 days and SMSL says 1 year. So, 3 months ago I tried to get to support and RMA. Nope, email is never answered at all. Nope, can't get through to support/customer service by phone AT ALL, and its expensive because I have to call China. On top of that, I have to say awak the whole night to try again with the phone because of time difference. 3 months, nothing. Zero. $850 down to trash. I will NEVER BUY SMSL AGAIN, NO MATTER WHAT THE PRICE... CRAP PURE CRAP! Stay away, it looks nice but if yours become a nice brick to look at, what use you have?

I got this from smsl-topping.com on sale (likely a drop shipper) and ran into an issue where if I push any sample rate over 192kHz (not that I have a need to) it will spontaneously add like 10dB and clip until you change sample rates again. I haven't seen anyone else run into this so I think it's a hardware issue. It happens with the native Windows driver and Thesycon ASIO driver. Quite annoying. I am selling it (shipping too expensive to return) and switching to the Topping D90, since it seems to be a better deal with an even more impressive set of stats, with the D90 being $600-700.

I'm not getting this DAC as I just recently picked up the Topping D70 retail. Tell me if I'm wrong but it would appear that Schiit is getting the Schiit kicked-out of it. Seems like there are a lot of folks leaving their Schiit for Topping and SMSL. The THX AAA 789 seems to be doing a similar job on the amp-side. SMSL too.

And I use the handy slot between the DAC and the power brick to organize all my bills--it's way hipper than my old one!

@Drop You guys really need to work on your EU store. For some of us poor folks in the EU, especially those of us with a currency other than the euro, are being bashed with excessively high import duties because of unfavorable currency conversions. For some of us the import VAT is 25%. Add to that an unfavorable exchange rate and it just becomes way too expensive to import from the US. I would jump on this DAC but with the price plus 25% in dollars plus the exchange rate and it just isn't worth it. I might as well go buy retail, if the item is even available.

The new Topping d90 is only $700 brand new and has better measurements. Smsl needs to drop the MSRP of this to compete. The d90 will likely be on drop for even less in the coming months.

You can certainly go cheaper and not hear the difference. Really a $9 Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Adapter will do as far as DAC quality. Then you're going for features/connectivity, fit and finish, warranty, etc. Paying close to $1000 for a DAC is crazy though, even if you account for everything else.

Definitely can agree. Out of all the all the amps/dacs I've tried in audio I'd say the biggest surprise was my E1DA 9038S. Cost me around $80(plus I changed the usb cord(cost me $15). Made a clarity difference over a chap generic) but is literally is almost as good as my desktop setup. A good 90% of the way there. I could literally live with that alone and be fine with it
