The name of the company behind these sleek pens, Tactile Turn, reveals much of their charm. Designed with a satisfying click mechanism (activated by pressing the bottom of the pen to deploy the tip and the side of the pen to close it), they’re quick on the draw and built to last a lifetime Read More
I've bought from Tactile Turn before and their products are great. Hand machined in Texas by people who care about what they're doing. I love the texture on the pen and the solid, snappy action. The copper pen is now my regular EDC.
I have three side click pens now, copper and bronze full size, and a titanium small size. The copper one was scratchy/crunchy when I got it, but it has smoothed out nicely. The bronze is smooth from the start and the titanium is crunchy in the release button. Hopefully, it will smooth out like my copper one.
All three pens are beautiful in appearance. The clip on my new bronze one seems to be misaligned-crooked. I have not tried to loosen the screws to see if it can be straightened.
Super durable pen and perfect design. Almost flawless execution.
If you like the idea of the AG7 astronaut pen from fisher, this is that but overbuild to the maximum. This pen will outlast you, and your children. The mechanism is simple and reliable; however, it is not as smooth and refined as one might expect (let’s say compared to the fisher), but that’s not the point. If I had to take a pen with me onto mars or an arctic expedition, this would be it. The short size is small enough to fit into any shirt pocket. The clip is perfect. The texture is very functional. I bought this together with the bolt action, but find myself only ever carrying/using the side click.
If I had to come up with a few improvements to the design: the inside of the pen body and the moving parts (slider & button-spring) could be high-polished and pre-greased for much better smoothness. Also, making the Slider and Button-spring out of hardened stainless steel instead of titanium would cause much less friction and make this mechanism wear a lot better. Titanium against titanium wears very poorly. There would be no break-in required. High-polishing metal parts, especially steel, is not very difficult or time consuming with the right machinery, which I’m sure Tactile turn already has. For 100$ I would like to see that.
I really hate to leave a negative review on this one, since my Tactile Turn bolt-action pen is a favorite part of my EDC but I've gotta say this Side Click is a disappointment. First, I ordered the titanium short model and opted for the titanium Damascus clip which cost as much as the pen itself. I did not realize that it would come as a do-it-yourself project with the stock clip already installed on the pen. Not a big deal, and cool cause I would have a spare clip right? Except for the fact that the stock screws were so tight (probably thread-locker too) that removing them without damage was a difficult feat. The original screws are now a bit scratched up and it's a miracle they're not stripped out. At least it came with those cool blued screws for the Damascus clip. Still for $160 I kind of expected it to come with the clip installed.
But the whole selling point on this pen is the awesome side-clicky mechanism right? This is where this pen falls short, at least on my particular pen. The button on mine is scratchy, sticky and makes a loud metal-on-metal screeching sound when pressed to retract the pen. It is not smooth at all, not satisfying and feels super cheap. The machining on the rest of the pen is great, just like my bolt-action, but that doesn't matter much with such an awful mechanism. Hopefully it is just my particular pen and not an overall decline in quality or bad design from Tactile Turn.
I got mine today (Bronze), and the button works fine, and the clip is tight to the body... Sounds like they have a quality control issue, but it doesn't impact all of them at least.
CogsworthTactile Turn is a small company in Texas. I suspect they're not used to doing big orders like this from Drop. I ordered a single pen from them before and it was flawless.
I bought a bolt-action as a holiday gift for a friend. It was fantastic, so I had no reservations about following up with a side-click this year. Unfortunately, QC was not up to par. The click action is noticeably janky. When we removed the clip to install the damascus clip, we found several large metal shavings inside the barrel.
Tactile Turn's customer service was sort of helpful, so I'm giving an extra star for that. But these aren't the sort of issues one should find in a high-end pen. I suggest buying the bolt-action until they sort things out.
I already own a bunch of fancy pens, but nothing in bronze, so I pulled the trigger. While I definitely prefer my copper bolt-action pen better, this one is a close second. -- I'm curious to see what time of patina this might develop over time (if any). My daughter thought it was a pen made of gold! If you're on the fence, buy the bolt. If you don't like bolts or already have one, buy the side click.
Its loud and proud
Good to fidget with.
Probably not the best option to bring for a meeting of sorts. But edc wise its good.
Minor gripe with the clip leaving the top exposed rather high but thats not a deal breaker
Perfectly machined, pleasing materials, and nice heft
The only thing I’d change is the balance—the pen seems rather top-heavy. But perhaps that is a matter of fit rather than a problem with the pen. I should have opted for the medium-length pen.
