Coffee is best brewed between 196 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why Technivorm is pulling out all the stops to ensure it goes as planned with the Moccamaster CDG Coffee Maker. Thanks to an efficient copper boiling element and a pre-immersion drip system, the CDG brews 40 ounces of tasty coffee in just 6 minutes Read More
static.overdubWell, here is where you get into the stainless steel carafe vs. glass carafe debate. Some folks really don't like the stainless steel carafes, and the reviews on the Bonavita criticize the carafe lid. To get the glass carafe you are up to $120 for the Bonavita, which is still much less than the Technivorm but no longer the "cheap" option. The other main difference will be hand made in the Netherlands (Technivorm) vs. made in China (Bonavita), and the 5 year warranty from Technivorm. Global supply chain issues and labor practices are decision variable for some people. If you are curious, here is a tour of the Technivorm factory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8_NXtwr-qg . With all that said, the Bonavita does get good reviews, as does the Wilfa Precision.
static.overdubReplying to myself here. I’ve since gotten fed up with the bonavita carafe. There’s a $50 motif essential brewer that is a rebranded mélitta that has no flaws and is cheaper. That’s now my recommendation.
I have the Technivorm Moccamaster KB741, spec wise, it's identical to this machine, the only difference is the style. I've owned it for 4.5 years and I can say without a doubt it makes the best drip coffee I've ever had. Puts restaurants to shame. It's almost as good as a french press or pour over (just slightly lower in richness), but it's so much easier/faster to make. I use 75-77gm of coffee instead of the recommended 65gm. You should experiment with the amount of coffee grounds (and always grind fresh coffee with this machine to get the most out of if) and find what's right for you. But once you dial in your specific taste, it's perfect and fast. Can't recommend enough.
Does anyone have experience using one of these at high elevation (~5,200 ft)? I'm a bit wary of buying one of these without temperature adjustment to ensure the water comes out hot enough.
Dolorous_EddJust as an FYI for anyone buying this in the future, the water comes out at ~198f to 195f at my elevation. It may be a bit hotter than that, but it's hard to get a good read at the brew head since my Thermapen needs 5 sec to register.
We've had a Technivorm for more than a year after our cheaper maker died. Fast brewing, the availability of replacement parts including electronics if needed, and easy cleaning are major pluses for this unit. The coffee is really good. The coffee pot WILL spill coffee on your counter or floor if you pour too fast. Other than that, this is a great deal and if I didn't already have one I'd jump on it.
This is a very good price on this coffee maker. It is available at Whole Lotte Love for $309. (The CBT Grande - 60 oz version is available for $339). I suspect the reason for this deal is that Tehcnivorm has given this model a bit of a facelift. You can see the new version at http://www.technivorm.com/products/brewers_for_home-use/cd_polished_silver/
I have a different model of this same brand and it is an amazing coffee maker. Others seem disposable but I'm sure I'll have this one for years. My friend recommended it, saying he's had his for over 10 years and its still going strong!
dadbearcrochetsI agree with the review totally. Machine brews excellent coffee. I paid full price at Williams Sonoma at least 10 years ago and haven’t regretted a penny spent.
