lokipup9I've searched up several reviews, and I'm finding this to be a great deal for a high quality product. Just want to reassure you :P. What are you planning to pair it with?
OzvanBeyerdynamic Dt 990 pro 250 ohm. sound quality is much better than my old Sony headphones, though voices are a little muffled but software helps with that. Ohh forgot to say thanks for the reassurance on this drop!
lokipup9The DT 990 is an amazing headphone. The trebles are little high though. But this tube amp can tame the treble so well that you will not want remove the headphone! I know this because I have a DT 990/600 and the sound was so better than my Denon AVR. I switched to a Hammond/Mullard tube and listening on my DT 1770 closed-back and it does sound awesome.
gtdaquaI can confirm Mullard tubes sound great. I have a new white label pair of them with 0 burn in, last time I checked the matched set is around 300 dollars now, lol! That's why I'm hesitant to use them, though in maybe the 10 hours I put on them they do sound divine.
UzuzuSo basically if I feel the need to replace the tube for some reason I should probably go Mullard then. Speaking of is there a good site that you would know of for tube shopping in case I need too? ohh right I should also ask if anyone knows if this only uses 12AU7 tubes, I know nothing about this stuff so thought I might ask.
lokipup9not sure what other tubes you can use. My mullards are 6922's which is why they are so expensive. 12au7 mullards I just saw on ebay for under 50 each.
I would honestly recommend amperex tubes with the halo getter, also known as o getter.
Electro Harmonix Gold: Not a bad tube, a little bright here and there but does the job Mazda(cifte): Best imaging, almost holographic with a warm low end. Sylvania: Best low end, dark sounding but good with EDM. Mullard: Best mid range, if you want crisp and lush this is it. RCA: Good all rounder, a satisfying tube indeed. Westinghouse: lot's of clarity but not harsh a pleasant tube. "
Upscale Audio is a good source although the prices are high because I think each tube they sell are verified before they ship out. I also read that Brimar tubes are great on that site.
gtdaquaThanks this info really helps with understanding it better, but i have seen most people recommend Mullard, RCA and Amperex tubes on forums . I'm not adversed to spending what money I have on good quality products after all in most cases you pay for what you get quality wise. Also I have seen that a lot of people where saying that you should go clear top, though i'm not sure what kind of a difference it makes.
Uzuzuwell just some forums I looked up that had people talking about tubes, though they never really specified as to why they like clear tops, i'm just gonna take it as a aesthetic thing. So my product just got in... anyone notice something?Already sent a support ticket to Mass Drop, hopefully this gets fixed.
lokipup9you missing the power cable or something to the box?
Also never heard of clear tops or seen clear top tubes, but the best tubes aren't clear on the top, so.. ymmv
UzuzuRight, missing part of the power cable, though I do have an extra laying around so I'm using that. but ran into another problem with this , got a low hissing noise, kinda like wind blowing through a pinhole in a pipe, currently looking up what could cause it. looks like unplugging the usb connection did it.
Uzuzuyup, all good. just cant use the usb is all. This is a lot more clear compared to the Schiit Magni 2 dac I borrowed from a friend while waiting for this to come in. Main problem with that one was that the audio was uneven, left side was louder than the right, and the sound is a lot more clear with this one, already like it. Thanks for the concern though. so I'll probably save up for a Amperex or RCA, I could buy one now but I want to get used to what this one is like. Anyways thanks for the help and I probably wont be using the usb port on this.
lokipup9Do not give up on the usb. Pl try to get it fixed. What is your sound path? The included tube is still good. Sound imaging and stage are definitely better than laptop's/mobile's dac and amp. But please try to get a tube like Mullard and you may like it even better.
lokipup9Have they gotten back to you about your power cable? I sure hope mine comes in with all the components. This will be my first venture into tube based audio, so I'm hoping things go off without a hitch.
gtdaquaUSB, is working fine now... I had too many cables connected to the back causing the low hum, now to figure out how to get the contents from that miniature disk... why a miniature disk?
