Amazing pairing with V280/V281. Crystal clear with a great tonality. Details done the right way, present but not thrown in your face. DAC also has a good depth to soundstage. A lot of technical abilities without becoming cold and artificial sounding. Basically all the things that make Violectric great.
This review will need to be updated as more stuff comes in or as I buy more stuff.
I'm using XLR for headphones and inter cabling. Inter cabling is Fanmusic the really short ones from drop.
Saves me on cables everywhere. The headphone cabling is periapt-pro-headphone-cables. The optical cable is Audioquest Forest. The headphones being used happen to be the 6XX. I have other cans but it’s gonna take me time to get around to all of them. The source just happens to be the one I picked up first which is a Fiio X7markII. I’ll get around to the others on a different dollar.
I’ve been loading the X7 up so I guess it is what I’m listening to the most these days.
Fiio is not bad, user EQ’s cause large differences in the sound. I also bought the THX amp module for the X7 and mostly use the balanced out with acoustic-research-ar-e10-IEM. Cardas IEM’s were pretty good single ended also caused me to be too lazy to install the THX amp module.
Fiio user interface is the worst of all my DAC’s gonna take some time for me to get comfortable.
The Violectric is connected up to THX789 for now... I’ve got a 339 and the THX does not take it down...so far. I used another Audioquest Cable to the single ended input of the THX, the 339 is only se. Using same source and cable too.
The Violectric I cannot say is transparent right now, because the burr-brown is so different... The sampling button does have an effect on the sound. The highs seem to be suppressed, they’re there just different but I still like it a lot. The bass and mids are there full filling and tight. I’ve got a lot more testing to do and life is gonna get in the way and that just takes time away.
No plans to sell the V850 because I do like it, planning on selling THX789 because I’m gonna buy two more amps. The V281 and a electrostatic amp, done deal. The only way the THX789 stays is if it kicks with a piece of equipment I own.
In closing using the optical cable no matter how good will never give me the sound of a coaxial cable which is on order. I need more sources that can coaxial out plenty of optical choices out there. I can connect the main system up to it but would have to use CD’s themselves. Life isn’t gonna let me have the time to rock that direction. I’ll be back...
On the AK tonight because the Fiio is loading, long way to go yet. Still on optical and with the AK I’ll say maybe it gives you the true recording of the source material. Depending on what I was listening to the cymbals were louder. Then switch to a different artist and the signature would change. Take Frampton All I Wanna Be Is By Your Side, studio version was spot on.
Then switch to Pink Floyd MFSL Dark Side Of The Moon, Eclipse at the end of the song when the guy starts talking there is a song playing while he talks. Couldn’t hear that but switch to Hackett live and I can hear one of the musicians cough near the mike but not on it.. This is exactly how my high school buddy set his systems up and everybody loved his sound. Keep in mind this is still without the coaxial cable. In my opinion you are not gonna find anything that might sound better than this DAC at let’s say half price. Also keep in mind my portable stuff is burned in...I think but the 6XX and the THX789 are not if there is such a thing for that stuff. Keep in mind it could be the THX789, can’t run the 339 against it at present because of cabling. I’m going to work that out tho. I have hi-res files that I haven’t gotten to yet, I also have all genres of music on tap.
Bought the wife an AK for her birthday and it had a few hi-res files for her to check out. I ran it thru a PHA2 using a Master and Dynamic headphone 60 series I think...it was nice!
This is a good DAC I’m happy I bought it, it’s one of those purchases I will never regret. If DSD ever becomes that important I’ll just buy another DAC but I don’t plan on replacing my CD collection like that. The reason for that is they could have given us hi-res all along, check your traditional jazz titles and classical.
And on to jazz at this point I’ll call this DAC transparent enough on this night and another dollar. I don’t need to get the coaxial cable to call this now. I’ve been writing this over several nights and each night the V850 reveals more. Just moved to JLP, Far Beyond The Beaten Path...Bass headed down to beneath lowest. It’s all there...
Yeah this is my best purchase off Drop so far.
Got the coaxial cable and it really opens up. Switched to high dollar HiFiMan planar headphones and the separation is unworldly, the clarity, balance, everything as it should be. Let my wife listen, I think she wanted to slap me.
People complain about not having DSD on this unit. I’m a finicky listener and will probably never stream so unless something comes up as must have I’m good not having DSD. In really closing this time bought some Hi-Res files from Steve and a solid black background and everything just got better and I have continued with a balanced setup thru out.
I’ll get around to SE listening one day...
